Who is COMMISSIONER GORDON? Commissioner James Worthington "Jim" Gordon, Senior is a DC Comics character; he is a trusted friend an ally of Batman. The character first appeared in Detective Comics #27 (May 1939), and was created by Bill Finger and Bob Kane. Gordon made his debut in the first panel of this comic, making him the first Batman supporting character to be introduced.
First Appearance James Gordon is the Police Commissioner of Batman's home of Gotham City. He shares the hero’s deep commitment to ridding the dark and corrupt city of crime. Gordon is somewhat skeptical of Batman's vigilante method but recognizes the necessity of Batman and the two have a mutual respect.
Gordon was a police detective when he first met the Dark Knight vigilante. He just relocated from Chicago to Gotham City, where he finds himself in a corrupt precinct. The only ally he found was the Batman to help him fight crime in the streets and alleys of Gotham.
James Gordon was the one implemented the Bat-Signal as a means to contact Batman and to frighten criminals.
In the following years, Gordon quickly rises to the rank of Commissioner after he and Batman weed out corruption within the department.
After the death of his brother and sister-in-law, he adopts his niece, Barbara, who would later become the costumed crime fighter Batgirl.
Years later COMMISSIONER GORDON, will tell Barbara that he knew that she was Batgirl, and that he was proud of her.
Gordon would eventually retire from the police force after having served for more than 20 years. He remains in Gotham, and occasionally enjoys nighttime visits from Batman.
Retired but has not lost his edge Recently Gordon has returned to the role of Commissioner. He reinstated the Bat-Signal, and carries a mobile Batphone that the Dark Knight gave him.
ANIMATED APPEARANCE/S The Batman/Superman Hour Commissioner Gordon appeared in The Batman/Superman Hour he was voiced by actor Ted Knight.
The New Adventures of Batman The 1977 cartoon series The New Adventures of Batman also has an appearance of COMMISSIONER GORDON and was voiced by Lennie Weinrib.
Super Friends COMMISSIONER GORDON makes a couple of appearances in the animated series Super Friends.
DC Animated Universe He is a regular recurring character in Batman the Animated Series, and has several appearances in Batman Beyond and Static Shock.
The Batman In the animated series The Batman, James Gordon is voiced by Mitch Pileggi. He is depicted as a newly appointed Gotham City Police Commissioner.
Batman: Brave and the Bold COMMISSIONER GORDON also appeared in the kid-centric Batman: The Brave and the Bold animated series.
Batman: Under the Red Hood In the DC Animated Feature, Justice League: The New Frontier, Gordon makes a quick cameo appearance in the interrogation scene with King Faraday and Martian Manhunter.
Batman: Gotham Knight Gordon as he appeared in Batman: Gotham Knight voiced by Jim Meskimen.
Batman: Under the Red Hood COMMISSIONER GORDON appears in Batman: Under the Red Hood voiced by an uncredited Gary Cole.
LIVE MEDIA APPEARANCE/S LYLE TALBOT In the 1949 15-episode serials, Batman and Robin, Lyle Talbot portrayed COMMISSIONER GORDON
NEIL HAMILTON Neil Hamilton in the 1960s Batman played COMMISSIONER GORDON: The Movie, based on the 1960s TV series. He advised Batman and Robin which supervillains were at large.
PAT HINGLE In the Burton series of film, Pat Hingle played Commissioner Gordon.
GARY OLDMAN When Nolan took over the Batman movie series, he cast Gary Oldman for the role. In this series, Gordon started out as a Lieutenant, which was later promoted to Commissioner, when the Joker killed the previous commissioner.
POWERS & ABILITIESNote: Due to the nature of comicbooks being an on-going tale, the character's powers along with his appearance, is in a constant state of flux. James Gordon has no superhuman powers
Abilities
James Gordon is proficient in all aspects of criminal detective work and police procedural matters. He also has a keen instinct in regards to the political aspects of managing the Gotham City Police Department. In his youth, Gordon served in the United States military and was trained in hand-to-hand combat. By his own account, his martial prowess was honed to the point that he could defeat a Green Beret in physical combat. He is also an expert leader, having spent decades, as the leader of the world's most corrupt police force in the most dangerous city. That he has managed to not only survive, but to make Gotham PD stronger is a testament to his abilities. He has also shown remarkable strength of will and an ability to maintain his mental fortitude and sanity.
Strength level
Jim Gordon possesses the strength level of a man his age, size and weight who engages in moderate regular exercise. Over the years, Gordon's strength level has diminished with age. In his prime, Jim Gordon was very athletic with above average strength.
