Fillion IS NOT Ant-Man; Pennington's S.H.I.E.L.D. Role Down to Three Candidates

A report last week about Nathan Fillion's possible casting as one of the founding Avengers may be too good to be true; plus, Kevin Pennington's S.H.I.E.L.D. role has been narrowed down even further.

The inclusion of Marvel scientist and superhero Dr. Henry 'Hank' Pym, also known as Ant-Man/Giant Man/Yellow Jacket, in the forthcoming Avengers movie appears to me a non-negotiable requirement to most fans. In Marvel comics canon, Pym was one of the founding members of the superhero team and has recently appeared alongside his teammates in two animated films.

Several days ago a rumor began that Nathan Fillion, of Serenity fame, "is pretty much locked to be Henry Pym, and should be announced before any other new additions to the cast (think around Comic Con)." This information caused quite a stir on fanboy forums; since many fans have been pulling for Fillion to land a coveted, mainstream superhero role for years. The tentative contracting of Fillion's old Firefly TV series director Joss Whedon as the man who will helm the highly anticipated Avengers movie made the fillion/Pym rumor a bit more plausible. But have fans jumped the gun?

According to AvengersNews, they have. After speaking to their source at Marvel Studios, the movie site is reporting that the role of "Henry Pym is not close to being cast yet.. [and] Nathan Fillion has not met with anybody at Marvel Studios regarding the film or any roles in the Marvel Universe."

If this later bit of information is true, how did the original rumor come about?

It could very likely have been taken completely out of context to begin with. Fillion was attending the premiere of Iron Man 2 last week and was asked by MTV News if he would like to work with Whedon in the Avengers movie. The actor joked about possibly playing the role of Pym, which provoked his fans to cause an internet buzz for days.

AvengersNews has also issued out an update to their earlier report about actor Kevin Pennington's role as a re-imagined S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in future Marvel films. The list of characters has been narrowed down to three possible candidates:

- Agent Rick Jones

- Noh-Varr
(Kree alien known as Captain Marvel/Marvel Boy)

- Agent Clint Barton (but not in his Hawkeye persona yet)

They've also quoted their source as saying that Pennington's character "would be working with [director Nick] Fury and would likely have a future in the upcoming S.H.I.E.L.D. film."

Awesome. I really hope this guy isn't Hawkeye. If he would be teamed up with Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow, I want a known. But that just traces back to me wanting the Black Widow role to go to an unknown, but it's a tad bit too late for that.

But if hes Rick Jones, I would really like to know what role he'll have in the film, besides just a member of SHIELD.

I agree with the Kree-casting. I also think that he could be a good Clint Barton.

Nice find, Multi

I just wish that Marvel had decided to make an Ant-Man/Giant-Man/Yellowjacket movie before putting Hank Pym in the Avengers. Seems unfair since Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Cap have got their films locked and loaded until Avengers hits.

But who cares! An Avengers movie is actually getting made in my lifetime, and I couldn't be happier. I'm sure they know what they're doing at Marvel, and won't let us down.

As for this Pennington guy's role, it is quite a mystery. Hopefully it's not Rick Jones or Hawkeye.

Agent Barton would seem a likely route. They've gone the ultimate route with Fury, and in the Ultimates Barton was a black ops type member of the Avengers before joining full time, so something along those lines wouldn't be unprecedented in the movies.
I've never seen the guy act so I don't if he's any good, but I'm betting Hawkeye gets introduced in the Ultimate Universe fashion.

I'm Rick Jones, Bitch!

Noh Varr would actually be pretty cool to see and I agree that Marvel would be smart to get Captain Marvel on the screen first. Great work, as usual!

I think any of them is up for game... waiting for an announcement. Who do you think fans will like the most? They would have to change Rick Jones and Noh-Varrs history to fit as a S.H.I.E.L.D. member... I don't think people would mind for either one though.

I hear a few individuals want Nathan Fillion as Ant-Man. Sucks that it's not true. But the fans here want Patrick Wilson, whom I don't mind in the the least.

I think Kevin Pennington would fit better as Noh-Varr. He seems too fresh-faced to play a S.H.I.E.L.D. member.

As much as I'd want him for the role, I didn't think they'd cast Fillion when we don't even have a confirmed director for the avengers just yet, unless Wright picked him out himself.

Uhh not to be a Debbie Downer or a Negative Nancy but couldn't the Pennington role just be a regular Shield agent like Coulson? (I forget how to spell his name)

Hey Igirl just wondering with you being like the resident Supernatural fangirl, what did you think of the season finale?

So an inside source says he is locked in and an inside source says nothing has been decided yet. Can I choose to believe the former and hope he still gets the part? :P

I guess the good news is that we still don't know and it doesn't mean that he can't get the part still. With Whedon directing, he certainly has an inside connection.

Seems too fresh faced to play much of anything! But of the three options, Noh-Varr is best. Michael Weatherly for Hawkeye, and Nathen Fillion as the Sentry (an older incarcerated version perhaps?)
ReillyParker
ReillyParker - 5/16/2010, 11:14 PM
@Igirl: Awesome can't wait to read it. Did the end confuse you at all cause I don't know what to make of it... I'm talking about the bit with Sam and Chuck. Um I guess *Spoiler Alert*? I'd like to think Sam came back and that Chuck is God, but the Chuck being God doesn't make sense since Dean's amulet never burned while he was around Chuck so yeah... what the hell? If Sam is back then I'm sad to say this but I think we all know what's gonna happen to Dean's family :\ Gotta start season 6 somehow... They really should of ended the series right here, at least leave the boys with their happy ending.
McLovin
McLovin - 5/16/2010, 11:19 PM
Isn't he too old for Rick Jones? Isn't he too old for Noh-Varr? I could maybe see him as Bart, but he isn't even in my top 3 choices...

ecksmanfan - Rick Jones bitch!!! LMFAO!!!!!!!!! Classic! Whedon should work that into the dialog!

InstigatorGIRL
InstigatorGIRL - 5/16/2010, 11:20 PM
@Reilly. Okay the explaination for the amulet is the angel Joshua told them that the amulet wouldn't work because God didn't want them to find him. Also yeah I figured Chuck was God and I dunno what to make of Sam being back.

Now... this shameful self-promoting is brought to you by InstigatorGIRL: Read my Rant & Review of Dr. Horrible in the "Reviews" Tab. LMAO. =P

SydneySavage - 5/16/2010, 11:22 PM
McLovin.. he's 23? He's the perfect age imo for Noh-Varr or Rick Jones. Maybe a bit too young for Hawkeye? How old is ultimate Hawkeye?

@Igirl: I'll read your article if you read mine :P LoL Also I have a theory about the whole apocalypse, and it pretty just expounds what Luci had said before. I think the whole apocalypse was a test from god but not just between the obvious Lucifer and Michael or the slightly less obvious Sam and Dean. I think the test was for everyone which kinda makes sense cause I mean it's the apocalypse, epicly massive scale event so massive scale test. Tested humans, angels, and even demons. Angels obviously failed 'cept for Cas, who even powerless has to be the biggest badass of the show. "Did you just Molotov my brother with holy oil?" "Uhh.. no..." LoL ok that was just my rant for the finale. As you can tell I effing loved it.

As for the article I was talking about:

It's a bit long but believe me it's a good read :D

InstigatorGIRL - 5/16/2010, 11:32 PM
@Reilly Okay I am going to go read it right now. ^_^ Yeah that's what I was thinking also that it was a test but maybe also a lesson for Michael and Lucifer to see why God valued humans so much and what forgiveness and love was all about
ReillyParker
ReillyParker - 5/16/2010, 11:43 PM
@Igirl: Yeah I figured that part to. The whole human-race-surviving-the-apocalypse thing was pretty much a b*tchslap in the face to the angels, namely to Mike and Luci

48and2 - 5/17/2010, 12:26 AM
@Reilly haha you're sure a smooth talker =P

Fillion would add a whole other dimension to the film, were he given a role with any meat whatsoever. Pym would work brilliantly. But it sounded a little too good to be true anyway.

I don't care who he ends up as if we're fortunate enough to even get him in the movie.

Then with Whedon directing we get a whole new take on Pym: "I joinin' dem dair Avengers team, yes sir I am. We got us a dem dair cosmic sitwashun on ur hands". lol jk...

@Poni - your article here is beautiful and masterfully presented, good scoop too. Doing some heavy scrutinizing and taking notes. =D

Pennington I don't so much care about, but would prefer seeing some Kree show up, and I'm opposed to having a B- lister as pre Hawkeye.
