Tom Hiddleston Talks About The Villany Of Loki In The Avengers; Confirms His Return For THOR 2?

With everyone wondering if Loki will appear in THOR sequel, here is our answer. It seems that not only did Tom Hiddleston confirm his return as the God of Mischief, but he also talks about how different the character is in The Avengers...

With the release of Kenneth Branagh's THOR on DVD and Blu-Ray this month (September 13), talking to MTV, Tom Hiddleston confirmed that he will be back to portray Loki in the upcoming sequel, and that the story will continue where The Avengers ends. Also, he says that as far as THOR 2 director goes, nothing is confirmed. More below:

If he talked to Brian Kirk about the sequel and where will the story go:

"I haven’t. I also don’t know that that’s actually confirmed. That’s not me being coy. I spoke to Kevin Feige last week on ["The Avengers"] set and he said, 'Oh no, we haven’t got anyone yet. We’re thinking about people. I think probably next spring is the idea because the release date is locked down," he said, adding that the storyline for the film will still likely pick-up from where "The Avengers" leaves off."

On the villany of Loki in The Avengers and how different the character is:

"In 'The Avengers' he’s really dark and kind of sociopathic, or maybe even psychopathic is the word, in a deluded way. Obviously I haven’t let go of the spiritual damage at the heart of him, it still comes from that lost place, but he’s just incredibly nasty. I think that probably in 'Thor 2' his previous actions will, he’ll have to take responsibility for what he’s done. The great thing about Loki is there is potential in him for greatness and awfulness, for great heroism and great villainy. There are still, even within 'The Avengers,' there are moments where you see within Loki a glimmer of hope and that possibility of redemption. It makes it fun to play and it makes it fun for the audience. Nobody is black and white, there are shades of grey in all of us. We all have potential for greatness and we all have flaws. I for one am championing the redemption," he added hopefully, along with a wish for a future Thor and Loki action scene: "This isn’t definitely going to happen, but I think there would be nothing more awesome than seeing Loki and Thor fight somebody side by side."

The Avengers will hit theatres on May 4, 2012, while THOR 2 is set for July 26, 2013 release!

I would actually love to see him redeemed somehow. You can't really pull it off in comics, since you cant remove him as a villain, but as an ending note for a second or third movie? i would really love to see that.

wow. i love when an actor just "gets" a character, especially one so key / awesome as Loki. he is like the polar opposite of Julian McMahon's Dr. Doom (the other Marvel villain, along with Magneto, that I think would make fantastic multimedia villains for the longterm)

Loki does sorta get redeemed in the comics after the Dark Avengers storyline where he gets reborn as a kid. He repented and fought along with the good guys once he realized Asgard was getting destroyed, which was never his intention. I would support seeing some sort of reconciliation in the movies.

So are we to assume from his commen that an Avengers' post-credit sequence would tie in directly with Thor 2 or with Iron Man 3? Since IM3 comes out first, I'm confused, intriqued, curious...but in a happy way, just like a god of mischief would WANT me to be. At THIS point, I'm starting to actually believe this bastard really IS Loki...

Every Thor film needs Loki. Regardless of how big a role he has in it, he should always be there. Also Lokis redemption is almost inevitable.

Tom is the perfect Loki. and i agree Loki should be
in every thor film. He's the great instigator. in the
comics he practiclly instigates all the big battles
of Thor and his biggest villians. Loki likes to sit
back and watch the carnage. he's awesome.

I would like to see by Thor 3 of Avengers 3 a redemptive Loki who is an Asset, similar to whats been seen in the "Fear Itself" event.

It would be a great arc for the character and Tom, definitely has the acting chops to pull it off.

I agree with Tom about a fight. That would be amazing! I think that the two should fight Skurge and some demons, just before Loki is cast into Hel by his daughter.

waitaminute,
does this mean that maybe he becomes betrayed by the alien forces he summoned????
and near the end he assists the Avengers in battling the threat???
or maybe giving Fury some info on them?
be funny if this was just him manipulating things further into a "master plan" that takes everything to Thor 3.
