Kevin Feige On CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER's Connection To AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON

The Marvel Studios chief on how Captain America: The Winter Soldier segues into the Avengers sequel and who has final say on Age of Ultron - himself or Joss Whedon? Plus, where Hulk and Hawkeye fit in.

Kevin Feige and Avengers Age of Ultron Joss Whedon - Hawkeye and Hulk Winter Soldier segue

Captain America: The Winter Soldier will finally be released in the US this Friday (I'm sure if Cap were real, he'd have a problem with his film being released abraod first before hitting theaters back home) but the cameras are already rolling on Joss Whedon's Avengers: Age of Ultron.  Talking to Joblo, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige stated:

"I don’t want to give too much away but it is very much a continuation of this story line and sort of going back into THE AVENGERS fold. Steve is now torn between is he just a soldier? You know there is a scene in WINTER SOLDIER where Anthony Mackie asks, “Well what would you want to do if you are not a soldier anymore?” and part of his journey in THE AVENGERS is to answer that question."

And on Avengers: Age of Ultron as a whole, where do Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) stand? These are two characters that don't have solo films post-Avengers and who have been largely absent from Phase II of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

"I would love to do [Incredible Hulk 2] with Mark Ruffalo. But part of the fun of AGE OF ULTRON was saying, you’ve seen another IRON MAN adventure before, you see another THOR adventure and another CAP adventure, but we haven’t seen the Green Goliath again. So that was important in the characters you haven’t seen – Hulk being one of them and Hawkeye being one of them – ULTRON will make up for it. They have very big parts in AGE OF ULTRON. "

As the head of Marvel Studios, Feige obviously has a lot of control over the general direction the Marvel Universe but on Age of Ultron, there's Joss Whedon, a director who's coming off the biggest film in decades. Who has more control on the direction of the sequel?

"Both. It really is both. The only way we can work is with a very, very intense collaboration. And I think Joss was aware of that when he signed up for us the first time. It’s still the case this time. But to his credit, he hasn’t said, I directed the third highest grossing movie of all time, I don’t need anybody. He is very, very collaborative and he is also very, very, very good. Just like the Russo’s and like James Gunn right now on GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY. We are very lucky to work with people that are so collaborative with us and can elevate our initial idea. Even to elevate something in the way that we weren’t expecting. That’s their job and the best of them are able to do that very, very well. There are things that Joss is doing in AGE OF ULTRON that will be amongst the best elements that we’ve ever brought to the screen."

I'm glad Hulk and Hawkeye are getting bigger roles. Hawkeye especially... Felt like he drew the short straw in The Avengers.

I'm looking forward to seeing Thor.

Seriously, why has nobody mentioned or even asked about Thor? I hope he's not sleeping around with Jane on earth. I wouldn't mind seeing Asgard briefly at the start of the movie.

I am really exicted to see what is going to happen in this phrase and how it's going to lead into Phase 3..speaking of which I have a idea for the third movie: The movie is based on House of M expect Thanos is the cause as he manages to rewrite everything so his lover Death is alive and he rules over the earth. And the end of the movie Captain Amercia, Thor and Iron Man are killed and the next films take place in this new universe with new pepole playing Captain Amercia, Iron Man and Thor since they are different from the Phase 1-3 CA,IM and Thor

@Kurne - agreed!

Thor is my favorite character.. I really liked Thor -The Dark World, but I feel that Thor whasn´t well used yet.. But, I don´t think Thor will appear very much in AoU.

Does anybody realise that the name of the ship in the beggining of the Captain -Winter Soldier movie is LEMURIAN STAR? Could this be an clue for Namor in MCU? Some think that the blue guy on Shield it may be fron Atlantis... And now this guys with water jet packs during the Avengers AoU filming in South Korea.. Could we see Namor comming?

Thor's the only one that seems out of place when you think about fitting him into this movie (from what I've seen/heard so far).

Other than being muscle, that is.

It's gonna be great. I like how the directors and Marvel all have a good workin' relationship.
@marccampos, I'd love to see Namor in an Avengers movie (don't thin' it's gonna happen though), Namor was my favorite waaaay back in the day when I first started readin' comics, but then I picked up Cap & the Falcon #208, and cap took the number one spot.

What would we do without Kevin Feige? Seriously, if DC had someone like him we'd all have a $600 million Wonder Woman box office hit starring some amazing actress you never even would have thought would be great for the role but is and a Green Lantern movie that's as cool as GotG set entirely in space starring someone who isn't Ryan Reynold. If FOX had a Kevin Feige we'd all be excited to go watch Fantastic Four: The Coming of Galactus this summer with a villain that looks like this:

[SPOILER:ON]Also, is that why Hawkeye wasn't in The Winter Soldier? He was on a mission to rescue the twins from HYDRA...um, for HYDRA? :/ [SPOILER:OFF]

@Mark Julian, I don't thin' Cap would have a problem with his movie bein' released overseas first, he spent a lotta time abroad with the Invaders and knows how important Europe is to the U.S. ;)

Unfortunately, Namor's rights are at Universal and I believe it is complicated. I would love for Namor to become part of the MCU. Especially since Bucky/Winter Soldier is in the fold. A movie with Cap, Bucky and Namor: AWESOME! Maybe even adapt Brubaker's "Man Without A Face" storyline. Lot's of characters in that arc. Rogers' Cap, Bucky, Bucky's Cap, Winter Soldier, Black Widow, Jim Hammond Human Torch, Toro, Namor, Master Man, Batroc and of course The Man Without A Face who has several cool battes with Namor. It is one of the coolest Cap stories and Namor is very badass in it. I'll go so far as saying it perhaps has the most badass moment by Namor, EVER! If you haven't read it, it is well worth the money. It is only a 6 issue arc and I believe that it is now sold as an all-in-one book.

CapemA - 4/1/2014, 5:20 AM
@ Batmaniac: I believe that Omega's (correct me if I'm wrong) point is that if WB would set up a DC movie studio (similar to New Line which is owned by WB) and put a Kevin Feige type in charge of said studio then things would be better.

I agree with you, I don't think that everything that Marvel has released has been the second coming. Though, I do like the vast majority.

Yeah.. I know that Namor is on Universal.. I´ve heard that the rights could come back to Marvel in 2016... Do you guys know anything about that? If that is true? Namor is a one of the majors of Marvel... It would be amazing to see him on screen. Let´s hope that some day it really happens!
CapemA
CapemA - 4/1/2014, 5:54 AM
@ marccampos I don't know if and when the rights revert back to Marvel. Feige is usually vague on the subject.

On a side note, have you read The Man Without A Face? Brubaker nailed Namor. His arrogance, his self-righteousness, how powerful he is, everything.
dinkinflicka
dinkinflicka - 4/1/2014, 5:59 AM
Clearly Alan Taylor won't be back to direct another movie for Marvel. Feige seems like a cool guy and all credit goes to him for what has happened in the MCU. But if you read a lot of stories about him you get the impression he is a control freak and basically forced Favreau to shoot Iron Man 2 the way he wanted it done. Also he certainly did Ed Norton wrong when it came to the Hulk and basically said Norton wasn't a team player. Don't get me wrong Ruffalo did a good job but for me the Hulk in Avengers was great because Whedon made him great as Hulk not as Banner. Either way Feige is an interesting guy came up as an assistant on the X-Men films then became a producer simply because he was a comic book nerd and knew all the material.

Gary8264 - 4/1/2014, 6:21 AM
@marccampos, I just know what CapemA has posted, at one time the rumor was that Namor's rights had already been reverted back to Marvel. But, that's not the case now, so all we can do is wait.
@CapemA, yeah, The Man Without A Face was a great story line. I always liked how Namor would just do what he wants unless it concerned Cap, and then he'd listen for 'bout 80% percent of the time.

New Line isn't owned by WB. New Line was a standalone studio owned by Time Warner (same company that ones WB), until 2006, when Time Warner merged the 2 studios under the WB name...
