DR STRANGE: Sorceror Supreme

DR STRANGE: Sorceror Supreme

"If you do not pay the utmost attention, magic can get away from you in a heartbeat. Every spell, every sigil, every manipulation... you must keep a close eye on everything so it doesn't backfire." --DR STRANGE

Who is DR STRANGE?
Dr. Stephen Strange was once a gifted but egotistical surgeon who met an accident which rendered his hands useless on his profession. He then sought out a mystic known as The Ancient One to heal his broken hands. Humbled by his ordeal, not only did he gain the use of his hands back he also learned and mastered the Mystic Arts and became Earth's Sorcerer Supreme.

The character debuted in Strange Tales #110 (July 1963), he was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. Early stories revealed that Doctor Strange used magical artifacts to augment his power, such as the Cloak of Levitation, the Eye of Agamotto, the Book of the Vishanti, and the Orb of Agamotto. From the first story, Strange's residence, the Sanctum Sanctorum, was a part of the character's mythos.

When DR STRANGE first defeated the dreaded demon Dormammu, the Ancient One gifted him with new mystical objects.

DR STRANGE got a superhero look "revamp" on the late 60s, he was given a form-fitting blue costume, a full-head mask and a secret identity as Dr. Stephen Sanders.

In the early 70s DR STRANGE along with Namor and Hulk will band together to become the Defenders.

DR STRANGE later would need to hide-out so in his stead he created avatars. To handle his human affars, he made the construct of a businessman named Vincent Stephen. To handle his Mystical affairs, he created the creature known only as Strange.

Strange:

In the Last Rites storyline, the constructs were gone and DR STRANGE has to regain his title as the Sorceror Supreme, during this time he wore this magical armor

After that storyline, DR STRANGE emerges with this look, which he would wear for only one adventure.

The next time we see him, he still kept his hair long, went back to wearing his old cape, and added a sunglass to his look.

In the Mid 90s DR STRANGE dropped the youthful image, and went into updating his classic look. His cape is now of a trenchcoat, and his shirt sports intricate designs.

In 2000 DR STRANGE is revealed to be a part of the Illuminati, a secret organization that guides events in the Marvel Universe, they are led by some of the most influential and important people in the said Universe.

One act done by the Illuminati is the banishment of Hulk, to another planet. Unfortunately an angered Hulk went back and attacked the members of the Illuminati one-by-one. DR STRANGE faced-off with the Hulk, but the Hulk broke DR STRANGE's hands to render his magic useless, DR STRANGE became desperate and drank a vial that contains the essence of a powerful demon. DR STRANGE was winning but he realized that he is being influenced by the demon, with that realization, Hulk started to defeat him.

DR STRANGE felt that he'd been using to much dark magic, and must train in the use of light magic again. In the end, he failed in his duties as Sorcerer Supreme, thus his title is removed from him, and transferred to Brother Voodoo. This time he just wear regular clothes.

But if comicbook history serves as well, sooner or later he'll be back as Sorceror Supreme.

LIVE MEDIA APPEARANCE
In 1978 there was a TV-movie adaptation of Dr. Strange it starred Peter Hooten as Dr. Stephen Strange. It was produced by Universal Television, and served as the unsuccessful pilot for a series.

POWERS & ABILITIES
Note: Due to the nature of comicbooks being an on-going tale, the character's powers along with his appearance, is in a constant state of flux.

Sorcery: Dr. Strange has great mastery of the mystic arts, which he uses to defend his reality from otherworldly threats.

Personal Powers: As a result of his mystic training, Stephen is capable of a great many abilities, stemming from the innate resources of his body/mind/soul, such as:

Astral Projection, Telepathy, Hypnotism and Other Psychic Abilities

Longevity: Dr. Strange's lifespan has been extended in a manner similar to that of his mentor the Ancient One due to a successful contest against Death.

Universal Sources: By manipulating the ambient mystical energy of the universe, along with local magical energy, Dr. Strange can perform a great many functions. Commonly this is seen as:

Mystic Bolts, Transmutation, Telekinesis, Teleportation, Standard Shields, Dimensional Travel andConjuring of objects

Various other spells: He can also use this mystical energy to cast spells of a near infinite variety. These spells seem to be quicker to perform but lesser in power than spells using divine energy. Strange has used his magics altogether to become intangible, invisible, fly, alter his clothing through minor molecular control, absorb nearly all forms of energy, control and manipulate elements, and more.

Divine Sources: Dr. Strange can channel energy from countless mystical beings in countless dimensions to empower his spells.

Darkness of the Divine Conduit (Black Magic): By sheer force of will "take" the power of another entity.

AbilitiesExpert Occultist

Expert Magical Knowledge

Expert Surgeon: Though an expert surgeon, Strange's nerve-damaged hands prevent him from performing surgery except when supplemented by magic. However, even without magic, Strange has shown himself capable of providing reasonable guidance to other less skilled, yet unmaimed surgeons through intense effort and strain. Strange is still capable of serving as a consultant.

Skilled Martial Artist Dr. Strange is a skilled athlete and was trained in the martial arts used by Tibetan monks in Kamar Taj.

This is the 64th article in my Know Your CBM Character series. Any requests and suggestions for an article for this series write it down in the comment section BELOW.

Build up your GEEKCREDS by answering this:

Message to the CBM community:To those who are making requests, check first [here] because I might have done an article on the character already. If I have not please be patient, I will get on it as soon as possible (but consider the fact that I spend hours writing one of these articles). Try to limit your request to characters that already have been adapted to live media, so that the feature will at least be relevant to the site – Comic Book Movie(though I include TV characters). Characters in Manga or Anime’, I am not particularly familiar of, I am not discounting these characters but it will probably take some time before I write a feature on them because I have to read up on these characters. Thank you for reading these articles! If there are errors on the feature article above, blame it on my age, humanity and ignorance. Just be sure to check the comment section for the corrections, any error I made will surely be pointed out and corrected by much bigger geeks (because there will always be a bigger geek out there). -This has been PollMaster inviting you to the geekside. I know its not really Dr. Strange, but wasn't the eye of Agamotto in the vault in Thor?
I thought it looked pretty damn cool. Of course my wife looked at me like I was an idiot when I pointed it out.

God the illuminati costume is sick. I just hope that when this movie comes around, they have people as talented as those who worked on Thor to help adapt the insano-Kirby world and the ideas of how magic works in the Marvel universe into something as good and true to its roots as Thor.

At first I was going to be a little disappointed thinking when has Dr. Strange ever been brought to live action, but you proved to be a master, pollmaster. You do a great job with your research into obscurity. Not being big on the Sorcerer Supreme I learned a lot from your article. Keep up the good work, pollmaster.

And my choice to play Dr. Strange in a live action movie...Patrick Dempsey. We already know he can play the doctor part well and he has the hair for it.

Another great magic using character. Even though the following is not part of Marvel (or DC) continuity, but I really liked the Doctor StrangeFate character in the short lived Amalgam comics as well.
