EDITORIAL: "The Avengers" Criticisms

My thoughts and reactions to the criticisms that the upcoming film is getting from fans

Editorial Opinion

Now, this coming summer, we are getting three hopefully great CBMs. These are The Avengers, The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Dark Knight Rises. Now, with any anticipated CBM, fans have some criticisms here and there from things such as trailers, production art, and images. For this article, I decided to focus on the ones for The Avengers. Why? Because...

1) It's my most anticipated out of the three

2) A lot of the criticisms I particulary don't agree with

All right, let's begin:

1) Explosions

This seems to be the biggest one. People are saying things like, "this film will be nothing but meaningless explosions". Now, it may seem that way at first, and I was worried about this, but I re-analyzed the trailers, and now I'm more relaxed about it. I discovered 99% of the explosions are only from the New York invasion sequence. In other words, the explosions are from ONE PART of the whole film, the final climax. This will be what, 20-25 minutes out of a 2 hour and 15 minute film? That's not even a whole quarter of the film! The only other explosion I noticed was the scene where the SHIELD lab explodes. So, in essence, it's stupid to say that the film will be filled with explosions, when the truth is, it's clearly not. As for them being "meaningless"? Hello, remember what Joss has said in past interviews? He says all the action in this film has a point and is there to serve the story. There's not gonna be action just for the sake of it. This does make sense. I mean, come on. There's a destruction of a high-tech lab and an alien invasion. How can you not expect explosions in those situations? Do you just want the aliens to shoot or the lab to be detroyed and nothing to happen? That seems unrealistic and stupid. Anyway, this part's gone on for too long. Next point...

2) CGI

Ah yes, computer based effects. This is something recent films have quite a bit of, and is something most film fans seem to hate. But, let's think about it. For a film like The Avengers, you need CGI! Yes, it would seem cool at first to have mostly practical effects, but honestly, if you think about it, most of those would look stupid by today's standards, especially for a film like this. I mean, could you imagine using wires to make Thor's hammer or Iron Man's suit fly, or Cap's shield ricochet? It would look stupid and as bad as the shield throwing in that Cap tv movie made in the 70'! Also, you need CGI to make a faithful representation of the Hulk. I mean, he's an 8-9 ft. tall green monster. Good luck finding an actor that is that tall! Also, this film is not trying for ultra-realism like Nolan's Batman films. The reason Nolan uses mostly practical effects is because his Batman is grounded in ultra-realism, and using mostly practical effects makes sense to achieve this. With Whedon and The Avengers, he definately is not going for realism. He wants this film to feel like a comic book, so using CGI makes sense in this situation.

3) No Story or Plot

All right, I find this critique to be really dumb, because it shows that the people saying this know nothing about the writer/director and how he makes his work. You know what Joss always concentrates on whenever he makes something? Story and character development! Everything else is second fiddle to him. On top of that, he knows how to write a damn good story and dialogue! Like I said before, Joss has said that the story of this film was most important to him in the process of its development, and the action is there to serve the story. The man knows what he is doing and knows what he is talking about! Now you're gonna ask, "but if that's true, how come we haven't seen that in the trailers?". Well, first of all, they probably don't want to give the whole story away in the previews. Secondly, the type of action shown in the trailer is something that general audiences enjoy, and will most likely fill seats because of this. It's actual smart marketing if you think about it. I like this because it tells me that Marvel has learned from their past marketing mistakes. Seriously, I felt like I already knew everything that was going to happen when I saw Thor.

4) Iron Man Focus

Some people are saying this film will be "Iron Man and Friends" or "Iron Man 2.5". Well, if you read past articles, you'll see this is not true. Both Joss and RDJ have said that they originally were going to have Iron Man at the focus, but in the end, this was dropped. You know why? Because it didn't work for this film! So, Joss switched it to Cap's POV, which they thought worked better. Recently, Joss has said that this is PROBABLY not true anymore because of the edits he made. Some didn't like this, but I think it is better. Why? Because this is supposed to be an ensemble film and was written as so! Therefore, everyone should be the main focus, not just one character. Knowing Joss, his script should reflect this because he is know for writing excellent ensemble pieces. Just look at Serenity! One other point is that some are saying that Joss cut things to make Iron Man the focus. This is just silly because, like I said before, this was written as an ensemble piece. You can't just change the script to one character's focus in the editing room. You would need to shoot all new footage for that.

5) Cap's helmet

Alright, this one, I agreed with most people on at first. In the set photos and the like, I wasn't so sure about the look of Cap's helmet and wished they went with the cowl. But, we have gotten stills from the film and clips from it. In those, I think the helmet looks great! Especially in motion! I feel my fears were put to rest with this!

In conclusion, these are my reactions to and thoughts on the film's criticisms. I feel like most of these will not be thought of once the film is out and everyone has seen it. Thank you for reading and good luck to The Avengers and all other CBMs coming out this year!

By the way, I am considering doing criticism articles for TASM and TDKR too! If you think I should, I will!

I think you should, definitely, do an article on TASM. It is probably getting the most unfair criticism hurled at it. Interesting read by the way !

well,I think these aren't necessarily "valid" criticisms, some people just like to bitch about anything, specially the snob-ish kind of people. you know, the kind of people who claims to be really smart and deep, but in reality are just pretentious douchebags :P

anyway,good editorial.

All I'm saying is TDKR will be better. Better as in- I'll probably like it more and it will be well received by others as well. But with The Avengers promotion in full swing- I have to admit that I am beyond excited for an epic superhero flick.

@rockerdude22 Good article. Truly. You analyzed the explosions part very well. If you do one on TASM, concentrate on the 'emo' accusations, I think some people are saying that just to find something to female dog about.

@NOLANITE I'd like to see you have a positive comment about the Avengers. READ THE F--KING ARTICLE. He said he is looking forward to TDKR, but Avengers MORE. Your idiotic comments truly amaze me.

You realize that no one here respects you, right? Why don't you grow up and realize that BOTH MOVIES MIGHT BE GOOD? Five-hundred years ago, the best scientists in the world agreed that the earth was flat. A hundred years ago, the best scientists agreed we'd never land on the moon. Fifty years ago, the best scientists agreed that the atom was the smallest particle in existence. Ten years ago, everyone agreed that we'd never see two super-heroes in the same film. Are you so arrogant to think that Avengers might, just maybe, do good too?

I Nolanite calls The Avengers a clown show but shit...look at Bane, look at Batman, look at Catwoman. I mean really every super hero is going to look like a clown so wtf. I havent seen anyone so...idk...hateful
Altair
Altair - 3/21/2012, 5:59 PM
@Comix Agreed. Cap's costume being a symbol for America is unrealistic but a dude with half his face burnt off yet he can speak and his eye is fine is realistic? Please. If you're watching COMIC BOOK movies for realism, you really don't understand the game.

That's nothing against Nolan, his films are AMAZING, but definitely not "real".

Why do these criticisms bother you so?

I've literally given up on all critics and reviews based on what happened with "John Carter". A movie a dozen times more exciting than Indiana Jones (minus the theme, of course) and critics dub it a failure. The masses believe what these critics say to be true and so they miss out on a generally fantastic movie.

If they can slam a film for all the superficial reasons they slammed John Carter, then they're capable of doing the same to "the Avengers" - the Comic Book Movie game-changer.

So long as YOU (and everyone else) allow the criticisms to mean something to you, then they will carry their weight. Me, I've learned to ignore it.

Altair, Dude, don't feed the trolls. Nolanite is a useless sac and he knows it. My money says he is another user on this site who made that account just to stir up shit. The dude gives a bad name to those he represents and you'd do much better to simply not acknowledge his worthless, wasteful existence.

@Altair

"Ten years ago, everyone agreed that we'd never see two super-heroes in the same film"

Ahem. The Incredible Hulk Returns, The Trial of the Incredible Hulk - Hulk and Thor, Hulk and Daredevil just saying.

With regards to comic book movies and realism, the characters determine the tone in my opinion. When people talk about Nolans films being realistic they mean its grounded, Jason Bourne and Rambo aren't realistic but they are grounded in a familiar world. It's easier to buy into things that look plausible which is why Hulk wasnt created by a bomb, Thor is transdimentional and Starks armors have so many flaps and vents to enable flight, and why alien wildlife in movies tends to resemble earth creatures.

Nice article, at the end of the day the movie will have to stand for itself, remember the pro Green Lantern and anti First Class theme last year.

Good article, and regardin' the CGI in the movie.... there is several videos on youtube that shows the movie bein' filmed in Ohio, and there is actually alotta explosions that were done old school and not CGI. Watch the first trailer and you'll notice the cars explodin', but no aliens flyin' 'round. That's 'cause the CGI hadn't been added yet.
Lookin' forward to May 4th, til then... Make Mine Marvel!!

@EsseXFactor Thanks man, he was just really pissing me off. He acts like he's better than everyone. I'm all for some healthy argument, but Nolanite is going too far. If I say I didn't like The Dark Knight(even though I did), that's my opinion. If I said, "TDK sucked balls! Marvel rules all! DC sucks!", that's directly insulting the company and their fan base.
Altair

@breakUBatman

All too true. That's how I want my super-hero movies: not realistic, but with realistic characters. Notice Thor and Green Lantern were both the same level of "realistic" but Thor had more realistic characters than Green Lantern, and GL bombed AND was panned.

If I had to choose between Marvel or DC's movies, I'd pick Marvel. Even though they're not perfect, have some plot holes, aren't genius, and don't have all these awards, they're the characters I grew up with. If I went right now and popped TDK or BB into the DVD player, they'd be great, but not the COMICS experience I want. I rewatched Thor yesterday for the first time in months. It made my day because THAT'S the Thor I read about as a kid. And I get to see him with Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Nick Fury, Agent Coulson, Maria Hill, Loki, Hulk, and Loki's army, WHO WE STILL DON'T KNOW THE IDENTITY OF. I love the age we live, I really do.

@Altair Well said. I agree with your assessment. I love Nolan's Batman films as much as anyone on here and am greatly looking forward to TDKR, but the thing is, they just don't feel like CBMs to me. They take themselves way too seriously, and to a point where they don't feel like CBMs anymore. To me, a CBM should make you feel like you're watching a comic book and the characters they have in them come to life on the screen. They should have a fun and adventurious feeling, but not be over the top silly. If they did that, we would get crap like Batman and Robin. That's why I love the Marvel movies more than most other CBMs out there. They have the right amount of fun and seriousness to them, without going overboard on either side. They actually feel like the characters and books are coming to life before your eyes. I'm sorry, but I just don't get that same feeling when watching Nolan's Batman. I consider those great films in general, just not true CBMs. Just my opinion, though. We can all agree to disagree.

Really great article fella. I really genuinely love Nolan's Batman movies. But I love them like I love the godfather or heat. The marvel movies turn me into kid again. I find myself silently giggling and punching the air(in my mind) whenever I watch Thor or cap or hulk, not to mention iron man. These films to me are the modern versions of the Indiana Jones films or the original star wars trilogy. And I think my kids love them like I loved the first 2 Superman films when I was their age. And as a father that's great to see. They've even been raiding my marvel comics collection. We are all going on 27 April and we intend to enjoy ourselves. We can't really do that with Dkr.

but then again, I do love Nolan and his batman movies, so I hope it is good.

Oh my, is that so hard to believe? someone that wants BOTH movies to do good? Someone that wants to see both movies equally?

But hey, its cool if Nolanite doesn't want to see Avengers. Its all good. He's welcome to have that opinion. Its just the incessant trash talking that isn't needed.

I would just say RE the Iron Man focus, it's the same as you say with the story. Of all the Avengers, who has the highest grossing movie? Iron Man. Who is generally the best known with the general public? Iron Man. Having him front and centre in the advertising is just smart marketing, he'll probably have an equal size role to Cap and Thor in the film, in fact going by the snippets from the Avengers storybook, he seems to have less.
