Smallville: Clark Will Get Closer to the Traditional Superman Costume

According to TV Guide.com, while Clark Kent will not be donning the traditional red and blue uniform that symbolizes Superman, he WILL take a step closer to it.
Here's the Q&A on the subject presented at TVGuide.com:

Q Is Clark Kent finally going to become Superman this season? —Lauren, Palm Beach, Fla.

A Sounds like we’re close! Smallville exec producer Brian Peterson tells me that the black blur suit Clark has been wearing this season was designed to be only a temporary bridge to the long-overdue Superman unveiling they are now plotting. “Given the Clark Kent everyone knows from our show, it would come out of nowhere to have him automatically start wearing the [Superman] suit,” Peterson says.

But once Clark comes to embrace his human side this season (with a little guidance from costumed Justice Society guest heroes Hawkman, Dr. Fate and Stargirl in a January episode), Peterson says Clark can start wearing his classic red-and-blue. The season may even conclude with Clark building a new costume with a bit more color, much as Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker did in the first “Spider-Man.”

hopefully....after this season, next season should prob the last...with clark dating lois and using the red-blue costume...cuz i dont wanna have this series dragged out...plus having JLA, JSA, LEGION, i hope we get darkseid, doomsday 2.0, new krypton etc...i think we have enuff drama and villains for 1 more season...
big up season 9...and the anti life equation clark referenced made me giddy as hell!!!
Anil Rickly - 11/3/2009, 5:02 AM
IF they bring Darkseid on the show, hopefully it will work out more effectively than the battle with Doomsday did. The fight between them has to absolutely rock or there's no point in bringing him on.
EdGross - 11/3/2009, 5:13 AM
No Darkseid :)
teabag - 11/3/2009, 5:24 AM
yeah that Doomsday fight sucked butt cheeks. I'm hopeing it was just a set up to have it like the Death of Superman, where each week you'll start to see him punching his way out from underground.
Kablamo - 11/3/2009, 5:25 AM
BALLS!!!!
TheGlove - 11/3/2009, 5:30 AM
Yay for the suit. And yay for Smallville.
6of13 - 11/3/2009, 5:33 AM
"But once Clark comes to embrace his human side this season ....Peterson says Clark can start wearing his classic red-and-blue".........or in other words...

Please let us have a 10th season , he might become superman in that one.......but no promises lol :P
teabag - 11/3/2009, 5:42 AM
This show is great.
SuperPoweredMikeL - 11/3/2009, 5:57 AM
So basically what they are saying is that we still have to watch the Matrix before we see Superman OK got it. Just wanted that clear so I'm not missing anything. Sometimes this show is like getting jerked off and never well you know...
ASSASSIN666 - 11/3/2009, 6:03 AM
can someone please tell me what is it with the trench coats. Am I missing something?

bodykount80 - 11/3/2009, 6:16 AM
At this point I'd rather he just learn to fly! 9 years and he still hasnt taken flight - its crazy! :(
joshw24 - 11/3/2009, 6:18 AM
he should wear it at the end of this season and make zod or a scientist find doomsday under ground
flames809 - 11/3/2009, 6:22 AM
@josh I with you on that one!
Spilox - 11/3/2009, 6:37 AM
If I remember right Superboy was wearing
the Super-suit in Smallville in all those
Superboy comics I read as a kid! And Lana
Lang had bright light-red hair and Superboy
was in the Legion of Superheroes in the
future every once in awhile! Of course I
may be wrong...
DDD - 11/3/2009, 6:50 AM
DDD@ yep your right :)
teabag - 11/3/2009, 6:57 AM
Actually makes me excited for this show. I think the writers and producers have really picked it up this season. They knew the move to Fridays at 8pm was a death sentence which has turned out the crew of this show has worked harder than before to make this show worth the watch. I'm happy because they starting to get more into the actual storylines of the comic a bit and this season has been consistantly pretty good. Even the filler "zombie" episode was entertaining whereas in the past I would get pissed when I realized an episode was a filler. I also like they are starting to introduce more heroes and villians.
Point being Smallville is returning to the roots of the show and putting out consistant above average stories which made the show a success in the first place. People want to knock it but I still love the show. I make sure I get home early from the gym on Fridays and don't plan anything until after 9 so I can watch it. Call me a dork but that's the way I roll.
FlashThompson - 11/3/2009, 6:59 AM
that was a different universe DD. This is the smalleville universe, they don't stick much to the comics storylines at all according to things I've read. I also want to tell you that I read Superboy in the 70's, great comic reading. I recommend it to anyone.
Scorpioxfactor - 11/3/2009, 7:00 AM
Well he sure as hell can't get any further away.
BmanHall - 11/3/2009, 7:08 AM
What I mean with them starting to get into storylines is the stuff with the Green Arrow about ready to take a huge fall. You can see it coming because he's becoming a drunk who's blowing all his money on booze and gambling. I enjoy the Green Arrow as a character in anything because deep down he's just as [frick]ed up as anybody else in the real world.
FlashThompson - 11/3/2009, 7:14 AM
I think Smallville reminds me of some of the Superboy storylines...like this one...

Oh and i think ive found the next suite...

:P
teabag - 11/3/2009, 7:19 AM
How about I dont care if he wears the suit. The way Smallville is set-up I think it'll probally just look silly on him now. I mean who's not going to know it's Clark Kent... put him in the black uniform without the treachcoat let him wear a visor or something to partially cover his eyes. As far as Im concerned he's not Superman anyway. I'd think after yrs of no flying or the traditional uniform that's what the network guys was getting at ....well Im sold. He's just a guy based off of the DC character known as Superman just keep calling him the BLUR and do a spin-called the Blur from Smallville...I'll watch it.
BLADE4040 - 11/3/2009, 7:25 AM
Ummm hellooooooooo.......am i the only one out picking up my copy of hardwired? It's got frigen Cuba goofing jr and Val Kilmer!!!!!!!!
superdog - 11/3/2009, 7:42 AM
You said Goofing JR, bwahahahahahaha. Nice!
SirPrize - 11/3/2009, 7:50 AM
On purpose or mistake? You decide :)
superdog - 11/3/2009, 7:57 AM
What goofing or the movie :P
teabag - 11/3/2009, 7:59 AM
You purposely mistaken. There I still win. Nanny nanny boo boo.
SirPrize - 11/3/2009, 8:06 AM
Tea@ the movie is clearly a mistake. My goofing is the question :)

sirprize@ stick your head in my doggie doo doo
superdog - 11/3/2009, 8:13 AM
That's grodie.
SirPrize - 11/3/2009, 8:22 AM
Nothing from ACTION UNLEASHED is a mistake lol :)
teabag - 11/3/2009, 8:22 AM
Oh that pic Teabag dear god no! If I have to see Tom Welling in that outfit I will die from horror lol
dancingmonkey08 - 11/3/2009, 8:24 AM
I think the suit will be more like Green Arrow and the rest of the Justice League. It will have the leather look and a hood. Although that might change with the JSA showing up and having a different look than the league
Stubbyswof - 11/3/2009, 8:34 AM
Excellent article Ed! I am excited to see what the new costume will look like. This whole thing is working out so well for Tom Welling to transition to the big screen. In the past I would have said that while I wish he would take the part, he would never do it because he wouldn't even wear the costume. But with the way things are shaping up, with Tom getting closer to putting the suit on (he will). Now I am thinking that this is all lining up perfect. Next season Tom transitions to being Superman and after that it really doesn't make since to avoid a movie. And with the situation at Warner Brothers being that a new movie must go into production right about the time that Smallville season 10 would wrap; I think that the timing couldn’t be better. I just hope that Tom finally accepts his rightful place on the big screen as Superman.
Oh and for all the Tom Welling haters out there. Don’t even bother commenting. I know that there are some that don’t like Tom Welling or Smallville. I do, and this is just my opinion so DON’T GET YOUR PANTIES IN A BUNCH!

tenaciousbt - 11/3/2009, 8:36 AM
tenaciousbt: I dont actually dislike Tom Welling all that much - I blame the writers and directors for not giving him good enough stories and scenes to show that he is in fact a decent actor!
joshw24 - 11/3/2009, 8:44 AM
I actually think Welling, when given the proper materia, is great and in his heroic moments he absolutely demonstrates that he could play Superman. Hopefully we'll see that some day.
EdGross - 11/3/2009, 8:54 AM
I SAY THIS IS PROMISING, NEVER EVEN THOUGHT HE'D WEAR THE SUIT...BUT DUDE, HOW THE HELL ARE YOU GONNA EXPLAIN HOW THEY WILL DIFFERENTIATE CLARK FROM SUPERMAN WHEN EVERYONE CAN TELL WHO HE IS????
GUNSMITH - 11/3/2009, 8:55 AM
Smallville has done too much damage to the superman mythos to translate into a movie...especialy with WB's plan to make there own movie-verse.

Face facts people Welling will never be Superman on the big screen :)

dancingmonkey@ yeah you maybe right...how about this one..

lol
teabag - 11/3/2009, 9:10 AM
EdGross: I agree - the end of the latest episode where he caught that bullet is the perfect example of what a decent Superman Welling could make (if you forget the Smallville complications) - for me, that scene was better than the one in Returns where the bullet hits Rouths eye!
joshw24 - 11/3/2009, 9:22 AM
nothing but good things from here on out and that bullet catching scene was awesome! come on season 10!
peterparker420 - 11/3/2009, 9:28 AM
That was a sweet catch!!! Even my wife said "WOW" and she's not a fan. Sometimes I think there might still be a reason to watch this show...

Side note: Kara was on Earth for 30 seconds and she could fly... 25 years clark can't fly... and what's up with the Kandorian army being human-like? (I have my other problems with them, but that's my focus)
batfan39 - 11/3/2009, 9:31 AM
this show just gets worse.
InFamouslyCool - 11/3/2009, 9:36 AM
Welling has been okay (and that's being nice) at times over the 9 seasons, but he should never get to be in a Supes movie IMO. The thought hurts my brain.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 11/3/2009, 9:56 AM
I agree. Welling does okay in Smallville but I would never want him anywhere near the movies. Theres a reason they haven't put him in the movies guys.
@Batfan. I know I agree on the Kara flying and not him. Stupid bull squat.
Oh and yes that scene with the bullets from last episode was pretty bad ass I liked it, but then I thought about it and my thoughts now are, "What a total rip off of 'Returns'."
InstigatorGIRL - 11/3/2009, 10:05 AM
So, how does Clark become Superman without everyone knowing who he really is?

INT. FORTRESS - DAY
JOR-EL: Your training is complete, my son. You are ready to embrace your destiny.

CLARK: But how, father? You've said there is a need for me to maintain two identities, but everyone will recognize me for who I am.

JOR-EL: I have forseen this, Kal-El. And now that you are truly aware of who you are, I bestow upon you a final gift...

A pair of black glasses mysteriously appear in the air and move towards Clark. He reaches up and grabs them gently.

CLARK: I don't understand.

JOR-EL: Because I have seemingly unlimited abilities, I have made the world forget what Clark Kent looks like. Wear those glasses, my son, and no one will be able to tell who you are without them. As far as the world is concerned, Clark Kent has always worn glasses.

CLARK: Sounds kind of lame.

JOR-EL: Your point is.....?

Hell, if that doesn't work, Clark could always readjust his Legion flight ring and make everyone forget.
EdGross - 11/3/2009, 10:11 AM
The thing I don't like about Wellings acting is when he is "the blur" he lowers his vocal tone to sound more manly I guess, too much. No I am not talking about him talking on the phone with Lois with the voice distortion thing. I don't know if you guys get me, but anyway. Sure he should not sound like Clark, but something about his voice acting as the blur is just... well exaggerated I think
I - 11/3/2009, 10:17 AM
The sad thing EdGross... Is I honestly think that is how it will go down...-_- FAIL.
InstigatorGIRL - 11/3/2009, 10:18 AM
@ED GROSS-

"I actually think Welling, when given the proper materia, is great and in his heroic moments he absolutely demonstrates that he could play Superman. Hopefully we'll see that some day."

Well said!!!!

As for your suggestion above, I think something along those lines could work.......i mean......it IS Smallville!!!

Someone else threw out the suggestion of having ZATANNA put a charm on his glasses, which i think is a great idea too! There are so many ways they could fix the issue that i think too many people make too big a deal of it.

TENACIOUSBT-

I wish I could actually believe there was a possibility of seeing WELLING on the big screen as SUPES, but unfortunately no one had the FORSIGHT to plan for it. This show should have run for 5-6 seasons tops, then jumped onto the big screen. Unfortunately, WELLING would be dragging all the baggage of a show MOST people have already dismissed. I too, think he could pull it off splendidly, but unfortunately there aren't enough people who feel the same way.

INSTAGATORGIRL-

No way! That one scene was better than all the action scenes in SUPERMAN RETURNS combined!!!!
Talontd - 11/3/2009, 10:35 AM
InstigatorGIRL: I totally agree about the bullet catch scene. As soon as I saw the gun shoot in slow motion, I knew it would be a rip off of Returns. And it was exactly that.
InTylerWeTrust82 - 11/3/2009, 10:37 AM
To InstigatorGIRL and Taloutd, you're right, it probably will go that way.

One thing in Welling's favor is that Smallville is a show that simply won't die. What I mean is that they move it to Fridays, considered the deathslot, and it's continuing to rise in the ratings. It also supposedly remains a massive success overseas, and that overseas market could be strong enough for them to actual consider casting him. Obviously this is all fanboy thoughts, but you end Smallville with him becoming Superman, you can actually start a feature film that would work for people who haven't been watching the show.

Think about it. First off, you wouldn't need an origin story. Everyone agrees an origin story at this point -- unless it's told in some sort of quick flashback -- is pointless. But if a movie picked up where the series left off, Clark is Superman, he works at the Daily Planet, the triangle between Clark, Lois and Superman that audiences would expect would already be there, one assumes that there would also be a Perry White and new Jimmy Olsen in place. You really could hit the ground running without too much explanation of where this version of Superman came from. All of the pieces would be in place.

That make sense?
EdGross - 11/3/2009, 10:46 AM
Ed@ except they have pretty much screwed up every superman villain on the show so where would they go in a movie?? :)
teabag - 11/3/2009, 10:51 AM
Well, they haven't ruined Darkseid yet.

Could always bring back Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor.

Could maybe come up with an original villain?

Could introduce Brainiac 2.0.

Ah, I doan know.
EdGross - 11/3/2009, 10:53 AM
They could just use Welling in a Superman movie and forget about Smallville! As long as they make it clear that its not a sequel it might work!!!
joshw24 - 11/3/2009, 11:35 AM
...probably not though, huh?
joshw24 - 11/3/2009, 11:36 AM
@teabag
Scarily it is better than the other pic but not by much. Hey hows about these pics instead lol

And Im with you teabag, no bloody Smallville movie, I dont mind the series as its own continuity, its alright

But as the official big screen Superman, no way!
dancingmonkey08 - 11/3/2009, 11:44 AM
Well, your idea isnt bad josh. I do like Tom as Clark. Maybe we could just wipe everybody's mind of Smallville's existence. Everybody, just look below and Smallville will just be a memory:

dancingmonkey08 - 11/3/2009, 11:49 AM
@Talontd... What action scenes? lol. Sorry it was a total rip off of "Returns" IMO
InstigatorGIRL - 11/3/2009, 11:51 AM
InstigatorGIRL: It was...but better IMO! :)
joshw24 - 11/3/2009, 12:38 PM
bring on the REAL superman outfit, IF they do it right most people might look past the other failures or rip-offs.
SHHH - 11/3/2009, 1:02 PM
i missed this on my last post, January and beyond might bring on costumed heroes? They might be payin attention to the fans.
SHHH - 11/3/2009, 1:04 PM
Josh: Sorry man, but that bullet catch was nowhere near the mini-gun scene in Returns.

Welling =/= Superman
InTylerWeTrust82 - 11/3/2009, 1:24 PM
what scene are u guys talkin about? and what episode?
SHHH - 11/3/2009, 1:57 PM
dancingmonkey@ lmao
teabag - 11/3/2009, 2:53 PM
my 2 cents worth: welling has as much chance as any actor (period)...some may agree others may disagree, but since we aren't involved with the casting, who really gives a rats @$$...like him or not, he proved last week that he CAN pull it off...and he pulled it off well, indeed...sure the smallville suit won't look anything like this (at least until the very end), but i do like this "fan made" pic...

Tom Welling Superman

@InTylerWeTrust82...both were pretty damn impressive, but the pause after the bullet snag may have made it a bit more impressive, since he easily could have heat visioned it...kinda sent GA a message, too...

@SHHH...it was last fridays episode titled: crossfire....

@InstigatorGIRL ...returns had action scenes?!...oh, yea, two of them...yawn....:D
MisterUnderhill - 11/3/2009, 5:52 PM
Welling proved he could do Supes on the big screen by catching a CGI bullet in slow-motion? Even though, for the other 4/5 of the episode he was having the "Quirky Misadventures of Boring Clark and Lois"?
InTylerWeTrust82 - 11/3/2009, 6:26 PM
By the end of this season Clark will be wearing a Blue t-shirt with a red S but still running a round with a red coat, and jeans. Like Peterson said from his quote he will be wearing something colorful by the end of this season, so thats my guess what he'll be wearing. I just hope the Season Finale will have a better ending compared to last season.
TDKR11 - 11/3/2009, 7:23 PM
Sweet...I'm sold...I think one of the reasons they are dragging their ass with a new movie is because of the devotion SOME of us have to SV
TheDurkinKnight - 11/3/2009, 7:51 PM
I just watched that last Smallville ep just to see what all the fuss was about the bullet catching scene. Sorry guys, looked just like a fancy rip off from Superman Returns.

But I want whatever his bulletproof t-shirt is made out of ;)
MultiPurposePoni - 11/3/2009, 8:04 PM
I watched it also, to see what the all the fuss was and it was a rip-off of returns. Unfortunately alot of tv shows and movies do rip-off each other.
SHHH - 11/4/2009, 11:31 AM
Welling as big screen Superman let's hope not to me it'll just come across way too corny.
Leave him on Smallville with their version of Superman in a trenchcoat and scene stealing effects of Superman returns. No worries Im still watching Smallville the family loves it and I enjoy whining about what I dont like.
BLADE4040 - 11/4/2009, 7:48 PM
I just finished watching the entire 8th season in one week. What is up with this show? Clark never fights. He has never gotten his hands dirty. What's up with that? Also, this guy doesn't even try to fly. I'm getting ready to start watching the 9th season. I hope it's an improvement because I can't take much more of this guy who can only make sure everyone does the "right" thing whether it's their choice or not.
