Why the TMNT Series Doesn’t Need to Introduce Krang Just Yet

We know that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2 will feature Casey Jones, Bebop, and Rocksteady. There have also been rumors that Krang will be featured in the film. Here’s my reasons why we don't need see the villain from Dimension X just yet.

Editorial Opinion

Let’s face it, nobody was very optimistic about Michael Bay’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot. From the rumors that the Turtles origin would be changed, to the casting of Megan Fox as April O’Neil, there wasn't much news that could make fans hopeful for the reboot. When the film was released last August, the general consensus was “Eh, it’s not as bad as we thought it would be.” However, it still has more than its fair share of detractors.

A sequel is planned for release in 2016. Fans seem to be hopeful for this film, a new director and the inclusion of more fan favorite characters seem to indicate that the sequel will improve on the last movie. There have been rumors that one of the characters to be introduced will be Krang. While I do eventually want to see the Krang and Dimension X featured in this series, I do not think that they should be featured in the second film. Here are a few reasons.

Adding Krang Would Be Over-Saturation

One of my favorite things about the 2014 reboot was that it kept the story relatively simple. It didn't try to add in too much, it kept the story revolving around April, the Turtles, and the Shredder. It made for a simple and fun Turtles film that didn’t try too be more than it was.

The sequel is already going to have Casey Jones, Bebop, and Rocksteady. That’s three new characters to introduce. I know, Bebop and Rocksteady don't require to much character development, but still, they’re two new characters. The sequel needs to keep its story simple as well. This is Ninja Turtles, after all. We don’t need a super complicated, intricate plot. The best Turtles film (1990) had a straightforward, fun script that didn’t take itself too seriously. One of the biggest problems of 2007’s TMNT was that the more intricate it got, the more boring it got. We don't go to a Ninja Turtles film for a Winter Soldier level of plot, we go just to have fun. Keeping the Turtles films simpler and fun has proved to be the best way to go. I’m not saying make it stupid, I’m just saying they need to keep it fun and straightforward.

They Need to Perfect the Shredder

I didn’t have a problem with the Shredder as he was portrayed in the reboot. However, there is still much more to be done with the character. There was literally no character development or build up to him in the first film, he just appears and is the bad guy. In the sequel, they delve into his backstory and motivations a little bit more, and also show a bit more of the inner workings of the Foot Clan. The Shredder is the Turtles greatest nemesis, he deserves better treatment before they move on to other villains.

It’s Too Soon

An important part of crafting a film series is managing the escalation of threat. This was a major problem with the original Superman series. After the attack of General Zod, Superman III featured Richard Pryor and a killer computer virus. If the viewer has already seen Superman win in a battle with General Zod, why would they be worried that a computer hacker taking him down? The same goes for the Turtles. If they stop an alien invasion in TMNT2, then going back to fighting the Foot Clan in TMNT3 is a step down in terms of threat. Why would the viewer be worried about a clan of ninjas taking down the Turtles when they've already stopped an alien invasion? Bring back Shredder, introduce Bebop and Rocksteady, hell, bring in Baxter Stockman. Just save Krang for the third film so that there’s an escalation of threat.

They Still Need to Perfect Their Universe

While I thought the 2014 TMNT reboot was fun and entertaining, I don’t think they've managed to get the universe just right yet. Krang is a difficult concept to pull off, they need to get their footing a little bit better before they attempt to pull off a character like that. Make the sequel a little bit more cartoony by adding Bebob and Rocksteady, and maybe even Baxter Stockman. Give yourself time to learn and perfect your tone. Then, when they have the universe just right, go all out and introduce Krang in the third film.

Personally, I would rather they use the entire race of Utroms. Krang can be their leader or whatever.

But i agree. The Utroms/Krang shouldn't be a main factor in the sequel. From the first movie we already know that the mutagen is extraterrestrial, so they can't keep that hanging for too long. I think a good thing to do, especially since Shredder had the broken bottle of ooze at the end, is to have Krang working secretly with Shredder. They can show him in his cyborg body at the very end as a cliff-hanger, but for the majority of the movie, it should be Shredder using the mutagen to make Bebop and Rocksteady, with Krang basically educating him on how to use it correctly.

Again, Krang and the Utroms shouldn't be heavily involved, but they do need to be introduced in the sequel in some form. The first one also had Utroms in the big Japanese mural in the background of Shredder's lair. So they can't keep them out forever.

Good read, Superguy, but I do disagree.
I think Krang is entirely essential for the sequel. They need to reveal the origins of the turtles -The secret of the ooze, if you will- and how the Utroms and Krang might figure into this origin. Also, if it is to at least follow the structure of the comics then the big cosmic adventure would be next. Also, cosmic is the way to go, these days what with GOTG and the return of Star Wars.
I actually think that Casey should be the character that they do not include, this time around. I love Casey Jones, but he wouldn't really fit in a Dimension X film. He's more street level. I think they should save him for the third film, which could follow the classic Northampton/Return to New York storyline. This is the storyline in which Casey joins the status quo of the TMNT. Maybe they could have a hint of Casey in the sequel, but not as a major player.
If anyone else should be included it should be Fugitoid.
In fact, Superguy, I think I might disagree in a rather polar extreme kind of way. If what we have heard from the writers is right and the sequel will be a Dimension X story, then I think we should have all of these guys...

I hated the new Ninja Turtles. They didn't make Leonardo do badass things and they looked fake as shit.

I agree, no rush. I kind of hope this franchise follows the Harry Potter theme of getting more mature as the characters themselves mature. I liked how it was truly a franchise and not a bunch of sequels. Marvel has taken that format to their entire Cinematic Universe.

Let's see them deal with being allowed to go above ground before they deal with the entire Krang arc.

Exactly they've got a whole wealth of TMNT lore/universe in the Mirage/Image/IDW runs that they could do/adapt to make the world more established and interesting before jumping the gun to the utroms/dimension X stuff for part 2 e.g. setting up the triceraton invasion or fugitoid in the background.

What a [frick]ing stupid editorial. You don't want Krang in the sequel because you want them to perfect Shredder? Shredder who's already been the main villain of 3 films?! [frick] no. It's Krang's turn. 5 TMNT films and Krang was excluded from every single one.

I say [frick] SHREDDER. No more of him. No more Foot clan. It's damn time the TMNT film franchise moved beyond Shredder and the Foot

I am waiting for the day Krang finally gets into a movie so you [frick]ing haters can go suck eggs. Krang is part of the turtles origin. We have already had 3 films all about Shredder and the Foot. If anything I would want Krang and Baxter Stockman to be the villains. No more Shredder! The turtles have more enemies than JUST Shredder.

Bring on Krang
Bring on Baxter

Being the arch enemy doesn't mean Shredder has to be jumbled into every [frick]ing TMNT film. Give other villains a chance

TMNT producers, we want Krang in a live-action movie!! It's about time. Shredder has been the main villain in 3 movies of 4 (without counting the animated 2007 TMNT).
