Glad it's moving forward still a fan of Will Smith despite the massively stupid thing he did at the Oscars.

bkmeijer1 - 2/1/2023, 8:12 AM
@Godzilla2000Zer - it was an overreaction, but I don't blame him.

If people wanna cancel him over a slap, they should cancel Chris Rock over making fun of someone with a disease as well.
Origame
Origame - 2/1/2023, 8:28 AM
@bkmeijer1 - as someone who found the joke to be insensitive, you really can't say the people calling for Smith to be canceled over the slap need to also cancel rock over a joke.

Like seriously. One was an actual crime and the other was a joke.

And the "disease" he was making fun of was baldness. Something media regularly makes fun of all the time.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/1/2023, 8:36 AM
@Origame - violence is constantly being made fun of too, so that would just be hypocritical.

My opinion is that neither should've done what they did and that's it.
Origame
Origame - 2/1/2023, 8:46 AM
@bkmeijer1 - ...he didn't make fun of violence. He actually committed violence.

And I agree with that overall point, but one was much more in the wrong than the other.
Godzilla2000Zer
Godzilla2000Zer - 2/1/2023, 8:46 AM
@bkmeijer1 - Yeah my gf has the same condition so I definitely understand.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/1/2023, 8:51 AM
@Origame - I didn't say he made fun of it. Just in general it's being made fun of, just like how you mention conditions are being made fun of as well. It's the media being hypocritical.

There's definitely different levels of wrong though.
Origame
Origame - 2/1/2023, 9:56 AM
@bkmeijer1 - ...the point of mentioning the joking the media has done is to prove Chris making his joke wasn't that big of a deal. Where were you when the Simpsons were making jokes about putting bald people in concentration camps? Had will Smith made a joke about hitting Chris Rock over that joke, then I'd totally agree he and Chris were on the same levels there. But he didn't. He straight up hit Chris. It's really not a fair point to claim we should call for Chris to be canceled when all he did was make a joke and Smith f@#$ing attacked him.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/1/2023, 10:06 AM
@Origame - ''Where were you when the Simpsons were making jokes about putting bald people in concentration camps?''

Also saying it they shouldn't have done what they did.

I agree though, Will especially could've handled this a lot better. Still, Chris also should've just refrained from making fun of other people. It's the worst kind of comedy in my opinion.
Origame
Origame - 2/1/2023, 11:32 AM
@bkmeijer1 - comedy inherently is at the expense of others in some way. Any comedian will tell you that. And it's not like he was doing that to her specifically. He gave one joke in passing while roasting the entire audience. And the context of said joke was actually really positive if you think about that, since GI Jane is a very empowering movie.

But again, you insisted hypocrisy for those calling for will to be canceled but not rock. That implies they are on the same level.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/1/2023, 11:45 AM
@Origame - well, there aren't really different layers to cancelling I guess. Either you get cancelled, or you don't. It's not like we'll cancel Will for 5 years and Chris for 2
Origame
Origame - 2/1/2023, 11:51 AM
@bkmeijer1 - exactly. Meaning to say we should be calling for Chris to be canceled if we're doing that to Smith is to directly say they're comparable. That's what you've been arguing, whether you realize it or not. That assault is on the same level as a joke.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/1/2023, 11:55 AM
@Origame - then hereby I say we cancel Will for 5 years and Chris for 2.
Origame
Origame - 2/1/2023, 11:58 AM
@bkmeijer1 - better, but still seems harsh considering Smith committed a crime that can put him in prison for a year while what rock did is protected by the US constitution.

The1st - 2/1/2023, 2:19 PM
@Godzilla2000Zer - You mean being human? An emotional one mind you, but yeah. People always react to the moment framed for them on "tv". There's always more context to be had.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/1/2023, 2:26 PM
@Origame - slapping someone in the face is a year in jail? Damn, that's 10 year cancellation at the minimum.

I like Will Smith (one slap doesn't change that), so I'm glad he's still getting work.

As for the directors, I like their work as well and still refuse to believe their Batgirl movie was so bad it would've hurt them.
MosquitoFarmer
MosquitoFarmer - 2/1/2023, 10:13 AM
@bkmeijer1 - I think it would have hurt them because they said it was a big screen film from the get go. If they had advertised it for the small screen, I'm assuming that's where it would have done better; but that probably wouldn't cover the production costs. If they released it theatrically, and it's not of big screen quality, it would be panned and even worse PR for WB/DC than they already have. They analyzed that financially they make more money through tax breaks to shelve it.
I mean Black Adam was of big screen quality, and most folks here seem to suggest it hurt DC by way of The Rock and how the movie turned out. Plus they lost a bunch more money hyping the hell out of it after making it.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/1/2023, 10:19 AM
@MosquitoFarmer - it's depends how you look at how it would've hurt them.

You're right they would've been panned for making a big screen movie that's not big screen quality. However, when it was first announced it was meant to be an HBO Max exclusive like Blue Beetle. Only the latter had far more time to get it to that level.

However, I don't think it would've hurt them in that they would never get a job again. Heck, DC Studios themselves wanna work with them again, so it can't possibly be that bad.
MosquitoFarmer
MosquitoFarmer - 2/1/2023, 10:43 AM
@bkmeijer1 - Yeah, I think people, especially after all this, would be even more kind to the actors if anything. But I can't imagine it's that the performances were that awful. I'm of the boat, I would hope they find a way to eventually release it, but I don't know how all their reasoning works. At the very least, with the Brendan Fraser resurgence they would guarantee an audience alone, never mind how curious many of us are about the movie now anyway.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/1/2023, 10:54 AM
@MosquitoFarmer - really wouldn't be surprised if it leaks online.

And yeah, the performances can't awful either. Grace was great in In the Heights, and Fraser definitely is not one to phone it in either.

UniqNo
UniqNo - 2/1/2023, 8:17 AM
I'm here for it, but there better be some meta commentary on Smith's stupidity. Like maybe his character getting slapped about a bit...in an obvious way.

I like him still, but i'd be lieing if i said i didn't see him differently.

I would have preferred they left it a bit longer though... 8/9 years in between 1 and 2, and about 15 years in between 2 and 3. This one is coming quickly when you think of it.... i wonder if it's that Smith needs the work? Not for the money, but to repair his reputation.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/1/2023, 10:08 AM
@UniqNo - probably because For Life did pretty well considering and they wanna continue banking on that.

Same with Ghostbusters Afterlife getting a sequel so fast. Or Avatar 3 being around the corner. Hollywood doesn't like original franchises, so they keep the one that have been revived going.
UniqNo
UniqNo - 2/1/2023, 10:57 AM
@bkmeijer1 - I think they all did well, but maybe Sony don't have much else to bank on.

For Smith, I peronsally wouldn't have minded a sequel to Bright first, being as he never really does sequels outside of MIB and BB's and he was down for that.
bkmeijer1
bkmeijer1 - 2/1/2023, 11:04 AM
@UniqNo - never even seen Bright as I didn't hear anything good about it, so I would be surprised if it get's a sequel.

It did have an animated show I think though.

Will Smith is over rated.
I’d rather see a Geriatric Lethal Weapon 5. With old ass Glover and old racist ass Gibson.
