THE BATMAN Director Explains Why There Were Never Plans For A JOKER Crossover Despite Tonal Similarities

The Batman and Joker could quite easily take place in the same world, as the two movies undeniably share a lot in common. Despite the Clown Prince of Crime's origin story featuring an R-Rating, they're tonally very similar, and the fact that Thomas Wayne is running for mayor in both means it probably wouldn't be that hard to make it so that they're both set in the Batverse.

Talking to Games Radar, The Batman director Matt Reeves made it clear there are no plans for Robert Pattinson's Dark Knight and Joaquin Phoenix's Harlequin of Hate to cross paths.

"I was finishing the Planet of the Apes movies when I first came on board, which is 2017. It's been five years in the making. When I was working on the script and got deep into the script, Joker hadn't come out yet," the filmmaker explained. "I didn't know what Joker was or what it was going to be, and then I became aware of it once we were very deep into the film, and the fact that they were grounding things in a way that was reminiscent of things that we were doing - that wasn't planned. There was never really any discussion of crossover."

"But it was interesting to see that we were trying to ground our stories and that audiences were excited about the fact that you could take Gotham and make it feel so much like our world," Reeves continued. "That was something from the beginning that I had wanted to do."

Ultimately, any similarities between The Batman and Joker appear to be coincidental, but with a few years between their respective theatrical releases, we can't imagine any casual moviegoers getting confused! As for the Clown Prince of Crime, only time will tell whether Reeves has plans to put his own spin on the character (and how much that will differ from Phoenix's take on the iconic villain).

As for the Joker franchise, there continue to be rumblings about a sequel being in the works.

The Batman is now playing in theaters.

I’m just going to assume that WB/DC is funneling the whole “multiverse” logic/explanation through Ezra’s Flash at this point. He is what brings all these disconnected DC projects together.

Huh? Audiences were excited that they could make Gotham so grounded? Like that’s exactly what The Dark Knight trilogy already did a decade and a half ago. It’s not exactly a novel approach. Like it wouldn’t be hard to imagine Bale Batman and Pattinson Batman running into each other.

@TheUnworthyThor - have u seen The Batman? Cause it has a more grounded and realistic approach (which i personally prefer) than Nolans trilogy. The movie has a very different feel

@RokoVII - yeah. Just looking at the movie through trailers and it's very clear they're going for something very different than the dark knight.

@RokoVII - Yeah, I saw it Wednesday. That’s just the difference between how two artists see the world and how they make films. But you can go read and watch all of what Nolan said about making those movies. It was all about being grounded, all about how a Batman would really need to be to be in the real world, a real world without comic books. In fact of the three I would say Joker exists in the most unrealistic world. But they all have unrealistic elements and plenty of them.

would be cool to see Phoenix and Pattinson play off each other

@dracula - It would have been a huge surprise to hear the voice of Phoenix's Joker talking to Dano's Riddler. For so many years, the Joker patiently waited for a chance to escape. As the years passed, people forgot the old clown who made them crazy.

Definitely glad it isn’t. I really, really did not like Joker, and especially its forced inclusion and handling of the Waynes.

The Joker is coming in The Batman 3, Jack was 20 years older than Keaton in Batman 1989...just put enough make-up on Phoenix, and it will work.
Not the same Joker, but the Joker.
Both universes already have a similar take on Thomas Wayne.
Joaquin already stated he is opened to coming back, just do it.

@TheHumanSpider2 - Except that it makes zero sense and well…..I don’t want to spoil The Batman.

@DTor91 - Havent seen the movie yet, but I'm not saying Joaquin should play the same Joker, I'm saying he should play a Joker.
