Ror Revisits: Punisher: Warzone

Here is the second in my Punisher revisits. Could Lexi Alexander and Ray Stephenson improve on Jonathan Hensleigh and Thomas Jane? Click to find out...

Its been a while since my last revisit but since I decided to do The Punishers, I wanted to stick to it and wait until I finally mustered up the nerve to pop this one in the player again. Well, that time has come!

Punisher: Warzone was originally conceived as a direct sequel to 2007's Punisher, and was to have Tom Jane reprise the role. But that fell apart(apparently because he didn't like the script..big shocker there!) and the role was recast with Rome's Ray Stephenson as the ruthless vigilante. The resulting film still works as a sequel of sorts, much the way Louis Letterier's The Incredible Hulk does to Ang Lee's first movie. Frank Castle is already established as The Punisher, and is waging a one man war on crime. His latest targets are an established mob family whom he promptly wipes out at the beginning, but top enforcer Billy Russoti escapes. That is, until Frank catches up to him and shreds his face of in a glass crusher! Unfortunately as this is happening Frank also guns down an undercover cop posing as one of Billy's goons. Wracked with guilt, Frank decides to put The Punisher to rest, but when word reaches him that Billy survived and is reborn as Jigsaw(think Jack to Joker in Burton's first Batman film), Frank is forced to go to war against Jigsaw, his brother Looney Bin Jim and a whole host of disposable bad guys in order to protect the wife and child of the cop he killed, all the while evading the "Punisher Task Force".

That is literally the entire plot of this film. It doesn't get any deeper than that. There is nothing else to it. The Punisher murders people, people try to not get murdered. Now I'm sure if your a Punisher fan sitting reading this your thinking "Duh Ror, that's the whole point". Well, maybe to you it is. Maybe you like reading Punisher comics to see him kill people. Personally, I was never a fan as I said in my last review, BUT, I did enjoy Garth Ennis's run on the comic which this movie is frequently referenced as being faithful to. And that is a load of crap. Ennis delved into the nature of vigilantism and what it actually means to be as black and white a killer as Frank Castle is. There was more to it that just mayhem and murder. Here its all summed up in one line: "Who Punishes The Punisher". That's yer lot. The action/violence IS rightfully brutal, if totally over the top at times. And I have to admit to enjoying some of those scenes quite a bit. Heads are blown off, faces caved in, people blown up in mid air. Director Lexi Alexander does seem to have a decent eye for the carnage. Performance wise, Stephenson is.. adequate. In other words, he puts about as much effort into playing a stone cold emotionless character as needs be..but nothing extra. And the script(which is AWFUL, at least a 9 on the eye rollameter)) probably does him no favors. He certainly looks the part mind you. The usually reliable Dominic West is unbelievably over the top as Jigsaw..but not in a good way. Basically, he's shit. As is every single other performance on display here with the possible exception of Doug Hutchison as Looney Bin Jim who is, like Stephenson, merely adequate. You can't even blame the actors, If I had been cast in this mess I wouldn't have made any effort either. I actually found it boring. When a film features more than a dozen exploding heads is boring you know something is not right. It lurches from scene to scene, a cliche here, a mumble there, stop for Jigsaw and Jim to march down the road like muppets there. All over the place, not my cuppa tea at all.

But that being said, I am aware that many fans of The Punisher like this movie. Maybe if I was more of one, or understood the character's appeal, I would get more out of it. But I can only review movie for what it is, regardless of it's source material or who it may be aimed at. And below is what I feel to be a fair rating.

@ rormachine

good reveiw,mate.

i actually liked this more than the thomas jane one & less said about the dolph lundren one the better.

warzone had the correct origin & the violence was proper hardcore.

the only downer for me was the acting.

at least the rights are back at marvel, they should be able to pull off the punisher film we all want to see.

How is it, really?

Seriously though, I have not watched this and it is coming on Showtime or somethingorother tonight and I had planned on watching it. I haven't seen it because it had such bad reviews from fans that I didn't bother shelling out any cash to watch it. Now I'm doubting if I'll bother flipping the channel on my television to give it a chance.

This film made me cry...only because it was such an embarrassment! Jane's Punisher, while it had it's faults (*cough* Travolta *cough*) was a better flick. I'm beginning to wonder if Punisher is one of those characters that just won't translate on the screen. Or maybe, if someone decides to give a shit about the character...? Maybe that would help?

To be honest, I remember watching this movie with my little brother on DVD a couple of years ago, and for the life of me, it was so bad, I only remember one scene. This horrific eulogy during a funeral that was so badly written, we were both doubled-over with laughter.

Every other detail of the film has vanished from my mind, probably for the best. lol.

Great review @Ror!

The film was just meh... They could have done a better job. Some action scenes were good, but the rest... nothing special. Oh, best scene in the film...this one LOL:

People who like this movie are sad, When I went to the theater to see it on the first day I was the only one there and the first 10 minutes I laughed so hard about how corny it was, Bring JANE back He needs a second Chance

The Jane punisher is by far the best. This one is just okay. It's worth watching once. It has some great action sequences and some great carnage. The acting is bad and the story sux. All in all there are way worse cbms to watch. Honestly I own almost every cbm on DVD or blu Ray even if it sucked. I try to support either way.

DP @ It was okay!

I like my PUNISHER real tho, don't like him much when he's in the (superhero) Marvel Universe... just a raw urban vigilante is what he should be!

Man saying that tho, would love to see him team up with BLADE against some Vamps! : P

i'd rather have ray stevenson as the punisher his good at that pissed off hard man look.

Well, well, Ror finally dropped the hammer on this flick. Big surprise on the review there. Gee Ror, did you hate this movie or did you hate it? Come on dude, it's definitely worth more than 1.5 stars. How can you judge the acting in this movie after seeing Travolta's horrible performance in the previous one? Also, at least Jigsaw was a classic character from the comics.

I still think the best Punisher movies we will ever see are called Death Wish 1 and 2.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 10/6/2010, 5:02 PM
@Deathlok, yeah, I hated it! Travolta was hammy but he didn't completely stink up the screen. I didn't think the Jane movie was great either but it was certainly better than this tripe. Jigsaw was a classic character in the comics reduced to comedic buffoonery by West. Shouldn't that piss you of fmore?
nonstopsand
nonstopsand - 10/6/2010, 5:06 PM
I definately enjoyed Warzone better then the last Travolta fest. True, this was just glorified violence, but what was the last one? How was Jane a better Punisher then Stevenson? Stevenson did no better and atleast in this one, we saw the Punisher we wanted to see all along. To judge this movie as bad is to rate McDonalds as junk food. We all know what we are shopping for so to make assumptions that this would be anything but over the top violence is to not know what you are buying a ticket for.

I LIKED RAY'S COLD DEMEANOR and he had the look,
but I perferred Jane's take on the character
he brought a little more depth.

The movie as a whole was like walking outside
stepping in some dogdump not realizing it and
tracking IT on the rug in your home....SMELLY!!

Great review ROR! I thought that Stevenson was a great Punisher but that was about the only good thing about this movie...Dominic West and Julie Benz (both of whom I usually like) were just awful and the gore in it was far too over the top and cartoonish. Here's hoping Marvel Studios can get the character right next time because none of the other movies have so far IMO!
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 10/6/2010, 5:38 PM
DEATHLOK @ They totally DESTROYED the JIGSAW character in this and killed such a classic character off in his first screen appearance was beyond lame... same goes for MICROCHIP!

Should have OFFED that one and a half joke of a PUNISHER TASK FORCE! : P

BLADE @ LMAO buddy, thats the movie in a nut shell! : D

I like Warzone over the other punisher movies. I really enjoyed it but to each his own. Also I hate when people say "If you like this somethings wrong wit you" blah blah blah. Everybody has different opinions, thoughts, and feelings that's what makes us human. It was interesting for me to read why people didn't like this movie. Nice review Ror I respect your opinion.

superbatspiderman - 10/6/2010, 6:20 PM
This movie was extremely dumb and over the top but I thought Ray Stevenson was an amazing Punisher I like Jane better but Stevenson still did a great job he was the best part of the movie. My favorite scene other than the rocket launcher scene is the scene when Frank goes to the semetary to see his families grave that scene was actually sort of touching.
Deathlok

@ Ror, LEEE777

Hey, I'm not saying this is the greatest movie of all time, but I enjoyed it more than the first. I think the fact that it at least took place in NYC rather than Tampa Bay (wtf) made it better to watch. That's like placing Spider-Man in New Orleans. Actually, it's worse than that. More like Memphis. Anyway, yeah I was a little pissed about what happened to Micro and as far as Jigsaw was concerned, sure he could have been better, but maybe I was entertained by the toonishness of the whole movie and Jigsaw certainly fit that vibe. Guys were getting killed and blown up all over the place. Sometimes you just have to take it for what it is.

You are a brave man for watching this twice, and this comes from someone who loves bad movies. My favorite movie of all time 'Robot Jox' was way better than this.
Pokeysteve
Pokeysteve - 10/6/2010, 7:27 PM
Jeez Ror haha I expected worse, than after thinking about it there really isn't much to say about this one. Stephenson is easily the better Punisher but Jane had the more watchable movie. Jigsaw in this just totally ruined it for me. I can't believe after they shot this and watched West they like what they sore

Aside from him it was good clean fun for the whole family. I'm with Deathlok though. At least it was set in NY. Fingers crossed they get the next one right. Anyone else kind of want to see Ma Gnucci?

This was a rare film that was so terrible it actually became insanely comedic and enjoyable on a very primitive level. I went to see this in the theater and it was the best time I ever had at the movies. The whole crowd just started loving it for it's schlocky insanity.
