What about The Punisher?? Will Frank Castle show up in the MCU anytime soon....

Who is The Punisher, and when will he show up in the MCU?

Filed Under: Punisher

I just wanted to write a quick article about The Punisher, a character that has yet to be done justice on the big screen.  After 3 movies, The Punisher still hasn’t truly connected with an audience.

I wanted to write about who The Punisher is, I’m sure everybody knows most of the info already, but The Punisher rocks and I’m really hoping we see him in the MCU soon, either in Daredevil, Civil War, or both.

            I think if they keep it simple and concentrate on what makes the Punisher cool, then the movie will be awesome.

1.  The Military and The “Born” story arc.

Frank Castle started out studying to become a priest.  His inability to forgive those who did evil acts, and to forgive criminals, led him to enlist as a U.S. Marine Captain.

            The “Born” storyline shows Castle in Vietnam and is told from the point of view of the soldiers in his platoon.  Castle is praised by the soldiers, most of the soldiers are terrified to be in Vietnam but Castle leads them and pushes them to fight.   Towards the end of the story, Castle has to choose between dying or letting The Punisher loose.  He chooses to live and demolishes his enemy.

When he comes back home he meets his wife at the airport and the story foreshadows the murder of his Wife and family by the mafia.

The important thing about including the “Born” story arc is that Castle was insane and was The Punisher way before his family was murdered.  He was the punisher all the way back to when he chose to fight and enlist in the military.

2.         His family was murdered because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time.  Castle was not targeted, he and his family witnessed a gangland execution by the mafia in Central Park and in return, the mafia killed Castle’s family.

            Castle Survived the Central Park massacre and tried to imprison the men that killed his family but the Police had ties to the Mafia and the killers got away.  Castle then proceeded to hunt down and kill the mafia members and bring true justice to his family.

3.         The R rated issue.  In an ideal world, the Punisher would be rated R, but I want to see Castle interact with the rest of the MCU.  I would be fine with a PG-13 rating.  I could definitely see Chad Stahelski and David Leitch, the guys who directed John Wick directing The Punisher.  They also proved with John Wick that they know how to keep costs down and still make an amazing movie.

            I would want Marvel to go all the way back to their roots and for The Punisher to have an Iron Man 1 feel to it (which is easier said than done, because that movie is flawless, imo).  With Castle starting out in war, since Vietnam happened in the 60’s, instead, we could start Castle’s story in Afghanistan or the during the Gulf War.

4.  Right now, I have 2 people I would like to see play The Punisher/Frank Castle….

1.  Joe Manganiello.  Seems unlikely because he’s up for Deathstroke, but I feel like Manganiello would kill it as The Punisher in the MCU and he would fit right in.

2.  Justin Theroux, if Justin believes in the movie and gets behind the role, he would be amazing as Castle.

Thanks for reading and keeping The Punisher alive!!

Till next time….

Pretty interesting, but I don't like the take from the "Born". He needs to go through the process of being a honorable war hero into a cold murderer.

@Verzwei

Thanks for reading man, have you read "Born"? He's still an honorable hero, but the story shows that he has a monster hiding inside him, that's why he was able to survive Vietnam. He doesn't fully give in and become The Punisher until after he returns home, his family is murdered, and he finds out that the Police won't do anything because they are connected to the Mafia

Like most street level characters, i think Punisher would work best in a Netflix series.

I'm of the opinion that not every character that gets introduced needs to be an active member in the Avengers or even taking part in their storylines. Cameos and things along those lines in a story like Civil War would be understandable, but for the most part, i want Daredevil, Iron Fist, Punisher, Luke Cage, Moon Knight, and characters like that to take part in their own, smaller corner of the MCU. They should be in the same world as the Avengers, but there's no reason for them to interact. Let the street level characrers interact with each other and leave it at that

As for Punisher specifically, i'm a huge fan of his and I believe he works best when he's fighting the mobs and not super powered enemies. I think a good way to introduce him would be in the Daredevil series. Make a 2 part episode about him killing criminals in Hell's Kitchen and have Daredevile try to stop him. After that, spin him off in his own series that can delve into his background through flashbacks while also focusing on his current events, similar to the way Arrow approached things.

Netflix would provide a good stable for a show to be as edgy and violent as Marvel wants to be.

@CorndogBurglar

True, I hear you, and Netflix would definitely work but I really want to see Punisher interact with Shield and Cap too, and even Fury, Black Widow and Hawkeye....

Hopefully he shows up in Daredevil and Civil War, but it would be cool to see him established first on Netflix before he enters or cameos in the MCU

I loved Punisher Max and showed the Dark side of the Marvel universe.

Joe Manganiello would have been an interesting Punisher. As for Theroux I have only seen him in Bullet Proof Monk so cannot say much about him but he is a unique choice.

My Picks for Frank Castle are:

Karl Urban:

Owain Yeoman:

Scott Adkins:

If he wasn't already in the Marvel Universe, Frank Grillo, especially after The Purge: Anarchy, where he played a Punisher-esque character

The solution to having Punisher, Blade and Moon Knight make an appearance in the MCU.

Marvel and Netflix presents: Marvel Knights.

Karl Urban is my top choice.

And hasn't the Punisher already "appeared" in the MCU???

Totally, if Justin believed in the movie, I think he would be awesome as Castle....

And, I hope the Russo's have some plans for him in Civil War, that interview with the Penske trucks got me hyped, haha

Sweet article man totally agree we need to see this man on screen especially if its taken from the max series like you said. He needs to be a cross between Lorne Malvo and agent 47 just a pure phantom who when he shows up shit goes down and gets absolutely dark and [frick]ed and he when hes gone theres no trace of him. This show has to be 10x darker than the netlix daredevil show and go 18+ with profanity, grimey gory violence and maybe nudity

I bet if the defenders are a success you can bet Marvel will fast track the Marvel Knights

I just remembered Justin Theroux has a history with Marvel, he wrote the screenplay for Iron Man 2. And apparently from this clip he's a gun enthusiast.

@DeusExSponge Daredevil and the Netflix series are apparently going to be marketed/merchandised under the Marvel Knights banner, so that idea probably isn't a million miles away http://www.cinemablend.com/television/How-Daredevil-Being-Handled-Differently-Than-Marvel-Other-Properties-70604.html

@DrKinsolving Although I can see the temptation in moving up the Vietnam setting to a more recent conflict, i have to admit i'd love to see a Vietnam-era Punisher in the MCU - team him up with a young Nick Fury and General Ross in the early 1970s towards the end of the war, maybe expand out the Leviathan plot lines from Agent Carter into a bigger Cold War conspiracy involving the Russians and Vietcong - would be amazing i think. Plus then there is still the scope to see an older more grizzled Punisher in the modern day alongside present day Nick Fury etc.

@528491

I agree and the original storyline for Punisher in Vietnam works really well, and I love the dynamic between Cap's ideals from WW II and the Punisher's from Vietnam....

But, if the Punisher could meet up with everybody in the MCU now, I would want him to be in his prime. If he served in Vietnam, he would be pushing 70 or older right now
