Shyamalan Sensitive to Source Material of Avatar The Last Airbender

Night says he was very careful with the way he is handling the series plot points, not only out of respect for the source material but for also the respect of the fans, namely his daughter.
Lets be honest M. Night Shyamalan is not the first director who comes to mind when thinking about who should direct Avatar The Last Airbender. In fact he is almost the last director. It is well known that M. Night does not like to use action in his movies, he prefers to build on the anticipation of action and then at the end it kind of whimpers out. At least that's how it was in Lady of The Lake and The Village. Well with Avatar the successful director has no choice but to incorporate action into this film or it will bomb worse then a fat kid in Math class.

"It felt like an important movie to make," Shyamalan states. "The mythology of the series was so well thought out and has Buddhism and martial arts and… it has the deeper issues at its core. It's going to be a really fun summer movie, but underneath it there is a seriousness that talks about genocide and balance in the world and all the things that interest me that you've seen in other movies I've made."

I am glad he is taking this film seriously, but like I said M. Night you have to use action elements. This movie screams for some slow motion shots of Katara bending a drop pail of water and throwing it at the fire nation. Or Aang and Apa taking on a few of those Fire Nation ships that were introduced in the most recent trailer for the film.

Night says he was very careful with the way he is handling the series plot points, not only out of respect for the source material but for also the respect of the fans, namely his daughter. Nights daughter is rumored to be Avatar Obsessed. Which is good for us fans too. Night has also made the comment that he has put twice the work already into this film then he has had to do with his previous films. This statement gives me hope.

Noah Ringer (at 12, is already a bad ass black belt in Taekwondo) plays Aang the air bender, Nicola Peltz (Deck the Halls) and Jackson Rathbone (Jasper Cullen of Twilight fame) play friends Katara and Sokka, while Dev Patel in his first post Slumdog Millionaire role plays the evil Prince Zuko.

Patel goes on to say: "I wanted to do something as distant to Slumdog as possible," What's more different than playing a prince of a fairy tale nation who can control fire? I wanted to stretch myself as an actor. This guy in a nutshell, he's a villain with a heart. He's not evil for the sake of being evil."

Patel underwent martial arts and fight training for his action sequences. "They whipped my butt into shape," he states. Thank god.

Other cast include Aasif Mandvi (The Daily Show) as the Fire Nation Commander Shao, and Shaun Toub (Iron Man) as Uncle Iroh.

So Comic Book Movie Fans, what say you? Does it sound like M. Night Shyamalan has his head screwed on right? Or do you think we will get another hyped up movie only to disapoint with a lackluster ending?

"So there's this bold kid and he like...you wont beleive it , he like bends shit.........and at the end you find out he's not acyualy bold....twist dat muther"

Man have i had trouble getting on here today
teabag - 6/25/2009, 9:21 AM
@ Leee777: The Jman Most wanted pic is fan made from Lastson, the Comic Book Movie fan on this site with Tom Welling as Superman as his Avatar.
jman1977 - 6/25/2009, 9:24 AM
first off, I am a huge M. Night fan
I loved lady in the water because it was a great story filled with fantasy and mystery. he is clearly a fan of story telling and fantasy which makes him a great candidate for making this movie.
but of course it is very worrying to hear of a director who doesnt like using action in a movie that is almost pure action.
so I remain optimistic, but dont have my hopes too high

the teaser looked pretty amazing though
realfirstavenger - 6/25/2009, 9:24 AM
Its a real nice pic JMAN, good stuff!!! ; )

Lastson did a great job!

Soz, i meant how do you like change it once its up there, coz i wanna change the HULK finger picture on my site but cant lol! ; D

Hey JMAN @ Cant wait for your review of TRANSFORMERS! You seen it yet??
LEEE777 - 6/25/2009, 9:49 AM
The more I see or hear about this movie, the more I get excited. I think people will be pleasantly surprised when they finally see the finished project.
adamant877 - 6/25/2009, 9:54 AM
Well i'm a huge non-fan of M. Not Spellingouthisname but i can only judge by what he "shows" us and not by his words or his daughters. From what we have seen of the teaser, it looks very promissing unlike Gi Blow, Dragonchunks and Street Walker the legend of Chunk Leak.
Shaman - 6/25/2009, 9:54 AM
I loved Lady in the Water. My younger sister is a die hard avatar fan and she wasn't feeling the trailer at all.
MsKyle08 - 6/25/2009, 9:57 AM
@ Leee, I am actually at Johnny Love's house right now and we are thinking the Transformers Movie Review to be posted on Monday. We both have family obligations to deal with this weekend. I have not seen it yet but will see it Saturday at the IMAX. How about you? Have you seen Transformers yet?
jman1977 - 6/25/2009, 10:00 AM
IF SHAMALAMADING DONG'S DAUGHTER IS A FAN, SHE HAS TO BE SEEING WHAT HE'S DOING..HIS OTHER MOVIES ARE OK, A COUPLE REALLY GOOD, IF HE MESSES THIS ONE UP THERE WILL BE ALOT...ALOT....ALOT OF ANGRY PEOPLE,THAT MIGHT CRUCIFY HIM.
GUNSMITH - 6/25/2009, 10:01 AM
No man, not yet! Prob see it 2morro hopefully. Cool, cheers for that, hope you both enjoy it when ya get the chance to see it!

Hey, hope you got your PRIME voice sorted out lol! : D

Anyways say hi to Johnny an stay cool man! :thumbs

P.s. I reckon its gonna be mind blowing but not lookin' forward to the JAR JAR ROBO TWINS lol, oh an GENERAL HAWK don't get his cameo dammit! (So i here anyways) ; D
LEEE777 - 6/25/2009, 10:12 AM
So does the kid use a blow vac or what?
teabag - 6/25/2009, 10:25 AM
The kid bends air to his will. He sucks and blows at the same time... the kid's a master :)
Shaman - 6/25/2009, 10:28 AM
Ok. I am a HUGE Avatar: The Last Airbender fan. I think it is amazing for a kids show, and for an American anime-style series. I have the entire series on DVD and still watch the re-runs they show on Nick. I have to admit Shalamamamaman was not at all close to the choice I would've gone with. I was (and still am a little) worried about this film going live action. There are some shows that are just amazing animated that live action couldn't compare, and to me this is one. So was DBZ. I watched the trailer for the Last Airbender and I liked it. I am actually a little excited. Looking forward to a new trailer. Hoping it won't be an over-hyped disappointment like many of his movies. Am a little concerned about the casting though now that I know who's playing who...

P.S. WHAT ABOUT TOPH!!!!!!! Considering she's not in it or not casted yet makes me think they are only covering book 1.
InstigatorGIRL - 6/25/2009, 10:30 AM
@ SHaman Kinda like Gi-Joe then....got it!!
teabag - 6/25/2009, 10:31 AM
@ Shaman.

No it was Street Walker the Legend of Done Me!
THEHAWK - 6/25/2009, 10:32 AM
InstigatorGirl: I think I remember reading somewhere that that was exactly his intention... To do the first story, and leave it open for possible sequals.
The casting on this, in my opinion, has been superb so far! Both of the male leads are martial arts veterans, and have both had extensive training. Dev Patel is an incredible actor, and after his portrayal in "Slumdog Millionaire" (GREAT movie!), I can't wait to see him in this!
What exactly did you mean when you said you were concerned about the casting? Were you referring to some of the other casting choices?
adamant877 - 6/25/2009, 10:42 AM
yeah like Sokka and Iroh and the General
InstigatorGIRL - 6/25/2009, 11:00 AM
teabag... i have nnnnooo idea what you meant right there... Oh... wait... i just got it... cause Gi Joe also blows and sucks at the same time... nice :)

InstigatorGIRL- Are you saying you're a "HUGE Avatar" and the last possible Airbender fan??? Or that you're a huge fan of "Avatar: The Last Airbender??? LOL :P

Adamant- I really... really... soooooooo did not like Slumdog. But Patel was very very good in it though! Can't wait to see what he can do in a movie that appeals a bit more to me.
Shaman - 6/25/2009, 11:03 AM
Boy did i get a shock with slumdog....i thought it was All Dogs go to Heaven 3
teabag - 6/25/2009, 11:06 AM
b vb
kamizzle710 - 6/25/2009, 11:15 AM
Teabag- I actually saw it after Roar gave us all the explanation of what it was so i knew what i was up against. I still gave it a chance but goddamn was it ever not a movie for me.
Shaman - 6/25/2009, 11:31 AM
The movie was written by the guys who wrote the show, so I'm not worried about how well-written the movie will be. The only worry I had was the directing because the Happening was one of the biggest piece of crap excuses for a movie I've ever seen, but the trailer actually makes it look like it will be well-directed. So as of right now, I'm more than hopeful. I'll make my final judgement when the actual trailer comes out and we get to see some dialogue.
ElBeaster - 6/25/2009, 11:34 AM
Dont worry me neither.......just can never sit through it.

teabag - 6/25/2009, 11:35 AM
I'd prefer "1 night in Chyna" LOL :P
Shaman - 6/25/2009, 11:51 AM
i like "whats the Crack in Chyna"
teabag - 6/25/2009, 11:54 AM
Damn mongolians.
Shaman - 6/25/2009, 12:31 PM
Nice Avatar
teabag - 6/25/2009, 12:44 PM
Best comic book ever!!! Marvel's Fight-Man. More action in three pages of his one-shot than there was in a full year of Savage Dragon comics. And funny to boot!!! Evan Dorkin is a comedic comic book master!!!

VIVA MILK N' CHEESE!!!
Shaman - 6/25/2009, 12:54 PM
Fight man!!!!!

I loved the one with Agent X with him!!!
THEPHOENIX - 6/25/2009, 12:59 PM
Wasn't there only just the one "one-shot"??? I don't recall agent X...
Shaman - 6/25/2009, 1:11 PM
This sounds promising. The trailer as unreal but just that, a teaser. It's hard to judge until there are some dialogue revealed to see how he handles the characters. Hopefully he doesn't turn Apa into a giant racist flying buffalo ala Bay with the twins. But I have a feeling this is going to be something new from him and a different directional step than he has done before.

Transformers Collectible Trading Game
McSqueeze - 6/25/2009, 1:14 PM
"It will bomb worse then a fat kid in Math class." Do fat kids do worse in math class than skinny ones? How do they do if they are dumb?

The rest of the movie news sounds promising to me, though. Hope that his daughter kicks his but and throws tantrums whenever he tries to make it dumb and boring so that he caves in and does it well. If not I really think that people will be out to give him a twist ending even HE won't see comming...
necrosage2005 - 6/25/2009, 2:16 PM
"lady in the lake" lol it'sd funny that u accidentally came up with a slightly better name for it.. it's lady in the water tho..
fotc - 6/25/2009, 2:25 PM

drock - 6/25/2009, 4:25 PM

superdog - 6/25/2009, 4:52 PM
Yes cuzz when i think of Buddhism and the Martial Arts i think of India?! WTF!!! Does anyone know that this whole series plot was based around the arrival of Sozen's Comet... that sounds Indian to me.... yeah right! I truly hope this movie is as least as good as the ANIME.

@LEE777- I love how you still F with the name of Wolverine : X-Meh !!!
shibazz - 6/25/2009, 8:34 PM
I hope the movie stays close to the source material as possible. I don't want this to end up like Dragonball Evolution. At least the trailer looks promising.
Bandrews1 - 6/25/2009, 8:56 PM
The people who wrote the show scripted it, but they said they wanted to make it different.
ElBeaster - 6/25/2009, 9:14 PM
I'm reserving judgement on this moive. I've only seen a couple episodes but I really don't know how that would translate to a live action movie.
Soilworley - 6/25/2009, 9:52 PM
If he does this right..oh man this movie is gonna be amazing
on3badmammajama - 6/25/2009, 11:23 PM
