E3: Captain America: Super Soldier has potential

E3: Captain America: Super Soldier has potential

Does it or not? Well, it looks like it does show some potential!

Seriously, don't blow off what I'm about to say. Yes, Thor was horrible. Just a waste of space. I don't know what the hell Sega was thinking letting the game through in the state that it was. This isn't about Thor, though. This is about the Captain America videogame and how it actually has promise.

I only played about ten minutes of the game, and it may be because I had little expectations going in, but I was really impressed by the game -- especially with the fighting system. It's very much like Batman: Arkham Asylum's combat mechanic, actually.

The controls are pretty simple. A on the Xbox 360 lets you dodge attacks, X is punch, and Y lets you grab enemies. B is a counter attack that can be performed if you time the move right, which you should be able to do easily -- enemies that are about to hit you flash yellow. You also have your shield of course which you can throw automatically or aim at targets with. Nailing attacks and counters will fill up your focus meter (represented by a blue bar) which allows you to perform strong attacks on enemies.

Fighting a group of bad guys is very seamless since you bounce from one enemy to the next, very much like in Arkham Asylum. The graphics are pretty damn good, and show off the pain in character's faces well, like Baron Strucker as I made him electrocute himself by shoving his own electric hand into his chest during a boss fight.

As for the story, it's actually penned by a Marvel writer and revolves around the same plot as the upcoming movie, minus the origin story stuff in the beginning. Chris Evans and some of the other actors from the film lend their voices to their respective characters in the game as well.

I also tried out the Wii version of Captain America and I was less impressed with that. Understandable, though -- the Wii version is aimed at a younger audience. Still, that fact doesn't excuse the choppy visuals. I did like how you can throw Captain America's shield independently of the character's movements by targeting with the Wiimote.

If you don't believe me when it comes to Super Soldier, I understand. Hell, I wouldn't believe me if I was in your position. I'm going to hit up the Sega booth at E3 and get you some actual video of the combat in action, so watch out for that soon.

Otherside: Well, that does sound pretty good! So will you be getting Captain America: Super-soilder game?

Awesome!! I'm definitely gonna pre-order this at GameStop. You can get an exclusive Ultimate WWII outfit for Cap, and extra challenge modes. Although I don't like how this guy kept mentioning Arkham Asylum. I heard the main problem with Thor (I haven't played it yet) was that it was too similar to another game, and didn't have enough originality. But I'll try this game out and see if I like it. The only Sega produced game from the Marvel titles I really like was The Incredible Hulk. Iron Man was decent, but when I played the Iron Man 2 demo, that was horrible. Hopefully this game does better.

Iron Man 1 and 2 games, I thought, were mediocre at best. I don't have either of them.

The Incredible Hulk game I thought was much better, but I'm not going to pay 20 bucks for it when I can just play my Ultimate Destruction game.

Haven't tried Thor yet, but I heard its the best of the four so far.

Cap, however, looks like I'll really enjoy it. If he keeps mentioning Arkham Asylum like that, its a good thing. Thats one of my favorite games.

@ironknight The Incredible Hulk has a online multiplayer mode on Xbox Live (DLC is free). I think it's worth buying, just try getting the one that has the Red Hulk exclusive from GameStop.

And I like Batman Arkham Asylum, my favorite superhero game by far, but I just think Cap should be it's own game. Not like, "Hey, this scene reminds me of Batman Arkham Asylum!" It should be it's own, not copying something that was better. Batman is Batman, and Cap is Cap. It shouldn't have to be the other way around.

Not saying it will anyways, it's just this guy's opinion anyways so it might be different on anyone else's point of view. In fact I don't care if it copies Arkham Asylum too much with the gameplay style, I just want some originality out of it. Hopefully we'll get to see that.

@ Wildaniel

The game isn't being produced by Sega at all. Its only being published by them, thank god. The games being made by Next Level Games.

I think its worth noting Captain America Super Solider has been in development for three years as well. Witch is why all the recent stuff looks good.

The team had actually started the combat system before Arkham Asylum was even released, so the comparison between the two is mostly coincidental however I'm sure since its release they've been taking a lot of notes from AA's combat system (only a good thing). This game does show unique potential though, (I mean their weren't any shield throws in Arkham Asylum).

I'll probably pre-order, witch I've NEVER done with a movie game before. For the same reasons you all haven't, the difference with this one is that its actually showing promise.

Although; the real question here is... Are you willing to shell out $60 for an 8 hour story, 12 hour game if you collect everything? Depends how much a decent Captain America game means to you as a fan, because most people could finish the game in a rental week.

Either way, here is a recent demo of the tutorial:

@Jarren0 It's actually a lower price than $60, but good point. I still think it's worth buying.

@otherside,

using destructoid's text without giving them credit wasn't very cool.

Why is this article parsed this way?

The CBMer just took one, single article and cut it up into all these separate "quote" pieces. It looks like it's several different quotes from several different people who were at E3, when really it's just one guy writing one article.

Iron Man 1 the game was ok. Have it for Ps2. The flying controls are difficult to master. I rented IM2 for Wii and I saw an improvement. War Machine. Incredible Hulk is awesome. Have yet to play Thor for Wii. Captain America will be the best.
