Joss Whedon On The Avengers: No Ultimate Hulk, Villains Will Be "Something New"

More from Total Film's comic book movie preview issue. In an interview with Joss Whedon the Avengers director reveals what version of The Hulk we will be seeing as well as dropping a little hint about the villains..

When The Hulk was conformed as being part of the lineup for The Avengers many fans assumed that he would be smashing up the place and playing a villainous role at first. Now we still don't know if that will be the case or not but one thing is for certain, anyone hoping for some Hulk related carnage on the scale we saw in Mark Millar's Ultimates is in for a disappointment.

In an interview with Total Film Whedon explains why and elaborates on exactly which Avengers team we will see in the movie..

Total Film: Are you basing The Avengers on any particular comic book series?

Whedon: No, it's an amalgam. There's some originals, some Ultimates and some characters from different runs-and hopefully some new stuff too. We're certainly not going to have Hulk killing hundreds of people. It's not as cute on film as it is in the comics.

Who are The Avengers going to be fighting?

Well we all know Loki's in the house, beyond that I'm not saying!

Will we be seeing any new villains from outside the Marvel Universe?

We're definitely going to see something new...but I'm playing this one close to the chest!

So there you have it guys, according to Whedon himself at least some villainous element in The Avengers will be something that we haven't seen in the comics before. Is it the mysterious Alien race seen battling the team on set or something else? Only time will tell.

Good. I prefer Hulk to be misunderstood, and just wanting to be left alone, rather than a rampaging cannibal monster.

@PartyHard: Wait, does Hulk eat humans in the Ultimate comics? I've never read any Ultimate material so I wouldn't know.

Don't get me wrong, the guy has written some decent material in his time whether it be graphic novels of scripts...but the guy can't direct worth a damn. 2 of his 3 shows were canceled either after a handfull of episodes of 1 season and his 1 film that he directed was straight to DVD quality and didn't make alot of money or get alot of love critically...

The producers were crazy putting him in charge of this film, I really hope I'm wrong though and he hits it out of the park...but his track record and what we've seen so far are batting against him.

Does new mean a new Marvel villain from the MU or a new made up one. Because the question said from outside the MU and he responded yes. So was he talking about the MCU or the MU (comicbooks)?

Sorry, what? I assume you mean Serenity, one of the most popular sci-fi movies of all time and was RAVED about by critics and fans alike. You really should Google that stuff before typing dude.

Ruka, Firefly was a great show..it wasn't cancelled because of the quality. I also really liked the later seasons of Buffy and I loved Angel. Ok Dollhouse was a bit of a misfire but still wasn't too bad. I get that not everyone likes his style but the man is objectively a good director. I wouldn't worry about The Avengers.

I really hope they didn't make up any new characters for the movie. I really hate when directors feel the need to put their own touch on a movie with something they came up with instead of using characters that we all know and love.

The villain will be Spike played by james Marsters...just kidding. Good news about the Hulk, though. My day just brightened a little.

RorMachine: I compare Firefly to the original Star Trek series. They were both largely overlooked in their original runs and gained popularity through reruns and/or word of mouth. Both have fantastic movies. Unfortunately Whedon never planned on continuing the series past Serenity. Heck, my MOM asked me if any more movies were coming out after I loaned her the series and the movie!

I think for something new he means a villain from marvel that hasn't been on the big screen.

Also hulk definitely goes crazy and has to be wrangled by the Avengers. My friend saw the storyboards for it.
