Avengers: Doomsday Star Chris Evans Confirms "Luke Cage" Codename, Teases Steve Rogers' "Brutal" Story Arc

Chris Evans has confirmed reports that Steve Rogers was codenamed "Luke Cage" on the set of Avengers: Doomsday, teases scenes with Bucky Barnes, and reveals plans for a "brutal" story arc.

Chris Evans was at Fan Expo in Boston this weekend, and during a Q&A with fans (via @prttyboytnystrk and @drdoomarchive), the actor talked about his return as Steve Rogers in Avengers: Doomsday.

The actor reprising his most iconic role was first reported by the trades months before the movie started production. Evans repeatedly denied that there was any truth to the rumours, and his return wasn't confirmed until the first Avengers: Doomsday teaser was released last December.

We've since seen him reunite with Thor, proving that he's the real deal—and still worthy—by wielding Mjolnir.

Teasing what we can expect from Avengers: Doomsday, Evans said, "The Russos love beating up Steve Rogers. Their favourite thing to do is to just beat the crap out of him. To them, that’s what makes a hero, and that’s someone who gets punched so many times but still gets up."

"So they keep finding new ways to kick his butt," the actor continued, "but this one was brutal, and a really good examination into his nature and his values."

As a reminder, it's been widely reported that Steve's decision to travel back in time to get his happy ending with Peggy Carter may be what leads to the collapse of the Multiverse. At the very least, it leads to tragedy for Doctor Doom, who makes the former Captain America the target of his hatred in this movie.

Reflecting on the secrecy surrounding Avengers: Doomsday, Evans revealed that he was codenamed "Luke Cage," which confirms rumours that the 1960s-era house built in Windsor Great Park is where Steve, Peggy, and their child live.

"Within the script, my character was called Luke Cage just in case things leaked," he shared. "On the call sheets, I was called Luke Cage. Even on set, they'd say, 'Luke Cage is travelling.' It was such a locked-down thing."

Evans also seemed to confirm that he'll share scenes with Sebastian Stan's Bucky Barnes in the next Avengers movie, which has generated a great deal of excitement on social media. "We really love working together so much, and I guess I can't give too much away...this is so tricky. I was about to start really talking. You almost got me," he teased.

In Avengers: Doomsday, beloved heroes from three distinct universes will be set on a deadly collision course and face an existential threat unlike anything they’ve ever encountered.

Avengers: Doomsday is set to be released on December 18.

If someone shot my son I'd reset the universe, too.

@Loohnutick - They’re killing Steve and Peggy’s kid which is going to really turn away families and casual fans and turn off long time fans. It’s way too dark for this genre, but the Russo’s don’t seem to care

@Bucky74 - it's still a rumor, probably to throw off leakers.

@Bucky74 - I agree it's way too dark for a Disney/Marvel film. Either it doesn't happen, or the kid is resurrected by the film's end.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 8/10/2026, 2:04 PM
@Loohnutick - I have a strong feeling they’re going to do it, which IMO is way too dark and kills all the emotional investment in their relationship. Unless it’s a fake out and Tony is using Steve and Peggy’s son with the other powered kids to help power or rule Battleworld or something. I’d actually be fine with that. Then it’s up to them to free their son and stop Doom with the other heroes
Bucky74

@KetracelWhite74 - It’s too much and totally betrays Steve and Peggy’s MCU history. If it’s a fake out, that’s fine, but they can accomplish the same thing by killing Bucky (his doing DC now so it’s likely). Killed Steve’s kid would betray a lot of fan good will

@KetracelWhite74 - Too dark for pedo disney that glorifies witches and magic ? Seems par for the course to me.

@KetracelWhite74 - In nearly every disney film they have the death of a parent.

@captainwalker - Death of a parent is part of the hero's journey. That's why so many heroes are orphans. Killing a little kid is a little different.

They're about to un-do their biggest success. Couldn't leave well enough alone.

They're gonna ruin Cap's ending. This could have easily been a Cap variant. Oh but it needs to be the real Cap so they can ruin Doom's origin too smh.

If you needed a reason for the incursions why didn't you go to the comics? Beyonders. You're welcome. [frick]ing morons think they're infallible. We'll see this Christmas.

@ObserverIO - A Cap variant with the exact same history who didn’t stay with Peggy would have accomplished the same thing.

I guess he won't tell Peggy about the things he did with her grandniece and how he just abandoned her without even a simple "bye".

@SethBullock - Well they just kissed one time and then he had to go on the run as a fugitive from the Government. Then Thanos came to earth and through everything into chaos.

@LeonNova - There are things called phones, tablets, laptops, planes/quinjets, etc.

He is a superhero and she is an agent of SHIELD, they surely could find ways to talk and meet more than once or twice, before and after Thanos was defeated.

Kidding aside , his comments sound good but do make me think that the leak (especially one in particular about the fate of his son) might be true which would be nuts and the reaction would be crazy to see not just in theaters but the internet aswell.

Anyway , I still wish Evans wasn’t brought back as Steve but since he is then I hope they give him a truly good & definitive ending in Doomsday/SW!!.

"At the very least, it leads to tragedy for Doctor Doom, who makes the former Captain America the target of his hatred in this movie."

We can all agree that this is at least a potential spoiler, yeah? I really thought this one would be safe to click into since it was based on a publicly available article, but nope! Oh well.

@Clintthahamster - Not really, that's been all over internet for the past 3 months or so.

@DarkTanicus - All over which internet? I haven't seen it. And, sorry, I don't buy the "Well, it's already been spoiled everywhere else! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯" argument. But whatever. I know the website I'm visiting, so I know the risks.

@DarkTanicus - All but one of those are based on algorithms, and since I generally avoid rumors and spoilers, so does my algorithm . . . anyway, it's not one of those things that's going to spoil the whole movie (probably?) just maybe a nice thing to find out while watching the movie.
