EDITORIAL: Why THANOS Will Absolutely Be The Villain In AVENGERS 3

While no one knows for sure what Marvel's future will hold, it has been made pretty clear what all of this Infinity Stone talk is leading to. Hit the jump for why Thanos will be the primary antagonist of Avengers 3.

While Thanatics--"Thanos fanatics"--desperately want him to be built up past 2018, I simply cannot bring myself to believe it. There is too much evidence to think otherwise. Several CBM users have said they want both Thanos and the Infinity Stones to be built up until Phase 6! Y'all, that's just crazy. Like the title states, it is abundantly clear that Thanos will be the villain of the third Avengers film.
Here's why.

First, we need to make an educated guess at when Avengers 3 will be released. Since Kevin Feige has gone on record as saying they want a three-year gap between Avengers films, 2018 is the likely year. Both of the previous films will have opened in May, and since that's a hot month for blockbuster releases, it's safe to say that A3 is opening on the May 4, 2018 release date.

One thing that is heavily preached in the comment section of CBM articles is that Marvel does NOT work in trilogies! And yes, that is true. They take things one movie at a time. There is only the next installment. But people are taking Feige's words far too seriously. Even he said that Loki's three appearances form a "sub-trilogy." What I'm trying to get across is that they can adapt the story-telling aspect of trilogies to their movies. Take TDK trilogy, for example. The main antagonists of the first film, the League of Shadows, return in the third, and The Dark Knight is the bridge between the two. Similarly, Thanos is the reason Loki is able to do what he does in the first one, and both Thanos and the Infinity Stones would return in A3. But at the same time, A3 would lay the foundation needed for future Marvel movies and sequels.

Guardians of the Galaxy is said to definitely be connected to Avengers 3. But what is it about this film that makes it connected? Does it just mean that we'll be getting a GOTG/Avengers team-up? No, of course not. GOTG not only established the third Infinity Stone, but also showed just how threatening Thanos really is. Let's take a look at a quote from the brilliant director, Joss Whedon himself:

"[Thanos] is so powerful he is not someone you can just try out and punch him. Like he did in the comics, you want him to be threading through the universe and to save the big finale for 'the big finally'. He is definitely a part of what I have got going on. The thing about the Avengers is that they are very powerful but not very stable. So, there will definitely be some people that will shake them up in the next installment."

As we all know by now, Thanos will not be the villain of the next installment. But as we see here, he is a part of what both Joss Whedon and James Gunn have going on. Think of the state of the Marvel world by the time A3 comes around. Whedon will have been working on the Avengers and lots of other Marvel-related projects for seven years. Marvel Studios will have been teasing Thanos for six years. Do you know how much happens in six years? A ten year old who saw the first one will be sixteen by the third. As one site pointed out, six years is more than a lot of franchises last, let alone a villain/storyline.

Something a lot of people are worried about is that there won't be enough time between now and then to establish all the Infinity Stones, especially since Thanos currently has none of them. Marvel Studios have been building the Infinity Stone storyline since 2011 (even though the Tesseract wasn't revealed to be a stone until last year, we're talking about super-powered artifacts here--even the general audience will notice a recurring plot tool). Right now, we already have 3 confirmed Infinity Stones in two phases, possibly 4. And who's to say Thanos doesn't have one Infinity Stone already? The point is, there are seven movies between now and Avengers 3. That gives Marvel plenty of time and plenty of options on what to do with the "Infinity" side of things.

Guardians of the Galaxy Connects With The Avengers 3 Is Thanos Coming To Earth?

It also gives Marvel time and options plentiful to build up Thanos and his back-story. Besides that, Whedon has to make sure that a movie with Thanos will work on its own, without the need to see any previous movies. But for the sake of helping him grow as a franchise character, there are so many opportunities to include him. As the Red Skull is likely to return in Captain America 3, they could--and probably will--tie him into Thanos' story somehow, as it was an Infinity Stone that booted him off into space. Doctor Strange will be cosmic and magical, dealing with other dimensions and realities and worlds--boom, glorified Thanos presence, ala GOTG. Thor 3, very likely as well, considering the position Loki is currently in. I personally think we'll see him go against the Guardians of the Galaxy in their sequel, albeit only briefly. An Inhumans movie has been heavily rumored and confirmed to be in development, and since a lot of that happens in space, Thanos could very well fit there. Hell, they could put him in Ant-Man if they figured out a clever enough way to do it. Like I said.. Plenty of time and plenty of options. There's plenty of room for character development between now and Avengers 3.

As for the recent rumor that Avengers 3 will be split into two films, I don't believe it for a second. It's not that I don't think it's not possible, I just don't think it's likely. The article that was the source, from The Daily Marvelite, was very poorly written, and sounded more like wishful thinking than an actual scoop. But, that's kind of irrelevant to the point of this article.

Well, there you have it. Why I am sold on Thanos being A3's villain. Feel free to bash me or commend me in the usual place!

Of course Thanos will be the villain of Avengers 3. They aren't going to push it back even further, that just creates a bigger risk of not being able to do it at all.

To quote the amazing Doctor Cox:

WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!

WRONG! WRONG! WRONG!

YOU'RE WRONG!

You know what? I am sick and tired of explaining this in the comments as I have to do about once a week now. I am going to throw up an editorial this week on how not only is there absolutely no evidence FOR this but plenty of evidence AGAINST it. Fact is that the only SOURCE for Thanos being the villain in Avengers 3 are people who do not understand pacing and foreshadowing, I.E deluded fans (most of which probably are either High School aged or do not have at LEAST a B.A, much less one in Literature or the cinema. Therefore they have NO IDEA what they are talking about when it comes to things like sub-text, themes, tone, and most importantly basic story structure. And yes, despite what your parents tell you, these things DO matter and add to your validity as an author.) Also, people swore up and down that Thanos was the villain in Age of Ultron even though the pacing would have been WAY off there too.

But again, I will get into it more later this week.

@Objectivelybiased

Dude, you can state your opinions without being a jerk. Not that you intended to be one, but that's how it came off. I don't see how it's unreasonable to speculate that Thanos will be the villain of Avengers 3, or even Avengers 2 before we knew the title. He was teased in the credits scene of the Avengers, so it would have been logically sound to assume "that guy is the next villain" as many audience members did.

I'm working on something right now that's just me making links between several of my theories and trying to come up with the most solid plot outline possible for what's to become of Thanos. And I agree with @ObjectivelyBiased. Thanos has had three scenes and only a few lines of dialogue. He needs to be built up, and built up and built up until there's no way the tension could get higher and that's when they bring him properly into play.

What will absolutely be the villain for "Avengers 3" will be "The Justice League" film.

I do believe that Thanos will be the villain of The Avengers 3. I'm sure Thanos will be built up through out Marvel's Phase 3 films in order to be set up for Avengers 3.

BatzFTWfan- i think the best villain for avengers 3 would be the kree mainly because with the inclusion of captain mar vell and carol danvers it could really open up the stars to the avengers. the avengers would know more about what's going on up there and they could then do a after credits scene with mar vell explaining his actions to the supreme intelligence and then the suprememe intelligence informing him of a new greater threat because the mad titan has an infinity stone.

@BatzFTWfan

I actually would not mind if The Masters of Evil where to be the villains of The Avengers 3 but right now all we can do is just speculate as to what "could" happen in Avengers 3.

I would like to see more of the cosmic side of the MCU with the involvement or some involvement of Thanos eg. The Inhumans, Nova, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, Howard The Duck.

People are even thinking that a Civil War adaptation could happen but i highly doubt that.

Yeah no, Objectively biased wasn't being an asshole. He was right. Most fans don't understand how to make a good movie. The Infinity Stones will be introduced by the end of Phase 3 but Thanos and the comic universe won't be developed yet. Plus following Age of Ultron which is a global technological warfare, down to earth story with a movie a massive fight in space against alien conquerors doesn't make any sense. Kang will be the villain and he will help bridge the gap. He'll also introduce the cosmic concept to the avengers because he'll probably be there to stop Thanos.
kinghulk
kinghulk - 9/28/2014, 4:36 AM
i really hope they dont use kang in avengers 3 i think the kree would fit the role better when you consider they are setting up thanos. but kang could definitely hint at what's coming if they did use him.

Dr.Doom should be an avengers villain. This is why marvel tries to get fantastic four back.

I honestly thought that Thanos being the villain in Avengers 3 was a given...but judging by some of the comments here, apparently this article was needed! Concise, logical, to-the-point...good stuff GliderMan, you've been killing it with your editorials lately!

As someone who has studied film for almost 25 years, went to school for screenwriting, and worked in the television industry...I strongly feel, based on my own interpretation of the clues, trends, etc, that Thanos will be the villain of Avengers 3, which will actually wrap up the MCU to a major degree. After that, they will follow with a soft reboot. That is my guess, and even non idiots could very well disagree.
dapug88
dapug88 - 9/28/2014, 9:26 AM
I think he'll be the main villain in avengers 3 because Downey, hemsworth, and Evans are all done with their contracts with marvel after that movie.
ruadh
ruadh - 9/28/2014, 9:41 AM
While they could always renew, I do agree with the theory that their contracts is one of the reasons the MCU will be semi-wrapped up with Avengers 3.
Minty
Minty - 9/28/2014, 2:22 PM
Agree with @ruadh - I was always under the impression Thanos would be the Big Bad and the big conclusion (of this storyline at least) would be Avengers 3 due to contracts. Thanos has got four years and seven movies (well, probably three/four cosmic movies) to be properly developed.

On the actual article, nice work @GliderMan - it's a beaut.

Okay except Thanos predates Apocalypse by 13 years first appearing in Iron Man #55 in 1973 and Apocalypse didn't appear until X-Factor #5 in 1986. Top that off with Thanos just overall being a better villain and has done far more then Apocalypse has ever done. So besides all that then ya Thanos is totally an Apocalypse wanna be.
Ocelot
Ocelot - 9/28/2014, 4:29 PM
Thanos seems more intertwined with The Guardians of the Galaxy than he does with The Avengers. The character has had nothing to do with any of The Avengers movies in this phase and wont be in The Avengers 2 or have anything relevant to do with it's plot. They've done a crap job of building up this apparent big bad. The Avengers franchise looks like it's heading to some sort of civil war story.

You could ponder that:
Thanos finds a gem in the post credit of AOU
The Infinity Gauntlet will be taken in Thor 3 along with the tesseract from the vault.
GOTG2 deals with stone #4 (or 5 depending on what you believe was Lokis' staff)
INHUMANS/Doctor Strange #5
(Movie you want made) #6

I also believe that with CURRENT contracts running out at the conclusion of A3 that we will see Thaonas as the main Villain played out.

Avengers 3 villain could be the kree (introduction of ms. marvel) or the skrull invasion would be cool (skrull rights owned by another studio?)
