Joss Whedon On How ULTRON Will Differ From The Comics In THE AVENGERS 2

While talking to EW, the director gives us a few tidbits on how he plans to approach the villain in the sequel. It seems Whedon is going to strip away some of the crazed robot's powers in an attempt to "humanize" him somewhat! Read on for more..

In the Marvel comics, Ultron is pretty much a robot version of Superman where powers and abilities are concerned -- and then some! Super strength, speed, flight, intellect..various sonic death rays! You name it, he's got it. But it seems Joss Whedon is planning to make a few changes in that regard for the big screen incarnation of the character. “I knew right away what I wanted to do with him,” Whedon tells Entertainment Weekly. “He’s always trying to destroy the Avengers, goddamn it, he’s got a bee in his bonnet. He’s not a happy guy, which means he’s an interesting guy. He’s got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff. So we’ll take away some of those powers because at some point everybody becomes magic, and I already have someone [a new character, Scarlet Witch] who’s a witch.” The director adds that he intends to “to ground [the character] while still evoking that guy.” And it seems that it's Ultron's intense rage that makes him such a big fan. “As a character I love [Ultron], because he’s so pissed off.” So it won't be just Ultron's Hank Pym shaped origins that will be tinkered with! What do you guys think of this?

sounds pretty cool, his performance will depend on if he has a deep menacing voice or not.

i am kinda torn on stripping some of his powers away, but on the other side ultron is a little OP and there should be no way the avengers should be able to beat him without it not being a cop out but as long is ultron remains a challenge and the essence of his character is kept, i would not mind

Ultron better be an ass-kicker in this movie. It's definitely going to take the whole roster, including QS and SW, to take down Ultron.

As long as Ultron's essence is kept in tack, he can kick their asses (show he can also take on Hulk and Thor on his own and come out on top), menacing and is a genuine threat. I am okay with it. Even though I am still not thrilled about the origin change. Also, him getting vibranium somewhere in Africa cause it is a global movie *wink wink* would be amazing.

"...as long is ultron remains a challenge..."

I definitely trust that there are challenges in mind for the movie. Will those necessarily all be about "we all gotta pitch in to wrestle this robot to the ground!"? Probably not.

If Ultron proves to be the result of all of the characters, I'm sure the theme of the movie will be the consequences of who they are. It seems in line with what Whedon said yonks ago, about going more personal and examining the characters themselves. He also commented on Iron Man 3 with "now what am I gonna do?!", suggesting that the very personal exploration of Tony was something he had in mind, too.

And really, it's what Whedon does. He writes character drama. No matter who the villain is, the interesting thing is how he/she/it'll reflect back on the main characters. He'd find anything else shallow and boring, and I'm pretty much of the same opinion.

Ultron in Earths Mightiest Heroes was bad ass, taking over Starks armor and disintegrating Thor

Simon-exactly,thats who he writes, he puts characters before anything else, thats why i love whedon, he has said multiple times that he plans to go deeper and twist the knife in characters

I hate how hes just giving SW "magic"
I prefer her Probability manipulation powers. They're far more interesting and defined.
Take it in stages Whedon.

When I heard ideas for the avengers, I was stoked but the ideas for this are starting to sound iffy and could possibly derail the movie. I'll stay hopeful that the film pans out well but when some directors are granted too much creative rein when they are successful with their first film, it can at times back fire or becomes another or an bigger success.

I have yet to see if Whedon can make badass villains. Loki was shit.

All Whedon's talking about is how Ultron started. In the beginning he wasn't as powerful as he's become like many of the characters in comics. I can see the evolution of the character so that he becomes more and more of a threat.

Like I said before, Marvel is continuing to ignore the source material more and more. 'Humanize' Ultron?? WTF?!! In other words he'll sort of look like Ultron but he won't really act like Ultron. Hope I'm getting worried over nothing but Whedon's direction with this does not inspire confidence.

You have to make sure he's not too watered down or any threat to Thor or the Hulk makes no sense. If he's just a robot with a conscious then Captain America could take him down by himself.

I think making Ultron near invincible would have been interesting because his human traits would be his weakness and ultimate downfall.

But Joss knows best. Curious to see what he does with the character.

boy, people jump to conclusions really soon without any footage being released or a single frame being shot of the film yet, just let it go its course , wait and watch and when we get a trailer then you can complain or praise

I admit, this tidbit is interesting.

On another note, I find it very hypocritical to hear an Atheist say the GD phrase or say "Oh my god!" Just saying, that's how I feel about it. And Joss Whedon is an admitted Atheist.

@Kane I see what you mean but that's not the case with Wanda. Her powers may look like magic but they're just make improbable but not impossible events happen whereas magic most likely makes the impossible reality. Whedon has said before she'll be a telekinetic and have vast magic powers.

Whatever. Concerning that the MCU is taking very large steps away from the villians as they are represented in the 616 or Ultimate U. But it is what it is, and will be what it will. If it's entertaining I am on board, and will do my damndest not to compare to 'what should be according to canon' so as not to spoil the movie.

Personally, I'm thrilled that the folks behind the Marvel Cinematic Universe aren't using the original comics as biblical text. As someone who has been reading superhero stories for his entire life, I don't have any interest in seeing carbon copy versions of old plots, as that's guaranteed to eliminate any kind of surprise elements in the movies and completely smother filmmakers' creativity. As long as they remain true to the spirit and personalities of the characters - as they've been doing for the last five years - then I'll walk away a satisfied fan.

I wonder if ultron will be portrayed by an actor or if it will be a completely cgi sort of thing. I'm glad that Ultron is going to be a bit more grounded and humanized. I can't imagine an extremely overpowered and robotic robot being nearly as interesting as what it sounds like joss is doing.
There is nothing to worry about with this movie. The only thing that would concern me would be if Joss's enthusiasm seemed lacking, but the exact opposite is the case here. When he really puts his all into something, it consistently turns out to be the finest entertainment you can find.
Most anticipated movie of my lifetime so far.
