2016 looks like an incredibly competitive year for blockbusters. We're set to receive seven comic book movies alone! Okay, maybe six... Still, throw in the likes of The Jungle Book, Rogue One and the Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them and it appears to be an extremely crowded year. So crowded, that we may even see a few high profile misfires.

According to The Wrap, the release date for Justin Lin's Star Trek Beyond has been pushed back two weeks from July 8 to July 22. This will now see it open against both Guy Ritchie's King Arthur and the fifth installment in the incredibly successful Ice Age franchise (appropriately subtitled Collision Course). Even more dauntingly, Paramount's decision to move it has also sandwiched the sci-fi sequel between Sony's Ghostbusters reboot and Matt Damon's next Bourne film.

UPDATE: Deadline have since commented that this change in release date is due to the studio attempting to avoid yet another blockbuster. The David Yates helmed Tarzan has apparently booked up all the IMAX venues in early July. Paramount pushed Beyond a few weeks back to secure an IMAX release in an attempt replicate the success they had with Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation this summer. Suddenly, this seems like a much more well thought-out marketing move...

The Star Trek movies, while popular, haven't been overwhelmingly successful at the domestic box office. Given the franchise's brand recognition, it's difficult to see it flopping - but something has to give in that very high profile block of movies. According to Deadline, Paramount Pictures and Skydance Production have announced that Star Trek Beyond will be voyaging into theaters two weeks later than originally scheduled. It will now open on July 22.

Why the move? More problems? Nope! Actually, there is a window in the IMAX schedule where Star Trek Beyond could have the large format venues basically all to themselves. Make it so!

This is the same strategy that Paramount and Skydance employed when they moved the lastest Mission: Impossible film from December 2015 to July 2015. It ended up being a very lucrative gamble.

ice age will win the weekend, with star trek doing fine. people will blame JJ leaving for the poor reception. in 2 years, no one will remember king arthur.

Well, I don't know if Justin Lin will continue to deliver a good sci-fi action like J.J. did, but I think the franchise need to explore new storylines.

Even with Star Trek's brand recognition and popularity, not one of them films has been a "blockbuster" and that isn't likely to change.

I can see them having a bit of a struggle with Ice Age because...kids...but I can't see it facing much opposition from King Arthur. I LOVE Arthurian legend and those movies made around it, but aside from the 1983 classic Excalibur...not any of them has been very watchable. I don't have high hopes for the King Arthur installment.

They will see NO threat from the Ghostbusters reboot because it will suck out loud, and there's just not enough chicks out there to keep this hot mess of an abortion of a movie afloat. It will tank and tank in an epic way, so there's no threat there at all. The next Bourne flick though...that may cause some competition for box office dollars. Trek better hope that they make all their loot in the opening week. I wouldn't have moved it ahead if it were me, I'd have instead moved it BACK a couple weeks and allow for a few more weeks in the box office before any real competition came out.

Guess we'll see how this all pans out.

I still find it laughable beyond measure that anyone would see the Ghostbusters reboot as any serious contender for box office bucks...

Star Trek Beyond will do similar numbers to its predecessors ($400-450mil) which is damn fine while King Arthur just sounds like a huge bomb.

Only one Ice Age movie has opened higher than $46 mil and that was back in 2006 so I'm quite sure your future predicting is off.

Star Trek should fall somewhere between $60-80 mil depending on how the marketing goes.

Ice Age 5 is going after a very different demo of families with young children so that isn't a huge threat to
Star Trek.

Between getting access to IMAX screens and going up against Guy Richie's King Arthur project that
nobody is demanding,Paramount is well positioned for a good late summer run with only Suicide Squad
to contend with across the dog days of August.

I don't see King Arthur or Ice Age being a problem, as long as Star Trek is a good movie that doesn't tell a new version of an old story. King Arthur probably won't be that good and Ice Age is for a different, younger, audience. Looking forward to the new Trek movie.
