Matt Reeves' The Batman is coming to theaters next year, but we found out last summer that a TV spinoff set in the same universe is also in the works for the HBO Max streaming service.
Boardwalk Empire writer Terence Winter was originally set to head-up the series alongside Reeves, but it was recently announced that he'd parted ways with the project due to creative differences. Now, Deadline reports that Joe Barton is set to take over as showrunner.
Barton is known for creating Netflix crime drama Giri/Haji. He also worked on AMC and Channel 4 sci-fi drama Humans, Netflix's Troy: Fall of a City, Sky thriller Extinction, and more.
Reeves has confirmed that the prequel series will take place during "Year One" of the Dark Knight's reign as Gotham's vigilante protector, as a “masked vigilante…starts to unsettle the city”. The series will zero in on the corruption that “goes back many years,” and will be told from the POV of an unnamed crooked cop.
The show doesn't have an official title, but insiders have been referring to it as "Gotham Central," which is the name of a 2002 police procedural comic from writers Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka.
It's not known if Robert Pattinson will actually show up as The Caped Crusader, but Jeffrey Wright is expected to reprise the role of Commissioner James Gordon.
