Wong-Chu made his first appearance in Tales of Suspense #39, Iron Man’s origin story. He was created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Don Heck in 1963.

Wong-Chu was the ruthless commander of the Red Guerrillas during the Vietnam War. He entertains himself by capturing villages, and then issuing a wrestling challenge: anyone who defeats him in a match will have their entire village freed. However, because of his perfected skills in martial arts, no opponent has ever been able to defeat him.

After Tony Stark falls into one of his booby-traps, Wong-Chu takes him captive. Upon learning that shrapnel had been lodged near Mr. Stark’s heart, he decides that he will trick him into building a weapon for them in his last days alive. However, Tony sees through his trap and rather, with the help of physicist Ho Yinsen, creates a protective suit of armor, Iron Man.

In the climax of the story, Wong-Chu orders that Tony Stark should be killed. However, due to his newly built disguise, no one is able to find him. After capturing yet another village, Wong-Chu issues his wrestling challenge once again. A mysterious man dressed heavily in a trench coat and hat approaches Wong-Chu and accepts his challenge. The townspeople shocked when the man drops his disguise and is revealed to be Tony Stark, now dressed in his Iron Man suit. Stark easily defeats Wong-Chu, who makes an unsuccessful attempt to escape. After a few more encounters with Ol’ shell-head, Wong-Chu is killed in an ammo dump explosion caused by Iron Man.

Wong-Chu appears in the 2007 direct-to-DVD film The Invincible Iron Man. He is voiced by James Sie.

A character named Raza appears in the 2008 film “Iron Man”, directed by Jon Favreau. He is essentially a less physically oriented, Afghanistan version of Won-Chu. He is played by Faran Tahir. Raza is a member of the Ten Rings terrorist group responsible for the capture of Tony Stark. He was hired by Obadiah Stane, and is later killed by him.
