It's already been confirmed that Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings director Daniel Destin Cretton will helm Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, but what about Avengers: Secret Wars?
That's the Multiverse Saga's grand finale, and a movie we know is a dream project for the Russo Brothers. Unfortunately, Joe and Anthony are busy for the foreseeable future, meaning they won't be returning to the MCU for that project. Recently, one contender whose name has started gaining traction online is Black Panther: Wakanda Forever helmer Ryan Coogler.
We'd argue that the filmmaker would be perfect for the job, but in an interview with Variety, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige dialled back expectations.
"Well, I would want Ryan to do anything at any time because he’s a singular talent and a great person to spend years with," he told the trade. "But no, in all honesty, there’ve been no conversations. We’ve not spoken to him about Secret Wars."
As for Coogler himself, he remains focused on the Black Panther sequel for the time being. "I love making movies, but to quote a character in our movie, I gave this everything. This movie got everything I have. I’m at that place where I think I’ve got this press tour in me and then I’ve got to sit down and reflect."
"Probably cry a lot, because I’ve been holding that back," he admitted, reflecting on the emotional experience of making the sequel. "And then from there, figure out whatever’s next."
Rumour has it Marvel Studios is keen to work with a director they've collaborated with before on Secret Wars, leaving Coogler a likely contender even if they haven't discussed it. Peyton Reed is another possibility, as are the likes of Jon Watts and any number of filmmakers they've worked with on Disney+.
We'll have to wait and see for now, but with both of The Avengers movies starting to take shape, it shouldn't be too much longer before an official announcement is made.
Avengers: Secret Wars is set to be released in theaters on May 1, 2026.
