THE AVENGERS: Joss Whedon On Harry Dean Stanton's Cameo; Why He Was Chosen For His Scene With Mark Ruffalo

The director explains why he cast the legendary actor in so specific a role next to Ruffalo's Bruce Banner, and why the scene was needed in the first place. Some SPOILERS ahead..

He may have made his name in some slightly more obscure/cult movies, but fans of cinema in general should be no stranger to Harry Dean Stanton. The 86 year old actor has appeared in such classics as Alien, Cool Hand Luke, Repo Man and Paris Texas to name but a few. And now he has a small, but very cool and funny cameo in Joss Whedon's The Avengers. Stanton plays a security guard who converses with Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) after his slightly greener, angrier alter ego crashes to Earth. It's a great scene, and was originally quite a bit longer but had to be trimmed down. In an interview with Badass Digest Whedon explains why this little one on one was necessary for the character of Bruce Banner, and why Stanton was the perfect man for the job..

I needed to get Banner from the horror of what he had done and almost killing Scarlett - or Natasha, I should say - in to, you know, a place where he was prepared to go back into that [Hulk] state. He needs somebody who will just accept him.

It turns out Whedon was able to cast Stanton through his director of photography on The Avengers Seamus McGarvey, who had been shooting the actor as a subject for a documentary..

I sort of got him stuck in my head and I was like who is more accepting than Harry Dean Stanton? And, so I got to write this weird little scene - which when I wrote it was not little, it was about 12 pages long. I was like oh, this is great, Banner falls into a Coen Brothers movie! The fact that they even let me keep that concept and that we actually landed Harry Dean to play it was very exciting.

But the idea was to put [Banner] in a slightly surreal situation with somebody who clearly had no problem with [The Hulk], just to make that little transition without milking it too much. And besides, to work with Harry Dean and to quiz him about Alien and The Missouri Breaks? What a privilege.

The scene in question was actually a highlight for me (in a movie full of them), and I would have loved to see it play out a little longer as was originally written. Hopefully we will see it in its entirety at some point in the future.

I love how Dean Stanton asks if he's an Alien. He's even wearing a similar baseball cap to Brett.

I'm sorry, but I finally got a chance to watch the Avengers last night...and no, it is NOT a movie that is even close to touching the Dark Knight...its a great movie, but I almost fell asleep during the first 10 minutes and did fall asleep 25 minutes in...luckily I woke up in time to see Thor get all pissed off...and see the team assembled.

Again, good...not a TDK killer though, by any means.

And I will admit though, Ruffalo was my favorite...Scarlett was probably the best (underrated)actress..."I'm interrogating these guys right now" as she's the one tied up, "hold on Director, let me put them on hold." Yea!

Eh...maybe I'm being harsh about it...it's early...and I had just left a bar when I sat down to watch the movie...so it could have been the vodka...but from what I saw, it was good, but it had just enough "cheese" in it to take it out of the running as something that could beat out TDK.

Yeah this cameo threw me when watching the film. It was an ok film but it wasn't as good as Iron Man.

Great scene, loved it.

I want to check the director commentary on the DVD / Blu-ray.

I recommend the previous movies' comments, BTW.

@remindkevin - you slept on the movie, I don't think your opinion would be the best to take in account, I guess.

Should re-watch it with a fresh mind, maybe you wanted to not like it, so you slept. It happened to me when I watched the last Pirates of the Caribbean.

remindkevin, I hate when people who fall asleep during movies try to pass off their opinion. You remind me of a dear friend, and this is my only peeve about an otherwise great guy. Sleep through half a movie then tell people it sucked. And I'll tell you like I tell him, your opinion means dick when you can't be bothered to even stay awake.

@DE4DP00L I'm not a Nolanite...I think Iron Man and TDK are my two favorite...what are you talking about? My review is realistic fun vs. action fun...I like reality and I like action, one is emotional and one is mindless...I like both though...I'm speaking to claims that it is better than TDK and I'm sorry, it doesn't tug the heart strings in the same way dude.

@DE4DPOOL, as much as it also annoys me that people compare comic book movies against each other, they were just voicing their opinions and not banging the same drum about being nolanites and hating marvel, so youre reply makes you look like a complete [email protected] dont understand how you can like comics but hate either marvel or DC, its crazy....plus DE4DPOOL one of the comments clearly states that he preffered Iron Man to Avengers...what connection did Nolan have with Iron Man...jeez this Nolanite thing is mad, I like Pulp Fiction does that make me a Tarantinite, GROW UP

You could bet your azz I wouldn't have fell asleep during TDK....but again, I will give BenRielly some credit for picking it up early on in the convo, I didn't see it theatres...so...maybe that's something too.

@ ScRipt69... Well said. All this Nolanite, DC vs. Marvel crap is getting old. I'm a life long Batman fan and love Nolan's movies. That said, The Avengers is an awesome movie. Acting, humor, action, emotion, you name it it had it. Can't wait to see it again tomorrow!

@script69 - Thanks for that. Much appreciated.

@DE4DP00L - I don't remember saying anything about Batman in my post I simply said I thought Iron Man was a better film IN MY OPINION, if anyone wan't to discuss why I thought the film was lacking I'd be happy to.

@iLoveMarvelAndD - I have to agree, I think Ruffalo wasn't doing much of anything with the role. At least Norton looked like a Banner who was on the run and not a Banner who was hiding out in a Mcdonalds :)

LOL the same battle as ever, TDK is not a super hero movie, it's just a thriller with costumes, The avengers GOT actually brain, but it's not a roman polanski movie, because it's not supposed to be like that! it's action, humor, and drama (yes, it has drama, and when you'll see you wouldn't deny it) I liked Batman Begins because it was a real superhero movie, with TDK, and probably TDKR, batman became so realistic that now isn't anymore a fantasy character, i think that the good of a superhero CHARACTER is that it is realistic, but belonging to a fantasy world, like iron man, thor and so on. sadly nolan gave something more to batman, but even something less, the opinion on this it's personal all the way, you can like it or not, but i think that TRUE comics fan are more satisfied with the marvel movies, because they put the emotion from the comics on the silver screen, instead nolan tries to do the reverse thing, and denaurates batman and his related characters, making them too much realistic for a superhero story IMHO and putting in the movie too much "fake brain" because, in dark knight, it's too easy to make joker mess the city just "because of chaos" without giving him some reason, the avengers got reasons, for every character, they do things because of something they think, they always think, and for me, this is brain in a movie, i don't want to "hate" nolan's batman, i liked BB but i just can't like TDK, it's too much "bully" and like Captain America said:"I don't like bullies" ;)

I agree, Edward Norton's Banner was the F'n man! But Ruffalo brought it in differently, and it works...I was happy with it, even though I really didn't want to be...when I heard about Norton not returning because of money issues I was thinking "pay him what he wants dude, guy is a legend." First rule of Hulk club, don't talk about the F i z u k i n g HULK CLUB!

This man is just plain awesome! My favorite performance of his was in Steven Segal's FIRE DOWN BELOW. He was just brilliant in it and so was Stephen Lang and Kris Kristofferson for that matter. Such an underrated movie.

Why would you even watch a movie when your tired and sleepy. Obviously you will fall asleep. Has nothing to do with the movie at all.

At least no matter how evil Loki gets, there is a slight part of him that you still like and understand if the Asgardians forgive him. The character has heart. All Marvel characters have heart, emotion, brains. They are all fully developed characters. Whereas someone like Harvey Dent to go from this White Knight to someone who kills just because he was scarred and was given a gun by the same person who scarred him. The Joker is just too crazy and although I loved how Heath Ledger played him, just came across as too real and had no sense of the comics. The best Joker has to be Mark Hamill's version

@SmellofDuty - Sir people like yourself give me hope for this site.

@elessarundomiel2382 - Right. So we're not talking about Avengers anymore? We're just gonna go straight back into the whole DC is worse than Marvel thing?

@remindkevin - I do hope Marvel give Ruffalo a Hulk film, he is a good actor, I just think he sleepwalked through the Avengers.

Ironman53- My favorite Segal flick hands down... which isn't really hard to grasp given his extensive shit résumé. Everybody in FDB pulled off a great performance and as simple as it was, the plot was thrilling for a change. IMHO, there wasn't a Segal film worth watching after it. Hell, we hadn't gotten a worthy Segal flick since the first Under Siege. Harry Dean Stanton gave FDB so much friggin heart, the man's a master!
