COMICS: WWE Champ CM Punk To Pen Intro To AvX Hardcover Collection

Outspoken WWE champion and longtime comic book fan Phil Brooks - better known by his in-ring persona CM Punk - is set to write the foreward for Marvel's upcoming hardcover edition of the recent Avengers VS X-Men event. Read on for quotes from Punk and Marvel EIC Axel Alonso..

Many pro-wrestlers seem to enjoy a good comic book (check out our interview with "Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels here), but few have been more vocal in their love and support of the industry than current WWE champion CM Punk. Although the wrestler feels he has more in common with a certain metal mask wearing super-villain than any of the characters he will be writing about - "He's a bad guy but he's justified in his actions. He's one of those characters that to me can be misunderstood a lot. There's a lot of parallels between myself and Doctor Doom." - he is set to write an intro for the November 7th release of the Avengers VS X-Men hardcover collection.

Says Punk of the opportunity..

"I worked really hard to get to where I'm at and it's cool to be afforded opportunities like this. To me, it's hard work paying off and I'm having a lot of fun right now. There's good and there's bad, but if you don't stop to smell the roses, so to speak, it's all for naught. If I had to describe my writing style, it's very sarcastic and self-deprecating. You'll be able to tell it in the foreword."

One man who certainly sounds happy to have Punk on board is Marvel Editor In Chief Axel Alonso - "Who understands the theatrical nuances of a good smack down more than WWE champ CM Punk, who brings the same muscle and heart he beings to the ring to his brilliant intro for Avengers vs. X-Men.". But while an intro is all well and good, could we see Punk pen an actual comic book someday? "We've kicked around a couple of ideas. You might see something like that in the future." teases the champ.

For the entire interview, which includes quotes from Punk on the comics industry, his former hatred of Captain America, how Garth Ennis' Preacher got him back into comics and much more, click the link back to USA Today below.

MORE POPULISTS! EXCELLENT! Next Hickman will be asked to include a scene where Tony, Steve, and Clint drink Pepsi at a NASCAR event.

Punk pitched writing a Thing book called Clobberin' Time with Jill Thompson doing the art through his Twitter account some months ago which got Alonso's attention.

that's awesome because when i think of quality storytelling and insight into what the writers and artists of AvX were thinking - i almost always wonder instead what a pro wrestler might add to the conversation.

Pro wrestling is so lame. In a world where there's MMA and real grappling specific arts (judo, BJJ, amateur wrestling) I don't know why people still watch fake wrestling. It's like watching fake hockey or fake football.

pud333, when you watch a movie or a tv show do you get annoyed because you know it's not real and they are only acting? Every wrestling fan is perfectly well aware that it's not a "real sport", that's not why we watch. We watch for the entertainment value, the athleticism, the characters and the - admittedly pretty ridiculous at times - storylines. There is also a very real element to the backstage politics, and what determines a specific wrestler being pushed or held back. Non-fans will never understand so I don't even know why I'm bothering trying to explain. Let's just say different strokes for different folks and leave it at that.

this guy always seemed douchey to me. i admit i have no idea who the man is and loved when he made that youtube video calling out chris brown.

but for some reason people who shove their straight-edgeness in others' faces really bother me. we get it, and i guess it's good for kids, you're straight edge, but you still resort to violence to solve your problems so how great of a role model are you?

i have more respect for the guy who can have a drink or two and kick back responsibly.

@RORMACHine nail on head. Also, Punk's relevance in this issue is that he's an OUTSPOKEN mainstream comic nerd, who stops and shouts, "It's Clobberin' Time" on his way to the ring for every match. Kind of like when Kevin Smith wrote the intro to Preacher BEFORE ever venturing into comics. For those not in the know, I like rasslin' cause its like watching a 5 hour comic book every week (comics aren't real either).

the straight edge thing is supposed to bother you, he's a "bad guy" who gets negative attention by gloating about his moral superiority. So that's just him doing his job, well. He can also do awesome stuff like balance on the actual ring ropes, jump off and do a variation of cool stuff. He also often jumps from the inside of the ring to the out over ridiculous distances. Just like comics, 90% of rasslin' sucks, but the 10% that is great makes it all worthwhile.

CM Punk is an intelligent guy. Pro wrestling and comics are similar in a lot of ways, and there is considerable overlap in their fanbases (yes, rednecks read comics and geeks watch wrestling). Both treat female characters as primarily T & A material. The WWE is pretty much one big Jeph Loeb comic, but Punk elevates the quality of his material.

Pro-wrestling is [frick]ing FUN to watch. All those crazy stories, costumes and those awesome moves make it fun to watch.
MMA is BORING because it's real. there's so much they can't do and nobody has any flair or finesse. Also, even though it's supposed to be MIXED martial arts, everybody just does Muay Thai all the time...which means they keep circling each other trying to kick but end up with their balls wrapped around some other dudes head. [frick] MMA!
