Many people might find this news very surprising! While attending a Q&A at Paleyfest NY, Variety reports that the Avengers: Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon revealed that he made more money from Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, an independent musical series made back in 2008, than he did from Marvel’s 2012 blockbuster, The Avengers. Even though that’s hard to believe, especially considering the fact that The Avengers racked up over 1 billion dollars worldwide, Joss Whedon claims this to be true.

As Forbes.com points out, Whedon has spoken on the matter before, and revealed that he’s not very happy with Marvel and how they manage their money. “Marvel can be very cheap, God knows. They can also be sensible and frugal.” Whedon did not go on to reveal exactly how much he accumulated from both movies.
What do you think about this news? Do you believe that Whedon would return to do another movie for Marvel after Avengers: Age of Ultron's reported failure in the eyes of Disney? Share your thoughts in the usual place.

1. If he felt he was underpaid why did he sign the contract?

2. Why would Marvel overpay for a guy that had directed 1 movie in his career that was a financial failure?

Folks need to remember that, before Disney bought everything Marvel, Marvel Studio was an independent film production company. Compared to, say, DC's relationship with WB, Marvel Studios was an unaffiliated minor league baseball team to DC/WB's NY Yankees. The fact that Iron Man turned out so well was a miracle. Plus, most of that financial success was thanks to Paramount's marketing, so they got a big, big slice if the profits.

Whedon was hired before the Disney deal was finalized, and I imagine was paid similarly to the other MCU directors. (Probably on par with what Favreau and Leterrier got for IM and TIH, less than Branagh got for Thor and Favs got for IM2, if I had to guess.) Joss is a geek god, but he had very little directing clout before Avengers. He'd only ever directed one feature film that didn't make much of a splash, and some of his own TV stuff. As much as Marvel Studios gets criticized for following a formula or not taking chances creatively, they've made some HUGE gambles financially, and hiring Joss to direct the centerpiece of their franchise might've been the biggest. At the same time, it was also a canny finacial decision, because the money they saved by not hiring a bigger paycheck director went towards the film itself. Damn, that Feige's a smart guy.

Doctor Horrible, on the other hand, Joss self-produced and sold online, so yeah, any profits went directly into his pocket without sharing them with a movie studio or distributor. So people are taking it out of context. I don't think Whedon is bitching, he's just sharing one of the idiosyncrasies of the entertainment industry: a tiny-budgeted independent project can make a much bigger profit than a huge blockbuster. It's the only reason small, independent projects manage to still exist at all.

He has definitely said that he was interested in working with DC too, I still don't think we saw his full Vision for AOU, I would have loved to see what he would have done with a younger Hank Pym and Janet
