Okay, so this isn't a list of the most overrated comic book movies.  Just some of the more popular, critically and comercial ones.  Here, I am merely analyzing if they deserve to be called overrated or not.  And please, do not confuse the meanings of "bad movie" and "overrated movie".  Because just because I say a movie is overrated, doesn't mean I am saying it's a bad movie.  If I call it a bad movie, then I'm saying it's a bad movie.  So lets begin:

The Dark Knight

Is "The Dark Knight" overrated?  I wouldn't say so.  This movie is in most people's Top 5, usually in top 3 spots, so does that make it overrated?  Definetly not underrated.  But here's the thing, this movie showed that to be a comic book movie doesn't mean it can't be great.  It is the only comic book movie to win the Academy Award for a major category (Best Supporting Actor, I know that there is ones that have won for effects and such though), and one of the only CBM's to actually have had a shot at Best Picture nomination.  That is a pretty big thing.  It is the first CBM to make over a billiion dollars as well.  The story and preformances are great.  I really think that this is one of the few CBM's that has actually earned the praise it has recieved.

The Avengers

Is "The Avengers" overrated?  This movie, I would say so.  When I first saw it, it was an awesome experiance.  But upon a second and third viewing I started to notice some things.  The first half is quite boring, the special effects weren't great, and the overall story is a little weak, and riddled with plot holes.  Plot holes don't normally get me mad, but this movie has one big one in particular (amongst many) that is never addressed and it gets me mad because its pretty big:  WHY CAN'T THOR PICK UP HIS HAMMER ONE SECOND, BUT FOR THE REST OF THE MOVIE HE'S FINE???  But is it bad?  Not at all, it's a fun movie to watch.  Loki is one of the few memorable MCU villains.  The characters, while some were lacking, such as Captain America (he was cool in TWS, but Avengers, he was meh) and Hawkeye, were nicely fleshed out, and I like the relationship between Hulk and Iron Man.  Overall, I feel that there have been better entries into the MCU,and that the Avengers is in fact overrated *ducks for cover*.

X-Men

Is the first "X-Men" movie overrated.  I really liked "X2", but I do think that "X-Men" is overrated.  I was watching it a few weeks ago, and the SFX were really dated.  I know that the movie was released 15 years ago, but this movie's effects don't even hold up as well as Superman in 1978's do.  The scene in particular I remember thinking that the effects suck is the scene where Cyclops has to use his blasts to get rid of the goo on Jean's face (sounds extremely dirty, I know).  The preformances were a bit on the weak side, except for Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart, and the story was solid, and the dialouge was worse than some of the more cringe worthy scenes in Arrow.  In the end, this movie is pretty good, but a little overrated.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Is "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" overrated?  Just a tad I'd say.  Here is why: the movie is great, and it came out in a year with two other great CBM's, and one okay (that's right, I don't hate TASM 2, sue me).  The reason why I'd say it is overrated is because there were rumors before that Marvel was pushing for this movie to be nominated Best Picture.  And people actually agreed.  I mean, the movie is one of my favorite MCU entries, but Oscar worthy?  The story was pretty standard, with some complexity to make it better.  The acting, I though, was okay, with no one really standing out except for Sabastion Stan, who did a great job with Bucky (I wish there was more of him).  The action is what makes this movie great, and it isn't even the best action movie of last year (The Raid 2 gets that).  In the end, the movie was good, but I would say, overrated (just a little bit).

Superman

Is the 1978 "Superman" overrated?  Well, the movie itself, isn't extremely, like Cap 2.  The story was the first of its kind, the acting was good, and the effects, I'd say, hold up for the most part.  The thing that I think makes it overrated is when Christopher Reeves is hailed as the best on screen Superman.  He did good bringing the character to life, but I will say this, he is irresponsible as Superman.  If it was only in the first half and by the end he became selfless, it would be fine.  But my god, he uses his powers for himself a lot more than he should.  At the end, the day, for the most part, was saved.  Lois died, which is sad because he liked her, but so what?  He could have learned he can't save them all, becoming a better person and a better Superman, right?  Instead, he ROTATES THE SPINING OF THE EARTH FOR A WOMAN!  That scene gets a lot of laughs, but seriously, why doesn't anyone point out that it is extremely irresponsible of Superman to do this?  That is why I think it's overrated: because it's Superman is out for self benefit, no matter what the costs (or the physics, but everyone points that out).

Well, thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed!  And I know there are many more movies that may or may not be overrated, I just listed these five.  Thoughts, agree, disagree?  Comment below! And if you liked it, show me some love and hit the red thumb!  Peace out.

absolulely none of those movies. In fact those are among the 4 best comic book movies.

If you really want to talk overrated Guardians of the galaxy, now that sh!t is overrated.

I will say.

I do think Avengers is overrated. Don't kill me just let CBM.

Avengers is a good film. No doubt in my mind about that but I don't think it's the best comic book movie of all time which so many people proclaim it as. There are better. Batman Begins, Iron Man, Spider-Man 2, The Dark Knight. Think that's all I can think of for now.

Avengers is a very good film but when you think of it, action wise and story wise it didn't revolutionize the genre which is no easy task and just because it didn't doesn't mean it isn't a great film but there are others which story wise and action wise are better.

I would say the only way Avengers possibly revolutionized the genre is by having all the different characters come together from different films but the film itself in plot isn't anything to special.

I would say the Avengers could at the highest be the third best comic book movie of all time but it isn't anywhere near The Dark Knight and Spider-Man 2.

Also I think we should criticize the film that created the genre. I mean Superman 78 was made in the 70s. They were probably high as shit to write Superman reversing the Earth's rotation to go back in time.

To each his own. I don't think any of these films are overrated at all.

I think the Amazing Spider-Man 1 is overrated. It was a decent movie but was a little underwhelming in my opinion, it was not a great start to the franchise.

I also think the Wolverine is overrated, I like the film but it still was not a proper Wolverine film. Hopefully we get Weapon X.

Underrated films is a much bigger debate. The Hellboy franchise, Incredible Hulk, Punisher War Zone, Punisher (2004), Blade 1&2, are all underrated in my opinion.

The Crow is also very underrated, under appreciated.

Easily Avengers. It is a real let down of a film when it comes to action and even dialogue.

Guardians and Avengers are the only films I would classify as overrated

Dark Knight and Avengers are both overrated. But that just my opinion. I love them both, but Rises was better for me than Dark Knight, for the simple reason that Ledger was the only reason dark knight was so good. He's the only one that held that movie together. Bale was at his worst of the 3 movies, Maggie was a terrible replacement for Katie Holmes, and there just wasn't enough Two-Face. Eckhart is a force, and he could have been a beast with more screen time.

Avengers...incredible movie, no argument. Game-changer? Sure, because it brought together the universes of 4 major characters. So much fun to watch. But yeah, it's overrated.

X-Men... I would say is underrated. X2 gets a lot more hype, and X1 is just about as good.

And Superman...I dislike pretty much everything about the character, so I won't even bother.

Personally, I hate the term "overrated" because it's just way too subjective. How do you even decide if something is overrated or not? Based on if you personally hear people talking about it a lot? Based on the particular comment threads you personally choose to read on CBM.com or any other website? Based on Rotten Tomatoes numbers or an IMDB rating?

Purely based on my experience on CBM, most users seem to have a REAL hard time deciding how the general audience perceives our favorite movies and our most hated movies. So whenever someone tries to claim that The Avengers is overrated or The Dark Knight is overrated, I tend to roll my eyes a bit.

Nothing is concrete about the word "overrated", so it just means you're bound to have people disagree and get pissed off. Underrated, however, is a different story. At least it's easier to tell when a movie is under-appreciated. Those types of lists always seem more interesting to me, anyways.

Christopher Reeve's Superman, Michael Keaton's Batman, The Avengers, those are what I'd consider to be be overrated films. The Dark Knight is borderline overrated. X-Men is far from being considered overrated seeing as how rarely anyone talks about it. And Winter Soldier just came out last year, so it's still fresh in people's mind. By the halfway point of 2015 I doubt people will still talk about it as much as they did when the film was released.

TheOverlord - 1/18/2015, 1:19 PM
Absolutely agree with Superman. Reeve was terrific, but the movie overall fell apart thanks to a weak plot and a resolution that made no [frick]ing sense. Here's my picks, in chronological order. These are all good movies, but all loved just a little TOO much...

well for me, i look at people on CBM, the scores on rottentomatoes, the comments on youtube videos that involve movies, and IMDB. Plus, I'm not antisocial. I talk to people in reality as well. So yeah, if they love a movie too much, thats how i consider overrated

Superman's a difficult one - the effects obviously aren't the best now, and the plot is pretty gimmicky, but it's hard not to marvel at what it did for the genre. You could arguably say the same thing about X-Men as well. Both fun movies, both extremely important movies, but neither is 'the best'.

I've a funny feeling some people may look back on The Avengers like that in a decade or two, but I'll always love it.

What do people have a problem with did Superman 78 make sense or not?

It was made and written in the 70s. Everyone was [frick]ing high. Besides it was made nearly 40 years ago. It wasn't meant for people nowadays.

The Avengers is the most overrated movie in my opinion. They took a lot if cues from 2005's Fantastic Four. First it is the story structure. The team doesn't get along. They fight each other. Threat emerges. They unite to fight for the better good. I found the Mr. Fantastic vs Thing fight to be better entertainment than Iron Man vs Thor. The former grew tension throughout the movie and the latter just felt like they fought just to fight. Not only that, but both films rely on a lot of humor and arguably can be considered as comedies. From " where are your ears" to Mr. Fantastic stretching his arms to get some toilet paper, I found the comic relief in FF to be better than the one in Avengers. The Acengers jokes felt forced and I never laughed once. I like Fantastic Four more than I liked Avengers. Avengers only gets the amount of God-like approbation because of its gimmick in "combining superheroes from multiple movies into one cinematic universe". Never saw Thor, so I never did connect with Hawkeye. He was just there. There was a lot of underdeveloped characters, Loki was a weak villian, and the cgi looked cartoonish. Still, Avengers is an enjoyable movie and far from terrible. I won't take away what they accomplished.

SauronsBANE - 1/18/2015, 1:29 PM
@dannramm113 I guess I'm being nitpicky here, but personally I think "overrated" is such a universal term. It's trying to paint a broad brush on how EVERYONE views a certain movie. But there's just no possible way to definitively say a movie is overrated or not based on just our own personal viewpoint.

People on CBM may say one thing about a movie, there might be a totally different opinion on another site, and it's most likely mixed on other sites as well. Youtube commenters are, for the most part, the scum of the earth and so I wouldn't pay attention to what they have to say. And the rating systems for RottenTomatoes and IMDB are inherently flawed. And obviously we can talk to people in our everyday life...but still, even that is such a ridiculously small circle of influence. What about everybody else?

My point is, we can't even get a standard opinion on ANY movie because our ways of attempting to do so are so flawed. That's why it's weird to me to try and say that any movie is overrated while another one isn't. Where the heck to we draw the line between "The perfect amount of appreciation" and "Overrated"?
Minty
Minty - 1/18/2015, 1:31 PM

Odin
Odin - 1/18/2015, 1:39 PM
The funny thing is that in 78's Superman the hole flying back in time thing was actually comic accurate. In silver age Superboy comics Clark use to "fly trough time-barrier" to withnes events of the past, it wasn't even anything special, if you have read the collection album "tales from the phantom-zone" there's at least two stories where he does it.

If we HAVE to use "overrated" to describe a movie, cbm or non-cbm, the only thing that pops into my head is Avatar.

Made over $2 billion, over 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, inspired 3 sequels...yet left absolutely no impact on pop culture, whatsoever. People never went out and bought Avatar merchandise. People don't walk around with Avatar t-shirts. You'd be hard-pressed to find Avatar-themed toys. It's weird.

...or does all that mean it's underrated? My head's starting to hurt.
Minty
Minty - 1/18/2015, 1:47 PM
@SauronsBANE - Lol! Movies that are overrated soon become so criticised that they become underrated. Same with the originally underrated ones. The other day I saw some guy complaining about how overrated Snowpiercer is because everyone keeps talking about how it's so underrated...

I don't get people.
SauronsBANE
SauronsBANE - 1/18/2015, 1:54 PM
@Minty Haha that's exactly the type of thing that confuses me about all this stuff! And not even just movies either...it applies to other stuff too, like sports.

Growing up, I was best friends with a die-hard NY Mets fan, and I've always been a die-hard fan of the Yankees. I would always rag on Mike Piazza, and he'd always claim that Derek Jeter was overrated. At one point, I remember saying that people think Jeter's so overrated, that he'd then become underrated. Like...what???

I was kind of an idiot haha.

I love the Avengers, it's one of my five favourite films (of all time), but it isn't in my list of five best films of all time. I can certainly see why people have problems with it, I love it nonetheless.

As for "WHY CAN'T THOR PICK UP HIS HAMMER ONE SECOND, BUT FOR THE REST OF THE MOVIE HE'S FINE???" I always saw that as Thor feeling unworthy for not being able to save Coulson.

In my opinion, Guardians is extremely overrated, but I'm part of a minority.

@SauronsBane

In order to determine "the most" or "the best" whatever, there needs to be some type of formula/stats used to compare these movies. Use some formula/metrics to put each up against or to compare to, whether it be Box Office Earnings vs a site's movie rating score, something that is a constant across the board.* Otherwise it's purely one's opinion. Which in this case it is, not that there's anything wrong with it because it is an editorial.

(If you really want to be impartial it would also help if you know how different sites rate movies and the formulas and/or critics they use. For instance, Armond White is a notorious movie critic, two of his best reviewed movies: Grown Ups and Jonah Hex. Two of his worst reviewed movies: Inception and The Kids Are Alright. Granted you're likely find flaws with most any site's ratings system and you won't agree with every review by the same critic, but that kind of goes without typing, right? haha)

Well, you can obviously read since you saw that i said that i don't think the dark knight is overrated. So read the definition of overrated: "have a higher opinion of (someone or something) than is deserved." not praising a particular thing it does wrong. Plus, you should read the header, which states that I am pointing out a few movies that are talked about and questioned. This isn't a list.

You can have an opinion on the quality of the film, but the avengers changed the CBM model forever. That alone prevents it from being overrated. Everything else, eh it's opinionated.

I personally agree with Whedon that Nolan nearly singlehandedly sucked all of the super, joy, and the essence of comic books, out of the entire CBM landscape. And he would've succeeded if it weren't for joss whedons avengers, and marvel in general to counteract that.

Avengers has lost the right to be called overrated (on the internet).

It's there every week. Usually whenever Marvel gains attention a handful of people stand up with "you know, Marvel isn't as good as everyone says they are... HERE are the only movies that are good and all the ones that are overrated/mediocre!" and man it's like people feel the need to remind everyone when they don't. We get it.
