Zak Penn Talks About Writing The Avengers, His Future With Marvel Studios And More!

The screenwriter of such comic book movie flops as Elektra and Fantastic Four shares his thoughts on being replaced by Joss Whedon, what he thinks of the movie and whether he'll ever work with Marvel again...

Despite writing the mostly popular X-2, Zack Penn is not a popular screenwriter among comic book fans. Responsible for awful movies like Elektra and Fantastic Four (both of which saw major changes to the source material) there was a universal scream of horror when it was revealed that he would be penning the script to The Avengers. That's probably why so many of us were thankful to discover Joss Whedon was rewriting the damned thing.

Speaking to Collider, Penn is clearly still excited for the movie, but it certainly sounds as if Marvel Studios have no plans to work with him again any time soon. Here are a few excerpts from the interview, but you can read it in its entirety by clicking the link below.

On How The Script Has Changed Since He Was Involved:

Do you believe in Joss Whedon? I believe in him. That’s my comment. If you believe in Joss, you should be excited.

On How Excited He Is Regardless Of His Involvement:

Actually, Joss and I went to the same college, so we have a long history. I’m very excited. I can’t wait to see what happens with it. And, it’s weird because Alphas is almost the inverse. If you know the comic book world, this is the flipside of something like The Avengers. So, it will be weird, next year, to have The Avengers coming out while I’m working on this show.

On What He Thinks About Jeremy Renner As Hawkeye:

To be fair, I think he is in The Avengers because I pushed them. I said, “We’ve got to get Jeremy Renner for that part!” Him being a cool guy came full circle, in that he’s gotten what he deserves. So many people have loved his work. At first, everyone was like, “Who’s Jeremy Renner?” And, I was like, “Trust me, he’s awesome!” Now, he is Hawkeye and he’s in Mission: Impossible, and everything else. I had already written The Avengers, though, way before he was cast. I had already handed in the script. It’s off and it’s its own beast now. Joss is the man in charge of that.

On What He Can Reveal About The Avengers:

I can’t say. I had to sign a non-disclosure agreement for The Avengers, so I can’t really speak about it too much. I’m pretty limited.

On How Much Joss Whedon Has Changed The Script:

I just can’t answer that. I’m not allowed to. I have a big mouth and they made me sign a contract.

On Whether He Will Once Again Work With Marvel:

I hope it will go forward, in the future. Obviously, they’re now owned by Disney. I’ve done a lot of movies for them, so I don’t know what’s left for me to do. The Avengers really was the last big job. But, I hope so. I love Marvel, and I love all those people over there. I can’t even count anymore, how many movies I’ve done with them.

On Whether He Has Any Interest In Writing A Movie For DC:

I am, but if you know the comics, DC tends to be more larger than life and more mythological with characters less based in humanity. Superman is something out of fantasy and not out of science fiction, in my mind. So, I’ve always been more drawn to Marvel, even when I was a kid. By the way, I did read both, but the movies were just harder for me to imagine.

With an all star cast which includes Chris Evans as Captain America, Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Rufallo as Bruce Banner, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, The Avengers is set to be released on May 4, 2012!

I wasn't stoked to hear the Zak Penn was writing the script. I liked The Incredible Hulk, but I felt like it was lacking in dialogue. I'm glad to hear that Joss Whedon is rewriting it, though. He's great with dialogue and story.

The guy hasn't been involved with anything good. The script of The Incredible Hulk was average, but mostly poor (that whole movie was saved only by some decent acting and the amazing action sequences) and Penn is not only responsible for crap like Elektra, but also X-Men 3! Thank God Whedon came along and sorted things out. People may still doubt him a a director (God knows why) but no one can argue that he's a great writer.

@Darkmatter: Norton's involvement with the script for TIH was just with dialogue he only wrote the dialogue. Oha nd how can you put Nightcrawler in a movie without touching upon christianity?

@Elguson uh, yes. Firefly/Serenity alone is why we should trust him, one of the best underappreciated TV series of all time.

I think some of the ideas from X3's script were good, but some decisions were really wrong.

not sure if they were Brett Ratner fault or the writers fault.

I think the original script was longer than the final movie.

so Brett and Fox are responsible for that.

He didn't wrote X2, he did the story for it. However, he did wrote the script for X3 and the video game that tied X2 and X3 together. And he never wrote for the Fantastic Four movie, just the video game that was made for it.

I like Joss Whedon as a writer but he's an absolute shit-ass director.

Hopefully he can change that for the Avengers.

Prove me wrong Joss.

@Darkmatter: So the only reason you liked TIH was because of the dialogue? Okay just clarifying. It's kinda funny since Indoraptor12 just said, after you, that that was where TIH was lacking. Personally I liked the dialogue, but I didn't think it made the movie by any means.

@ ELgUaSoN - I'm not going to lie. My Joss Whedon experience has been the Buffy film/Series, Angel, Speed &.. even Waterworld. I've never watched Firefly, however i have heard NOTHING but good things about it.

Just going by the Buffy/Angel series - Joss knows how to write a script giving multiple characters enough screen time, as well as being able to handle group dialogue eficiently.

Seeing as we already have the solo-films to get the character introductions/development out of the way, (Hulk, Iron Man, IM2, and the forthcoming Cap & Thor) there won't be a need when you go into the film to, Introduce them as NEW characters. We already know who they are. I think Mr. Whedon is going to blow us all away.
It's already going to be an epic film, And i'm pretty sure Joss has enough talent and knowledge to allow it to go from "Epic" to "Cluster[frick]".

Er... the extent of Norton's influence WAS dialogue...
FoxKnox
FoxKnox - 4/16/2011, 11:19 AM
Okay, calm down. Jesus.

Look, I'm just pointing out that what the dude accused you of (IE: liking TIH only because of the dialogue) seems to be pretty accurate despite your insistence it wasn't, given you originally said Norton's influence is what made it 'semi-bearable', and as I pointed out... Norton only rewrote dialogue.

So I don't know what the hell you're rambling about.

People seem to forget Joss Whedon launched and wrote the initial run of Astonishing X-Men. That reason alone is why I was excited to hear he re-wrote the script and was chosen to direct The Avengers. He knows how to balance teams and make each member have an important role and not have one character outshine the others. Wolverine is my favorite X-Man but his role in Whedon's Astonishing was limited. He did have a lot of cool moments though, but I loved how Whedon portrayed Cyclops' leadership more than anything. I point this out because when I first heard the casting of Chris Evans I initially thought how is Evans going to command Robert Downey, Jr.? But now after seeing footage of Captain America, I am very confident in Evans and I can see Whedon pushing for leadership qualities out of Evans' Captain America, much like Cyclops in Astonishing.

I dont like this guy for taking credit for Renner....he said he didnt write him into the script after basically saying he got the guy the job ( then why didnt you add him to the script) sounds like he made a suggestion Joss picked it up and Penns trying to take credit, and to go on in the same sentence like he had anything to do with Renner getting in MI? [frick] this guy. Renners a very independent artist and would have had to have been interested in the first place to pick up the project.

I garuntee, because he is under contract right now he wont say anything bad but when that clause is over we are going to see a nastier, and whiney side to this guy.
