James Cameron Comments On The Success Of THE AVENGERS

As of now, only two movies have made $2 billion at the box office, and both are James Cameron flicks - something the director is only too happy to point out when he discusses how close The Avengers came to joining Avatar and Titanic with MTV..

Obviously Marvel's The Avengers was a beast at the box office, having now made an incredible $1.5 billion worldwide. But, it doesn't seem very likely (at least not without another re-release) that it will join the "King of the world's" two major money-spinners in that elusive $2 billion club. In a recent interview with MTV, James Cameron had a bit of fun with the fact that the Marvel movie just fell short of the mark..

"They got close. They didn't break the $2 billion-dollar barrier, there's only two in the club. But you know, come on, let's go guys. Look, I want Hollywood to be as successful and vibrant as it always has. Hopefully a movie will come along next year and show everyone what's possible because that just benefits us all. On the other hand, if that shouldn't happen for another ten years that would be good too. ... It's kind of a no-lose situation. We managed to push Titanic right over the $2 billion mark with the re-release, so I'm happy about that."

But what did Cameron actually think of The Avengers as a movie, putting aside how much it did or did not gross? - "Oh I liked 'Avengers.' I thought it was a real crowd-pleaser, lots of fun [and] funny, funnier than [I expected]. I thought leavening it was important because 'Titanic' is not exactly a laugh riot.". The Avengers would have had to lower its standards if it wanted to be in the 2 Billion Dollar Club. Just look at its current membership: Blue Pocahontas aka Dances with Smurfs and Profiting off of a Real Life Tragedy with a Fake Love Story starring Kate Winslet's PG-13 approved boobs.

The Avengers may not be the best film ever, but it was certainly better than Titanic and that piece of shit Avatar.

And if they would re-release the Avengers into theaters in a year or so, it would top the 2 bil. mark as well.

Avatar only made the money it did because when it was released, there was a mass of power outages in the U.S. and n one had anything to do, all there was TO do was make babies or sit through Avatar.

Titanic, Hell if I know how it made that much money, sure it was good and all, but I can never see myself sitting through it again (Much like Avatar).

Avengers made the money it did because it was great, new, fresh, exciting, and it had 0% Competition.

TDKR made the money it collected because it had a huge following, that is the only reason.

TDK, everyone was talking about it, so people went to go see it.

I'd like to point out, that I have seen Avengers 216 times, and I am not hesitant not to see it 216 more times. It's colorful, addicting, hilarious, and eccentric.

But I'm in no way defending Avengers or dissing Cameron, but Cameron is riding off his 2 big films, what about all his other movies.

For example, if Christopher Nolan never made TDK, he would not be recognized by hardly any of us. Same with Joss and Avengers.

Avatar was plagiarized from Time Spirits, Halo, and Pocahontas, Just sayin'.

At least TDKR and Avengers broke the big 1 Bil. Re-assuring us we will see MANY more CBM's to come, and many that are being made currently. Meanwhile Cameron is masturbating to his thoughts on Avatar 4... Again, Just saying.

Titanic made money for two reasons. Teen-aged girls saw it over and over and over and people wanted to see the last 11 minutes when the ship went down.

@TheGambitFreak I agree with a lot of what you said except the part that if Christopher Nolan didn't make the Batman movies and if Joss Whedon didn't make Avengers half of the people on here wouldn't know who they were.

I would like to point out that the Batman movies were the worst movies Christopher Nolan made. With Inception, Memento, & The Prestige as his other movie credits I am pretty sure people would know who he is. Hell those are three of my favorite movies.

As far as Joss goes lets keep in mind he developed Buffy The Vampire Slayer, wrote Toy Story, wrote Alien Resurrection, developed Angel, developed Firefly & the movie spin-off Serenity, wrote Astonishing X-Men, and brought us the greatness that is Dr Horribles Sing-Along
Blog. Suffice to say, people knew who he was too.

I don't understand people making excuses for the amount of money Avatar and Titanic made.

Same reasoning can be applied to heck, TDK and Avengers

And the irony is, a lot of the insults of Avatar, are kinda problems Avengers had too

I still say Marvel had a minor FAIL by not only promoting The Avengers Labor Day Re-release two weeks in advance or givin us a L'IL 'sunt'in sunt'in' extra. Only friggin' 40mil short of Titanic domestic?? ARRRGH!!
