One Big Marvel Universe Across All Film Studios? Joss Whedon And Marc Webb Weigh In

Marvel fans have dreamed and debated the pros and cons of one large Marvel Cinematic Universe across Fox, Sony and Marvel Studios for quite some time now. But what does "Avengers: Age of Ultron" director Joss Whedon and "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" director Marc Webb think?

Fox owns the X-Men and Fantastic Four film rights. Sony owns the Spider-Man film rights. And Marvel Studios owns basically every other Marvel character within the comic book publisher's database. Fans have discussed what it means to Marvel Studios not having the likes of Wolverine and Spider-Man available for the Avengers roster ad nauseum but what do two prominent superhero film directors think? When the question was presented to Marc Webb [via Collider], here's what he had to say. "Wolverine, Iron Man, those would be pretty fantastic. The thing is, you set up certain rules in the universe, about what people are aware of, our universe...[Fox] built a history about mutants which does not coalesce with our world. That presents a lot of difficulties and a lot of challenges that would be hard to overcome," said Webb about the prospect of adding character belonging to other film studios to the Spider-Man fictional film world.

When the same question was presented to Joss Whedon, he acknowledged the same problem raised by Webb but says he can figure it out as working within parameters is what he does best. Said Whedon [via CBR], " I mean, yeah. You give me the parameters and I work with them. I have so many actors, I have so many characters to service that it's not like I'm like, "Well this won't work unless I have Spider-Man and Wolverine!" I'm just making my movie. Yeah, it's cool to think about stuff like that and if we reached an era where those studios could cooperate on that level I think that would be super dope. Whenever you see somebody crossing over to something it gives it pop. Like "Muder She Wrote" and "Magnum [P.I.]" -- great crossover. I got excited."

So now I turn it over to you, the fans. If film rights returning to Marvel Studios and rebooting is not an option, how do you shoehorn existing X-Men and Spider-Man continuity into the very well established canon of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

There's no reason why Spider-Man couldn't fit into the MCU but it's a lot harder for the X-Men.

Fox, Marvel, Sony, get your asses together and team up! Do it for the fans!

As cool as it would be, realistically the universes dont match.

Where was Spiderman when New york was attacked by aliens?

and the X-Men?

there you have it. It doesnt make sense.

X-Men I think could fit in but I think it should be made like its own mini universe like it is in the comic books, thats the only way I could see it fitting in.

No. The only time Spider Man or Mutants enter the MCU should be when the rights are handed back over to Marvel. Keep the worlds separate until then. Fox are doing what they're doing. Marvel are doing phenomenally by themselves and Sony are doing well with Spiderman. Let it stay that way.

@Dandy

Yeah thats always bothered me too, everyone hates mutants but aliens, gods and other super powered people are all fine, mutants though those guys gotta die! Makes no fricking sense even in the comics :/

I think Spidey would be the easiest to tie into the MCU currently since they have already rebooted it and Sony has a pretty good relationship with Marvel still. Fantastic Four as well since they are rebooting it, but Fox doesn't seem to get along as well with Disney/Marvel, especially with that whole Quicksilver rights fiasco. I want Disney to have FF back the most because they fit into what they're doing with going cosmic and especially having all of those great FF villains like Dr. Doom and such would be nice to have for Avengers films or the like. Spidey and X-Men however, work better alone so they can stay at their respective studios to allow Marvel to keep delving into their more obscure properties rather than having to focus on the big names all of the time.

@MAC Damn, Marvel and Fox have one heated beef with each other. The Quicksilver situation probably didn't help either.

One giant TV Universe with like an Avengers show, a Spidey + FF show, a Heroes for Hire show with Daredevil and an X-Men show. These hour-long shows could show the day to day lives of the heroes and utilise tons of cool villains. Cross-overs galore and end of season team-ups against major villains! The possibilities here are eneless!

Its gonna get a lot harder to incorporate TASM series with the MCU the more we go into additional movies. When Avengers came out, the possibility of TASM in the MCU seemed to be an easy proposition. If they don't act fast enough, then plot holes and continuity issues will make it even harder.

Joss seems willing to do it but the other company are the ones who need to get in for it to happen and I love how joss didn't say no he said he would give it a try you never want someone who says no you want someone who will give it shot

The reason people in comics fear mutants because they are unknown. People like Thor, Iron Man, the Avengers, Fantastic Four, etc are all public. The guy next to you could be a super powered mutant and you wouldn't know. That's why people fear mutants.

@TheWolverine08

That makes no sense.... Honestly if I had a mother [frick]ing god being a vigilante on my world I would be sure as hell more afraid of him than a mutant, or hell why aren't people afraid of Iron Man?! All it takes is one corrupted AI and all of his armors could wreak havoc across the whole planet.

All of the MCU films take place relatively close together. The Avengers took place in 2011 and TASM took place in 2012.

@ekrolo2 True. I guess you really have to incorporate suspension of disbelief when dealing with the X-Men. Lol

It's hard now because of established universes and such, but it would be great for the Fantastic Four reboot to have ties to Avengers.

Although studios are absolute idiots who are too prideful to make an alliance even when it could make them so much $.

The argument of Spider-Man not assisting in the battle of New York makes no sense to me. The kid lives in Queens, and presumably would have been stuck in class at the time of the invasion. By the time he was able to sneak out of his school, which likely would have been on lockdown, and webbed himself all the way over to Manhattan, the portal would have closed. Or maybe he just didn't have his powers at the time? There was a lot of construction going on in The Amazing Spider-Man. So, that universe I think is easily and naturally compatible with the MCU, and I'd love to see some signs of interconnectivity. The X-Men film universe, not so much. That can really only exist by itself, and continuity wise it barely even does that coherently.

Spiderman would be very easy to fit into the MCU universe. Each side puts in half the money, or maybe 1/4 Sony and 3/4 Disney and they get the same amount in the returns. Have the money be made using both studios resources.
Only problem is that Kevin Feige is very power-hungry, and I do not believe he would allow anybody else to have power/say.

Personally, I'm fine with their being separate universes for these characters. It gives each character the room to do their thing. Would there really be a reason for Peter Parker to dress up like Spider-Man if The Avengers AND X-Men were roaming around New York? Probably not. If he did, he'd be chasing after shoplifters and jaywalkers. The point is that these characters are much more interesting when they are the main attraction.

As much As I'd Like To See This, It Would Never Happen, I mean, Fans Have only So Much Say In These Things, Overall The Studios Make The Final Decision..It's Sad, Because If They Put They're Crap Aside, These Movies Would Make A Hell Of Alot Of Moolah!!

We can just add Spidey.

Just keep it going the way its already going. Wolverine will end up being worse if he goes to Marvel (character wise) in my honest opinion. Spider-Man would be fine. But I honestly think it's best off Fox has the mutants for now. Many people will call me crazy for this but I respect what Fox are trying to do with their universe.

I would love to see the personality conflict between Spider-Man and Wolverine in a buddy-cop style movie.
