Smallville: Clark Will Get Closer to the Traditional Superman Costume

Smallville: Clark Will Get Closer to the Traditional Superman Costume

According to TV Guide.com, while Clark Kent will not be donning the traditional red and blue uniform that symbolizes Superman, he WILL take a step closer to it.

Here's the Q&A on the subject presented at TVGuide.com:

Q Is Clark Kent finally going to become Superman this season? —Lauren, Palm Beach, Fla.

A Sounds like we’re close! Smallville exec producer Brian Peterson tells me that the black blur suit Clark has been wearing this season was designed to be only a temporary bridge to the long-overdue Superman unveiling they are now plotting. “Given the Clark Kent everyone knows from our show, it would come out of nowhere to have him automatically start wearing the [Superman] suit,” Peterson says.

But once Clark comes to embrace his human side this season (with a little guidance from costumed Justice Society guest heroes Hawkman, Dr. Fate and Stargirl in a January episode), Peterson says Clark can start wearing his classic red-and-blue. The season may even conclude with Clark building a new costume with a bit more color, much as Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker did in the first “Spider-Man.”

IF they bring Darkseid on the show, hopefully it will work out more effectively than the battle with Doomsday did. The fight between them has to absolutely rock or there's no point in bringing him on.

yeah that Doomsday fight sucked butt cheeks. I'm hopeing it was just a set up to have it like the Death of Superman, where each week you'll start to see him punching his way out from underground.

So basically what they are saying is that we still have to watch the Matrix before we see Superman OK got it. Just wanted that clear so I'm not missing anything. Sometimes this show is like getting jerked off and never well you know...

If I remember right Superboy was wearing
the Super-suit in Smallville in all those
Superboy comics I read as a kid! And Lana
Lang had bright light-red hair and Superboy
was in the Legion of Superheroes in the
future every once in awhile! Of course I
may be wrong...

Actually makes me excited for this show. I think the writers and producers have really picked it up this season. They knew the move to Fridays at 8pm was a death sentence which has turned out the crew of this show has worked harder than before to make this show worth the watch. I'm happy because they starting to get more into the actual storylines of the comic a bit and this season has been consistantly pretty good. Even the filler "zombie" episode was entertaining whereas in the past I would get pissed when I realized an episode was a filler. I also like they are starting to introduce more heroes and villians.
Point being Smallville is returning to the roots of the show and putting out consistant above average stories which made the show a success in the first place. People want to knock it but I still love the show. I make sure I get home early from the gym on Fridays and don't plan anything until after 9 so I can watch it. Call me a dork but that's the way I roll.

that was a different universe DD. This is the smalleville universe, they don't stick much to the comics storylines at all according to things I've read. I also want to tell you that I read Superboy in the 70's, great comic reading. I recommend it to anyone.

What I mean with them starting to get into storylines is the stuff with the Green Arrow about ready to take a huge fall. You can see it coming because he's becoming a drunk who's blowing all his money on booze and gambling. I enjoy the Green Arrow as a character in anything because deep down he's just as [frick]ed up as anybody else in the real world.

How about I dont care if he wears the suit. The way Smallville is set-up I think it'll probally just look silly on him now. I mean who's not going to know it's Clark Kent... put him in the black uniform without the treachcoat let him wear a visor or something to partially cover his eyes. As far as Im concerned he's not Superman anyway. I'd think after yrs of no flying or the traditional uniform that's what the network guys was getting at ....well Im sold. He's just a guy based off of the DC character known as Superman just keep calling him the BLUR and do a spin-called the Blur from Smallville...I'll watch it.

Excellent article Ed! I am excited to see what the new costume will look like. This whole thing is working out so well for Tom Welling to transition to the big screen. In the past I would have said that while I wish he would take the part, he would never do it because he wouldn't even wear the costume. But with the way things are shaping up, with Tom getting closer to putting the suit on (he will). Now I am thinking that this is all lining up perfect. Next season Tom transitions to being Superman and after that it really doesn't make since to avoid a movie. And with the situation at Warner Brothers being that a new movie must go into production right about the time that Smallville season 10 would wrap; I think that the timing couldn’t be better. I just hope that Tom finally accepts his rightful place on the big screen as Superman.
Oh and for all the Tom Welling haters out there. Don’t even bother commenting. I know that there are some that don’t like Tom Welling or Smallville. I do, and this is just my opinion so DON’T GET YOUR PANTIES IN A BUNCH!

tenaciousbt: I dont actually dislike Tom Welling all that much - I blame the writers and directors for not giving him good enough stories and scenes to show that he is in fact a decent actor!

I actually think Welling, when given the proper materia, is great and in his heroic moments he absolutely demonstrates that he could play Superman. Hopefully we'll see that some day.

EdGross: I agree - the end of the latest episode where he caught that bullet is the perfect example of what a decent Superman Welling could make (if you forget the Smallville complications) - for me, that scene was better than the one in Returns where the bullet hits Rouths eye!

That was a sweet catch!!! Even my wife said "WOW" and she's not a fan. Sometimes I think there might still be a reason to watch this show...

Side note: Kara was on Earth for 30 seconds and she could fly... 25 years clark can't fly... and what's up with the Kandorian army being human-like? (I have my other problems with them, but that's my focus)

Welling has been okay (and that's being nice) at times over the 9 seasons, but he should never get to be in a Supes movie IMO. The thought hurts my brain.

I agree. Welling does okay in Smallville but I would never want him anywhere near the movies. Theres a reason they haven't put him in the movies guys.
@Batfan. I know I agree on the Kara flying and not him. Stupid bull squat.
Oh and yes that scene with the bullets from last episode was pretty bad ass I liked it, but then I thought about it and my thoughts now are, "What a total rip off of 'Returns'."

So, how does Clark become Superman without everyone knowing who he really is?

INT. FORTRESS - DAY
JOR-EL: Your training is complete, my son. You are ready to embrace your destiny.

CLARK: But how, father? You've said there is a need for me to maintain two identities, but everyone will recognize me for who I am.

JOR-EL: I have forseen this, Kal-El. And now that you are truly aware of who you are, I bestow upon you a final gift...

A pair of black glasses mysteriously appear in the air and move towards Clark. He reaches up and grabs them gently.

CLARK: I don't understand.

JOR-EL: Because I have seemingly unlimited abilities, I have made the world forget what Clark Kent looks like. Wear those glasses, my son, and no one will be able to tell who you are without them. As far as the world is concerned, Clark Kent has always worn glasses.

CLARK: Sounds kind of lame.

JOR-EL: Your point is.....?

Hell, if that doesn't work, Clark could always readjust his Legion flight ring and make everyone forget.

@ED GROSS-

"I actually think Welling, when given the proper materia, is great and in his heroic moments he absolutely demonstrates that he could play Superman. Hopefully we'll see that some day."

Well said!!!!

As for your suggestion above, I think something along those lines could work.......i mean......it IS Smallville!!!

Someone else threw out the suggestion of having ZATANNA put a charm on his glasses, which i think is a great idea too! There are so many ways they could fix the issue that i think too many people make too big a deal of it.

TENACIOUSBT-

I wish I could actually believe there was a possibility of seeing WELLING on the big screen as SUPES, but unfortunately no one had the FORSIGHT to plan for it. This show should have run for 5-6 seasons tops, then jumped onto the big screen. Unfortunately, WELLING would be dragging all the baggage of a show MOST people have already dismissed. I too, think he could pull it off splendidly, but unfortunately there aren't enough people who feel the same way.

INSTAGATORGIRL-

No way! That one scene was better than all the action scenes in SUPERMAN RETURNS combined!!!!
InTylerWeTrust
InTylerWeTrust - 11/3/2009, 10:37 AM
InstigatorGIRL: I totally agree about the bullet catch scene. As soon as I saw the gun shoot in slow motion, I knew it would be a rip off of Returns. And it was exactly that.
EdGross
EdGross - 11/3/2009, 10:46 AM
To InstigatorGIRL and Taloutd, you're right, it probably will go that way.

One thing in Welling's favor is that Smallville is a show that simply won't die. What I mean is that they move it to Fridays, considered the deathslot, and it's continuing to rise in the ratings. It also supposedly remains a massive success overseas, and that overseas market could be strong enough for them to actual consider casting him. Obviously this is all fanboy thoughts, but you end Smallville with him becoming Superman, you can actually start a feature film that would work for people who haven't been watching the show.

Think about it. First off, you wouldn't need an origin story. Everyone agrees an origin story at this point -- unless it's told in some sort of quick flashback -- is pointless. But if a movie picked up where the series left off, Clark is Superman, he works at the Daily Planet, the triangle between Clark, Lois and Superman that audiences would expect would already be there, one assumes that there would also be a Perry White and new Jimmy Olsen in place. You really could hit the ground running without too much explanation of where this version of Superman came from. All of the pieces would be in place.

That make sense?
