Daredevil Star Charlie Cox Talks Spider-Man: Brand New Day Absence, Says He Won't Be In Avengers: Secret Wars

Appearing at a comic convention in the UK, Charlie Cox has broken his silence about not reprising his role as Daredevil in Spider-Man: Brand New Day and confirms he won't appear in Avengers: Secret Wars.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has been hailed by many fans as the wall-crawler's best movie yet, but for some, it's hard to forgive Daredevil's absence.

Charlie Cox made his official MCU debut as Matt Murdock in 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home, and with Jon Bernthal's Punisher front and centre in Brand New Day, it seemed a given that the Man Without Fear might show up. After all, even with Matt behind bars, the opportunity was there to show him in the Department of Damage Control prison.

Spider-Man battling a Daredevil whose mind was being controlled by Jean Grey had heaps of potential, but it's easy enough to see why that didn't make it into the movie. Throw in the fact that Daredevil: Born Again is taking place in its own corner of the MCU, and we're once again stuck waiting to see Spidey share the screen with 'ol Hornhead.

Appearing at a comic convention in the UK, Charlie Cox broke his silence on not being part of Spider-Man: Brand New Day after months of speculation and rumours.

"I'm so glad I don't have to answer that question anymore. Ugh. It's awful because I knew I wasn't in it," he told fans, adding, "The amount of times people would be like, 'Are you in Spider-Man?' I just knew...they'd walk away with this big grin on their face, and that their hearts were gonna break."

Cox was also asked whether Daredevil could appear in Avengers: Secret Wars, and responded with a definitive, "No, I'm not going to be in it, no. Sorry. And you can believe me now."

With countless heroes likely to appear in the 2027 movie, it's a little heartbreaking to think Marvel Studios can't somehow find a role for Disney+'s Defenders. Of course, the movie hasn't started shooting yet, so there's always time for things to change and for Cox's Man Without Fear to get his due on the big screen.

Marvel Studios appears to be moving away from live-action TV shows on Disney+, leading to speculation that Daredevil: Born Again will end after Season 3. That would be a shame, but if it opens the door to Daredevil being in Spider-Man 5, it might not be the worst thing...

I understand this decision, but I hate it. Daredevil has always been one of my favorites since his comics intro.

@DocSpock - I think it was revealed last year that Sony has the movie rights for Daredevil and Kingpin. Apparently Marvel doesn't want to pay Sony to use them so there are no plans to ever have them on the big screen.

Apparently the rights are still a mess because Kingpin and Daredevil movie rights are tied with Spiderman and Marvel only gained the TV rights back. That was the reason why Kingpin was used in the 1st Into the Spiderverse film and why Charlie Cox only appeared in SpiderMan No Way Home.

He’s doing okay, fortunately, but it sounds like he needs to slow down his schedule a little. There can be only one Christopher Lambert!

Stop treating Daredevil as a 2nd class citizen. Put him on the big screen already, dammit!

@TheShellyMan - Maybe he’s in it but just going full method. Cox: Matt can’t see himself working with these heroes.

Get it!? I’m here all week, folks. Tip your waitress

now having seen the movie, he clearly had no place in it & that's fine.

but it's definitely annoying to now have these characters under the same umbrella and yet they haven't gotten this classic team-up to launch.

it'll probably be another 4-5 years before we get another Spidey movie, and they'll likely focus on shifting to Miles at that point. so i hope they can fit in a DD or Defenders flick in between make this duo happen.

Have him be the contractually obligated MCU hero in the 5th one.

He didn't need to be in this movie, just like meager potatoes. I bet Avi Arad wanted that cameo lol Venom vibes

I'm fine with him not being in Secret Wars, it's always weird to have another low powered hero against cosmic god-like threats. Give me a film of DD teaming up with street level heroes.

I feel like he'd have been a better fit than Punisher in it, with the Hand in there. But obviously the Punisher's anti-hero and the clash with Spidey morales made for better character drama in that sense

Killing Foggy was a big mistake. Having DD appear in She-Hulk was dumb. Over using Fisk didn't work out very well for them. All of it hurt interest in the series, hurt ratings, hurt the potential for Daredevil to go big.
Kozmik
Kozmik - 8/9/2026, 11:39 AM
@ManDeth - I don't have much an opinion about killing Foggy though why is Daredevil's appearance in She-Hulk dumb? And I admit to not having watched it – I'm not really a She-Hulk fan – but that's exactly something that could have happened in the comics.

And it's worth mentioning that you're making your last three sentences up because you have no idea if 'Fisk didn't work out well for them.' YOU might have thought so, but just because you think so doesn't mean everyone else feels the same.

You don't know if it hurt interest in the series, though you clearly wanted it to.

You literally made all of that up.
asherman93
asherman93 - 8/9/2026, 8:16 PM
@ManDeth - Killing Foggy was the fault of the earlier creative team and whoever had the dumb idea to initially minimize the Netflix connections. (Though I still cannot help but think Foggy will turn out to be in Witness Protection - preferably with Marcy Stahl.)
I'm also pretty sure that She-Hulk portrayed Matt in a pretty positive manner.

And by the way, series that perform terribly don't tend to get second seasons, do they?

I might be projecting somewhat, but Charlie Cox seems to genuinely care about what fans of Daredevil think.

And that he seems to do so unironically is even more unusual.

I’d like Spidey’s next movie to be a team up with Daredevil. The street level stories for Spider-Man remain the best and the two could go up against any number of villains.

ModHaterSLADE - 8/9/2026, 12:50 PM
Daredevil works better on a street level anyway.
Lucasberg

They just need to do a full blown Daredevil movie for crying out loud.
asherman93
asherman93 - 8/9/2026, 8:09 PM
@Lucasberg - Nah. Honestly, Matt's story works better as a TV show.
Now if they were to adapt the Shadowland storyline, THAT I could see make for a good movie.
Lucasberg
Lucasberg - 8/9/2026, 8:43 PM
@asherman93 - I want both. It could go badly like Mando and Grogu but that one just blew it because it was really just like two episodes made into a movie. A daredevil with grander action and higher stakes could be a great great movie. Same as Punisher.
asherman93
asherman93 - 8/10/2026, 7:07 PM
@Lucasberg - I feel like the issue with Mando and Grogu was ironically that it was exactly what people wanted: a truly standalone Star Wars film... And thus there was no impetus to feel like an event film that must be seen. (Its like Solo or The Clone Wars movie in that sense.)

However, if you told me that the filmmakers had considered making this film Din Djarin's swansong, I'd actually believe you, both because of that scene of his final stand against droids while poisoned, his words about Grogu outliving him... and because that would've given it a true emotional core and made feel live a "must-see".

(And I say that as someone who liked the film.)
Lucasberg
Lucasberg - 8/10/2026, 7:38 PM
@asherman93 - they should have killed him in that movie which would propel Grogu in his journey as a Jedi!
asherman93
asherman93 - 8/10/2026, 7:49 PM
@Lucasberg - I don't know about "propelling Grogu in his journey as a Jedi" - fun fact: I've never properly watched The Mandalorian - but it would, at the very least, "why wasn't this just another season of the show".

But I can at least see some rationale of not wanting to kill off Din his big screen debut.

Really, I'm just waiting for whatever form Episode X and/or that Rey movie will take to come out; just make Rey and Finn the main characters - preferably as a Jedi power couple - and I will buy tickets to the first showing.
Lucasberg
Lucasberg - 8/10/2026, 9:22 PM
@asherman93 - tends to be the way. Qui Gon dies in the formation of Obi-Wan. Obi Wan dies in the formation of Luke. Han, Luke and Leia die in the formation of Rey. Tragedy spurs growth and new life oddly enough

Kevin Feige doesn't value Daredevil.
He once wanted to give the rights of him and his entire rogues gallery to Fox for the rights of Silver Surfer and Galactus only.

asherman93
asherman93 - 8/9/2026, 8:08 PM
@MarvelZombie616 - Yes, he clearly doesn't value Daredevil at all.
He demonstrated said apathy by initially giving Born Again Season 1, 18 episodes - more than ANY of the the other Disney+ shows, or the Netflix shows - and a two-season order and bringing back said show's biggest stars.

Yeah... I call bullshit, bub. I may not agree with all of Feige's decisions involving Matt, but the dude clearly likes the show.
TheVisionary25
TheVisionary25 - 8/9/2026, 2:22 PM
Honestly while a cameo would be fun , I don’t think he’s particularly necessary in Doomsday & Secret Wars tbh so I would be fine with him not being in these films especially given his situation at the end of BA S2 finale which I’m more interested in following up tbh…

Plus , I would rather have him in a Spidey film than Avengers so hopefully he’s in these films especially next one!!.

There are only two good reasons why Charlie Cox's Daredevil isn't in Secret Wars.

1. They have Ben Affleck instead.
2. They're introducing the new post-Secret Wars Daredevil instead.

Otherwise [frick] Marvel.
Puckaluck
Puckaluck - 8/10/2026, 10:07 AM
I can’t believe Marvel went through all the trouble of getting Daredevil back on the screen(small), especially with them having to completely redo the whole first season, and they are just going to have it be a few seasons of tv and that’s it. Like, unless we do get him in Spider-Man 5(highly doubt it), what’s the point? They need to do more with him.

Make a Daredevil movie with Spider-Man and Punisher supporting roles and it'll do fine at the box office.
