Clayface Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed — Critics Weigh In On "Crowd-Pleasing," "Uneven" DCU Movie

Clayface has debuted with a 73% Rotten Tomatoes score, narrowly missing Certified Fresh status. See what critics are saying about DC Studios' R-rated horror movie ahead of its release.

The reviews are in for DC Studios' Clayface, and with 74 verdicts counted as we write this, the movie has debuted with a "Fresh" 73% on Rotten Tomatoes. While the positive reviews aren't glowing, what ultimately matters for that score is whether a critic ticks "Fresh" or "Rotten," and the majority have chosen the former.

With 73%, Clayface is better-reviewed than Supergirl (52%) but sits behind Superman (83%), Lanterns (91%), Creature Commandos (93%), and Peacemaker Season 2 (94%). To be "Certified Fresh," the R-rated horror movie will need to hit 75% or above.

By the end of the weekend, hundreds of reviews will have likely been counted, so expect Clayface's score to either increase or decrease accordingly.

Starting with the "Fresh" reviews for the movie, GamesRadar+ writes, "As a horror movie, its skin-deep thrills and spills mask an uneven tragedy that even the emerging star power of Tom Rhys Harries can't overcome completely." Nerdist adds, "Clayface goes from an average (at best) film to an absolute blast once Tom Rhys Harries’ Matt Hagens starts using his powers to get his crowd-pleasing vengeance."

Metro explains, "Clayface has enough acting chops and hacking-off-of-chops to satisfy fans looking for a good, grisly time – even if there’s a nagging feeling it could have been a bit more significant."

Dread Central notes, "DC Studios first genre outing under James Gunn’s leadership delivers a muddy mixed bag of melty body horror and tonal inconsistencies." Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter raves, "Clayface emerges as one of the year’s big surprises," with Awards Radar declaring, "Clayface has gore galore and a hard R take on the underrated batman villain. Ultimately, it's just fine, but the good does outweigh the bad."

On the "Rotten" side, we have USA Today, which concludes, "Director James Watkins’ unnerving, frustrating thriller can only do so much melting Tom Rhys Harries’ sharp features amid a bunch of creepy scenes and a severe lack of character development." According to Rolling Stone, "The equivalent of eating a handful of Play-Doh™, and twice as flavorless."

CBR was similarly unimpressed, explaining, "A bold swing, and perhaps it will be viewed more favorably with time. But right now, much like its lead character, the film feels a bit empty inside." RogerEbert.com adds, "A movie shouldn’t spoon feed you its themes, but it also needs to put more than misshapen mush on your plate."

IndieWire wasn't impressed, and states, "The uneven nature of the film, its plotting, its character motivations, and its aims only become bigger and bloodier as the film winds on. Malleable, sure, but this ambitious misfire can never conform to one shape, one final form, or one good idea."

Finally, we hear from Inverse. "Its glimmers of potential only give us peeks at the better movies it could’ve been, while an underbaked script and laughably clunky dialogue only seal the deal: this was a failed experiment that should’ve never left the lab."

As a reminder, we concluded our Clayface review by saying, "Tom Rhys Harries shines in Clayface, an uninspired and unoriginal movie that's too light on horror and lacking in comic book personality to be anything but forgettable. It should have been a game-changer for the genre; instead, it's DC's Morbius moment."

In Clayface, Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting-edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self, but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiralling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.

The movie stars Tom Rhys Harries in the title role of the "cult-favourite" villain from Gotham's rogues' gallery. The cast includes Naomi Ackie, David Dencik, Max Minghella and Eddie Marsan, as well as Nancy Carroll and Joshua James.

James Watkins directs from a screenplay by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, with Flanagan also getting a "Story by" credit.

Clayface will be released in theaters on October 23.

I know it pained you to post this 😂😂. Tried to compare this to Morbius and start a hate campaign days early. Morbius had a 15% rotten tomatoes score to Clayface’s 74% btw. Morbius’s score is more in line with Snyder’s classics such as Batman v Superman and Justice League

I wonder how Josh's futile crusade against DC is going to go after they revoke his press pass to future press screenings for breaking the embargo. Excited to see Clayface this weekend.
JoshWilding
JoshWilding - 10/21/2026, 4:25 PM
@NHartMusic - There's no such thing as a "press pass" for screenings. I also published a pretty lengthy article earlier today about how I've chosen not to attend a WB press screening since 2022, so I'll be okay. 🤣

FireGunn
FireGunn - 10/21/2026, 4:45 PM

If it can stay within the 70s range, then that's a major win for both the movie and studio.

Robin1994
Robin1994 - 10/21/2026, 4:41 PM
@WhatIfRickJames - of course it is. Look at the author - a complete biased loser, hack known as JoshWetting who’s trying extremely hard to cope, and is supposed to be an unbiased reviewer but he has a one-sided beef with the DCU, simply because he’s a Snyderbot. Even now he’s saying if he were trying to bait he’d highlight how this is the second lowest reviewed movie of the DCU despite there only being 3 movies in the DCU. Little does he acknowledge that even a 73% would be the second highest rotten tomatoes score of his hero Snyder’s career spanning 15 movies and over 20 years lol.

So it wasn’t the Sony Spider-Man universe Morbius expected disaster that it was hyped it up to be for the past month? And just the mostly fine, solid, but not revolutionary horror movie? Shocking!!!
TheJok3r
TheJok3r - 10/21/2026, 4:52 PM
You all realize that Josh liking or not liking the movie will have no impact on your ability to enjoy it, right ? It seems like everyone is taking his opinion a little too personally.
Kahron0
Kahron0 - 10/21/2026, 5:02 PM
@TheJok3r - Nobody is arguing that Josh isn’t entitled to like or dislike a movie. The issue is his increasingly excessive, hit-piece-like coverage of the DCU, where negative developments reinforce his existing narrative, positive ones come with a catch, and individual project criticisms repeatedly become arguments for why Gunn/Safran is incapable of running a studio.

Josh has the subtlety of explosive diarrhea when it comes to disguising his bias, yet he’ll stir up fan wars through his articles, make Marvel/DC comparisons, and argue with people in the comments before turning around and acting like he’s merely an innocent journalist caught in the crossfire because he liked Superman and Creature commandos . That’s the “throwing stones and hiding your hands part”. He contributes to the very toxicity and drama he’s now claiming to want nothing to do with.

There’s nothing wrong with criticizing the DCU, and other editors on this site have done so without receiving nearly the same level of pushback. So maybe ask yourself why Josh’s coverage generates this particular reaction instead of dismissing everyone who calls it out as overly sensitive fans. Some of us came here for comic-book news, leaks, and rumors, not an endless cycle of doomposting and franchise wars.
Robin1994
Robin1994 - 10/21/2026, 5:20 PM
@Kahron0 - Couldn’t have said it any better. Heavy on the throwing stones and “hiding your hands.” He acts clueless any time you call him out on it. Just pure cowardice if you ask me

Even now with 7 out of 10 critics liking this movie, he made a concerted effort for over half of the reviews he included here to be negative and the positive ones he did to be ambivalent. I wonder how long it took him to handpick those out. He literally made an entire article comparing Clayface’s look to “poop. And on top of that it’s referencing a grainy image from social media trolls of Clayface, mid-transformation. This isn’t journalism. This is garbage.

I wouldn’t even expect a middle schooler to write some sophomoric slop like that for their English class let alone someone who actually considers himself a journalist.
