Ben Kinglsey On The Mandarin “Twist” In IRON MAN 3

Obvious spoiler warning! Without delving into details, Sir Ben Kingsley has addressed his initial awareness of a certain “twist” in Marvel’s Iron Man 3, and how it may have affected his performance.

As North America awaits this Friday’s release of Iron Man 3, the acclaimed Marvel film has been rolling out in foreign markets, breaking records along the way, and unloading all the Shane Black-directed action. One of the film’s most controversial aspects has been a twist involving Sir Ben Kingsley’s portrayal of The Mandarin. The Huffington Post pressed the Oscar-winning thespian about the “twist,” asking if he would have been more excited playing the villain straightforward.

“Totally. Because the way that [screenplay writer] Drew [Pearce] and Shane constructed those political broadcasts, they’re very well thought through. The attack on Western iconography, cultural values, historical context of imperialism -- all that weaponry at his command to manipulate and terrify his viewers with these broadcasts with which he interrupts the airwaves were very compelling indeed. I forgot all about the twist until I got to it in the script. I just read it page by page. And I totally would have accepted The Mandarin as The Mandarin, actually.”

Speaking about his awareness of the twist, Sir Ben Kingsley added, “Well, I was told by Kevin. And reading the script, I didn’t know when the reveal would occur. And I was delighted when it did, it’s timed beautifully. So it’s just a great role. And the team are wonderful: They’re very competent, they’re very well disciplined, and they welcome new members to the team so graciously. It was a pleasure to join them and to work with them.” Read the full Q&A here!

Marvel Studios’ “Iron Man 3” pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man? Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, “Iron Man 3” is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce & Shane Black and is based on Marvel’s iconic Super Hero Iron Man, who first appeared on the pages of “Tales of Suspense” (#39) in 1963 and had his solo comic book debut with “The Invincible Iron Man” (#1) in May of 1968. “Iron Man 3” is presented by Marvel Studios in association with Paramount Pictures & DMG Entertainment. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige is producing & Jon Favreau, Louis D’Esposito, Stephen Broussard, Victoria Alonso, Alan Fine, Charles Newirth, Stan Lee & Dan Mintz are executive producers. The film hits May 3, 2013, and is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Marvel Studios will also release “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014; the sequel to “Marvel's The Avengers” on May 1, 2015; and “Ant-Man” on November 6, 2015!

I would've accepted The Mandarin aswell. He seemed pretty threatening up until that point. Still the twist was funny, and clever. I just wish Killian was as threatening and had a more thought out plan. Still it was an awesome movie.

Awesome, he was pretty cool, funny, but saddens me we couldn't of had the comics version, minus the rings of power ofc.

IM 3 was okay, no AVENGERS but we knew nothing gonna touch that going back into their solo movies.

Only bit iffy, really iffy is the DISNEY kid (slash) sidekick Disney thing going on in the movie.

Hope they don't do that shit in STAR WARS 7 :P

Gr8 movie tho!

No, they didn't have destroyed him, they have raped him.

I just get the feeling that the "twist" was inserted into the movie, halfway through this film's production

Suddenly Nolan's Bane doesn't seem so bad.
At least he really WAS Bane and broke Batman.

I loved him, he cracked me up. It was the movie of itself that made me not view it highly.

BTW, I learned something fun about Rotten Tomatoes. Iron Man's 90% rating isn't the fact that critics as a whole view it as a 90% movie. It's because 90% of the critics give it a fresh score. Iron Man 3's actual rating is a 7.6/10.

@maryboo Haha! Good point! Imagine Batman going to fight Bane only to find some cowardly actor instead. Amazingly the Nolanbabies would still love it.

Imagine a mandarin, played by Ken Wantanabe, fighting a helpless iron man with magic. Matching Tonys technological attacks with his own powers, completely bewildering a Tony Stark who has no idea what to do against such a foe.

This is sad.

Batman Begins = 7.7/10
The Dark Knight = 8.5/10
The Dark Knight Rises = 8/10

Iron Man 1 = 7.6/10
Iron Man 2 = 6.5/10

Guess Nolan's "Baleman" is still the king of the CBM trilogies.

@TheHouseofUl Actually the 7.6 is not the top critic score.
The top critic score is Average Rating: 6.1/10 and only 7 top critics reviews are in.

Read the NY Post and Chicago Tribune reviews. Even Iron Man 2 got better reviews from them.

"And guys stop pretending that Mandarin is an "iconic villain" he isn't. He may be Iron Man's number one baddie, but he's no Dr.Doom." -MrMartinMarvel

Oh well, the Joker is Batmans number one baddie, but he is no Bane or some actor who says: "I don't like working here, they are weird." Even though, I liked that line LOL.

@ people complaining that we didn't get to see Ben Kingsley in a fight scene with Iron Man, The man is 69 years old!!! Did you really think a 69 year old would be a fight scene?!

@ 1geekygurl - I can't say I hated Iron Man 3, I was ammused, the dialog was hilarious. But the story, the pacing, the characters were all so weak.

Plus, I kept getting a de ja vu feeling like I was rewatching TDKR. They hit on too many familiar themes for me to ignore them.

@1geekygurl is nice to see this time that the american reviewers are actually giving true reviews, and the rest of the world reviewers don't know what they're saying when they say it's a great movie. Normally american reviews are awful, and european reviews are great. But now it's not the case. Hope too see more true reviews.

I thought it was perfect, basically to me the mandarin wasn't in the film. It was more of a nod to him and use of the name. If anything I felt that the main villain was Fin Fang Foom, just not in name. I really felt Killian was Fin Fang Foom, the dragon tattoo's, the breathing fire!
CavEl
CavEl - 4/30/2013, 11:49 AM
It's still a solid 7.5/10 for the dialog alone, but I still have no interest in watching it again. It was just not my type of movie.

The New York Post is the best review I've seen for the movie yet.
