Joss Whedon Vows THE AVENGERS 2 Isn't 'Nolan-Esque' + Reexplains Marvel Consultant Duty

While Marvel's other Phase 2 sequels appear to be going darker tonally, Marvel's The Avengers director Joss Whedon assures that his 2015 follow-up won't be following them or The Dark Knight trilogy.

During Joss Whedon's umpteenth interview about Much Ado About Nothing, the filmmaker was casually asked about The Avengers 2 and precisely whether it will be following the trite sequel theme of going of darker, like Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. "No, Nolan has this thing and of

it he is the master; I do not have Nolan’s thing," Whedon told Metro.co.uk, describing himself as "Tony Stark desperately trying to be Steve Rogers." He continued, "I can’t stop making jokes. In my vernacular there are two gold standards for sequels: The Godfather Part II and The Empire Strikes Back. They are darker films but they are not suddenly pretentious and losing the mission. The joy of the thing is important: the exaltation, the nobility, the humour and the humanity. But you do need to bleed with these people a little bit or you won’t want to spend another day with them." Wrapping up the interview, Metro.co.uk made an effort to ask about the inevitable Avengers 3 "The idea of doing this three times just staggers the imagination," he said. "I’m not that young. But then, I hadn’t really intended to do a second one. In the third one, I really am going to kill everyone."

In a separate interview with British GQ, Joss Whedon was quizzed about his role as creative consultant of Marvel's Phase 2 slate of movies, which includes Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Guardians of the Galaxy and finally his Avengers follow-up. Reiterating that his consulting deal allows him to read the scripts and look at cuts, Whedon says, "I think that they're doing great stuff, but I like to be able to help and occasionally to go 'you know, that's really going to kill us on the second Avengers.' Since the story has already been approved and everybody knows what we're doing with Avengers 2, we can really lay it out. It's not like anyone's saying 'well I don't know, what if I need that?' It's like 'doing this is troublesome for us, whereas doing this will actually help us.' It's a dance, but I had to do it on the first one too. You want to honor the events of the last movie but you don't want to be beholden to them, because some people will see Avengers who did not see any of the movies inbetween or even Avengers 1."

Below is yet another interview with Joss Whedon, via RTÉ Ten, talking more about The Avengers 2.

So far starring Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Cobie Smulders, Jeremy Renner and Samuel L. Jackson, with Kick-Ass actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson in early talks to join, Marvel's The Avengers untitled sequel is written and directed by Joss Whedon, and is scheduled to shoot in the U.K. in February next year for a May 1, 2015, release date.

I like how Marvel films are light hearted and DC films are more gritty. I like the two to have completely different tones. Like comics, there is room for all kinds of movies, and I love having variety. Imagine how boring it would be if all Marvel and DC films were the same?

OF COURSE it isnt Nolan-esque.

We all already know Marvel's family oriented style, Joss. No need to explain it. Thanks

Love the fct that he doesn't have to be a jerk to get his point across like other people in the industry.

He can respect that every film maker is different and has their own vision.

Good I like Joss Whedon's style for Marvel. Let Nolan be Nolan and not follow in his footsteps.

It's cool if the movie isn't dark. I just hope they don't advertise it as dark like they did with IM3, and then the movie turns out completely different.

What gambgel said. Even if he or any other directort wanted to, Disney and Feige would never allow them to do so. Whedon's not telling us anything that we dont know already.

It's ironic that DC films are known for being dark and gritty, and Marvel more lighthearted, when for the longest time the opposite was considered to be true for their comic book counterparts. (It may still be true -- I haven't picked up a DC comic in decades

Green Lantern isn't part of it. Clearly WB has erased it from memory. Gritty is probably the wrong word to discribe the DCU, but there is distinctly a different tone, which I appreciate.

On another note: I don't understand why some people keep bashing the other side. I think when a river flows and the water level rises, it elevates all of us, if you know what I mean. If MoS can up the ante, then imagine just how badass Avengers 2 is going to be! I personally can't wait!

I prefer the style that best works for the movie itself. If it needs to be dark then so be it, if it wants to be light then so be it. Spider-Man 2 and X2 were slightly darker but they were still overall light hearted, family movies and are overwhelmingly loved. Avengers 2 can be the same.

Tell me more about DC's adult and Oscar worthy movies. Jonah Hex, Green Lantern, Catwoman, Constatine, Losers, Steel...... But you did get Marvel right, family fun and a bit cheesy.
NinjaBaby
NinjaBaby - 6/14/2013, 9:39 AM
@ckal

Watchmen was also gritty. The Val Kilmer, George Clooney, Michael Keaton Batman movies tried but we're still kind of cheesy light hearted (Looking back those movies we're AWFUL) but ya for the most part DC is a darker toned movie when they try to be lighthearted I feel like it defeats the purpose. Upbeat Dark Knight pfffft. Green Lantern should have been Nolan-fied. I wouldve been soooo much better.

But then again I'm a #TeamMarvel guy so maybe my opinion is flawed because of my lack of comic knowledge on that half of the board

Good! The last thing in the world I want is another "dark" and depressing superhero movie. If I want "dark" and depressing, I'll watch the f*cking news. I like my superhero films to be fun, celebrating the fact that their characters come from comic books, where all sorts of impossible things can happen. For the second Avengers film, something in the spirit of the brilliant first film is perfect. We had a great mix of action, drama, and a bit of comedy, along with some solid character development in the first one, and more of that sounds great. I'm confident that Avengers 2 is in fine hands with Whedon.

amen!!.. humour and romance are part of life and should be in movies, even if some bitter lonely manboys who have never been exposed to them, think they are "unnecessary and infantile". when you take away those emotions just to replace them with with forced angst, and cliché melodrama to pose as a "serious movie" all you are left with are dull, uninteresting and boring one-dimensional characters....and a 59% on rotten tomatoes.

Hush, all comicbookmovies are comicbookmovies. They are not meant to be overly serious, too pretentious. Adult oriented? Pffft, cbm is just diversions. You ought to check yourself in the mirror if you think cbm is for adult thing. Ask yourself this question `Have I grown up? if yes then why I am get too serious on a made up myth`That`s why I like Marvel stuff, their offerings never stray the fact theyre just fantasy for few hours long diversion like any movies before

@SageMode, that pretty much describes TDKR to a tee. I liked the movie but there were alot of things about that movie that just made me throw my hands up.

TDK (thanks mainly to Ledger's great performance and Nolans' genius; screw gravely voiced Baleman) really carries that Trilogy.

I'm not sure where the author is going by saying IM3 was darker in tone. It wasn't at all. IM3 was great when it let us get into the brilliant mind of Tony Stark and how he solves problems. Where IM3 was bad was it didn't trust the audience to handle to full Extremis storyline and Mandarin.

So far it looks like Cap with Winter Soldier and Thor with Malekith are giving the audiences the material they want. But you never know if there will be any depth. The MoS trailers are a good example of a fake out.
