The Avenger's Line Up

A theory concerning the limited roster.
I've sifted through many angry comments about the limitations placed on the Avengers roster and this is my reasoning: it's for the better. Pure and simple.

Ant man and Wasp simply don't fit into the movie. I mean, which would you rather: a movie full of their development with a lame villain haphazardly thrown in, or a well developed plot that mixes the growing relations between already established heroes with the development of an interesting and credible opponent

You have to choose. You can't have both. This a movie, not a comic. There simply isn't time to develop fully two new heroes AND a villain in under three hours. Either Giant Man and Wasp would be under-developed and misused, or the villain would make no sense.

Which would you rather: a mediocre movie with all your favorite heroes, but with some of them misused and done poorly; or a great movie only without a few minor heroes?

I think the choice is clear. I mean outside of the ultimate universe, name one instance where Giant Man and Wasp REALLY contributed anything astonishing? They're flat characters. If they were in the movie they would be like their ultimate counterparts.

It was pointed out that without them we wouldn't have Ultron, who is decidedly one of the Avengers most important enemies. However, this cannot be achieved in a single movie, and certainly not in the first Avengers movie. Do you want to see superfluous scenes where Giant Man is working on his artificial intelligence program? Sure it'd be an interesting tidbit, but would it forward the Avengers storyline? No. Such a thing would be better off in a Giant Man/Ant Man movie. It would work there because the movie would be focus on him.

The Avengers is a team movie. As such, it has to be about the team, not so much the individual members. It's sad that the Wasp and Ant Man won't be part of the first foray. They are not established characters (to the general public.) You would have to devote a significant amount of time to them, time the director doesn't have. A 30 second intro isn't enough for these characters, as they are not as well known as the zhulk or the X-Men. Those short intros work because everyone knows them already. If I asked a room full of comic outsiders to identify the characters in a picture of the Avenger's: do you think any would name Giant Man and Wasp? Furthermore if they could, would they know anything about who they are and how they got their powers? The answer: no.

If you still think a 30 second intro of an unknown character can work, I point to exhibit A: Wolverine origins. How did everyone enjoy the non existent character development in that movie? That is an example of how a team movie can go wrong. Do you want the Avengers to suffer the fate of Wolverine, or do you want a well developed plot and interesting character development?

Choose wisely.

I know this is a controversial topic. I look forward to the exchange of ideas.

LOKI AND HULK ARE ALREADY ESTABLISHED THEY SHOULD BE THE VILLIANS. THEY ARE ALREADY KINDA EXPLAINED. WHILE STILL BEING ABLE TO INTRODUCE PYM AND THE WASP WITH NO WORRIES OF RUINING THEIR CHARACTERS OR ORIGINS
dellamorte1872 - 7/28/2009, 5:34 PM
I agree with dellamortel whoever the villian may be they will be established from another movie IM2 Thor Cap or whatever I think they can still develop antman and wasp and due them justice

Maybe you guys are right, perhaps an established villain could help. But I'm still unsure, team movies are just difficult to pull off, I think it would be better off to start small and work others in later. I'm not saying no ant man ever, I just think he and his wife should be later additions.
thwhtGuardian - 7/28/2009, 8:09 PM
I say if they are going to be in a movie they should be added in the second movie, cause frankly they arent cool enough. After audiences seeing Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and Hulk, Giant man and wasp kinda fall short. Besides building Ultron i dont see a reason to put Pym or his wife in the live action adaptaion at all.

OK... I DISSAGREE WITH BOTH OF U... MY REASONS ARE SIMPLE. GIANT MAN IS AN ORIGINAL MEMBER OF THE AVENGERS. HES BEEN THERE FROM THE BEGINING PERIOD. WHY NOT INTRODUCE PYM IN THE THOR MOVIE. I MEAN THE ONLY ONE THAT SHOULD BE SACRIFICED SHOULD BE THE WASP HISTORICALLY SHES BEEN 1 ANNOYING BITCH LOL. WHATS GREAT ABOUT HIM IS THAT HES EXPENDABLE HE CAN BUILD ULTRON THEN SACRIFICE HIS LIFE DESTROYING HIM :) MAKE MS VAN DYNE A LUV INTEREST. SO SOMEONE CAN SOB OVER HIS DEAD BROKEN BODY. HULK WILL GO SAVAGE AFTER DESTROYING ULTRON, THEN HAVE THE LONG AWAITED AVENGERS VS HULK BATLE. AFTER SEEIN WATCHMAN THE FX FOR DR. MANHATTEN GROWING 9 STORIES TALL LOOKED KINDA COOL ITLL WORK THE SAME FOR GIANT MAN
10THTIGER - 7/28/2009, 11:44 PM
are they gonna call him ant man, or giant man, i like to call him dush man
thedarkknight666 - 7/29/2009, 1:58 AM
I agree keep it simple....yes Pym is an original but they have cap who isnt.....so it balances out :)
teabag - 7/29/2009, 2:01 AM
If you look back through the comics they have an ever changing roster of 6 to 8 members, usually wrapped arround 2 or 3 of thier core members and it always works. We are already going to see War Machine and Black Widow in it and Fiege has stated that more would be introduced in the other upcoming movies.

Wasp and Giant Man (Ant Man is pretty laughable) should definitely be in the movie! I would prefer THIS...

Have to remember also that the HUlk will not be an Avenger for long. At least not an acting one.So you can sorta scratch him off the list.
Hawksblueyes - 7/29/2009, 8:10 AM
He just doesnt play well with others.
Hawksblueyes - 7/29/2009, 8:14 AM
Idk why everyone thinks Hulk isnt going to be a major member of the Avengers,at the end of TIH Bruce was controlling Hulk, that makes me think that the Hulk will be under control for the Avengers.

TheShakeBake - 7/29/2009, 9:00 AM
Banner has never controlled the Hulk for long.He ll go nuts and the Avengers will have to stop him.
Hawksblueyes - 7/29/2009, 9:25 AM
I don't think that just because he was an original member is a valid point. the Angel was an original member of the x-men...did anyone wine about his non inclusion in the first movie? No, because he doesn't really add anything to the team dynamic other than an interesting visual style:he has wings. Similarly Pym shrinks or grows, what does that really add to the team? And don't say Ultron because there is no way he's the first villain, so that's a moot point.
thwhtGuardian - 7/29/2009, 5:27 PM
You aint no fan if you dont want HANK & JAN in the original line up!!!

No one cared about ANGEL and BEAST back then for obvious reasons, 1 = it wasn't a origin movie, and 2 = ppl was just glad for any comic book movie after BATMAN & ROBIN blew it for everyone!!!
LEEE777 - 7/31/2009, 10:11 AM
WOLVERINE sucked becoz it didn't honor its true ORIGINS , this will too if it don't have the original members!!!

JOSH @ Keep preaching man!!! ; D
LEEE777 - 7/31/2009, 10:13 AM
Ive hearded a rumor that simon pegg will play ant-man.
wyatt1234 - 8/6/2009, 7:53 AM
i think Giant man could work out if you use the ultimates version personally im not a fan of the ultimates but i do like ultimate giant man but please not ultimate cap

If you have a good computer monitor and watch The Incredible Hulk on your computer and slow down (a lot) during the cove scene with Hulk and Betty in the rain, you can actually and truly Captain America standing in the bushes in the far, far distance during the pan-to-the-right after Hulk throws a boulder in the sky. In the same pan-to-the-right, you also see a black object fall from the sky from the origin point of some lightning and land in the bush far, far away. For this (THOR!!!), you don't have to zoom in, because I caught it in the THEATRES. And if you think that the blob in the distance isn't Cap, then take a picture of the RED AND BLUE AND WHITE COLOURING IN THE BLACK AND GREEN BUSHES(ComicBookMovie.com...) and play around withe lighting. You can even perfectly make out the pattern of his shield.

Anyways, this means that The Avengers are already assembled (sort of) during the Incredible Hulk story line.
