THE BATMAN Stills Reveal A Closer Look At The Riddler's Costume And Colin Farrell's Penguin Transformation

Matt Reeves' The Batman appears to be every bit the reinvention of the Caped Crusader as Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins, and these new images reveal how The Riddler and The Penguin are being reimagined.

Batman Begins grounded the Dark Knight in reality, and it appears The Batman will do the same. We saw Warner Bros. embrace a comic accurate Batman with Zack Snyder's movies, but the hero facing off with Superman and battling Parademons alongside the Justice League drew a surprisingly mixed response from fans.

Reeves plans to focus on the "World's Greatest Detective" side of the iconic DC Comics character, and some newly released images offer a better idea of how his villains are going to be affected by this latest big screen take on Batman.

The Riddler might not have a bowler hat or cane, but he definitely looks every bit the twisted serial killer. A question mark has been incorporated into his costume, and as drastic a change as this might be from what we've seen in the source material, it's one that arguably feels right for the villain in 2022.

As for The Penguin, Colin Farrell has insisted that he's simply "Oz" when we meet him in The Batman, but we're getting some undeniable classic comic book villain vibes off him here. When he does become "The Penguin," it's fair to say the actor has the perfect look to bring the character to life on screen.

There's not long to go now until the movie is released, and we're expecting to see much more from this one over the coming weeks. Hopefully, Warner Bros. releases similar shots of other characters.

The Batman is set to be released in theaters on March 4.

It's pretty cool and frightening that the most hyped cbm will air first.

Nothing will beat the Bat!

Doctor Strange will be great too tho.

The only thing I'm not looking forward to is Aquaman.

@marvel72 - You mean No Way Home?

I mean it was great, but for me personally, it was too big (and the nostalgia felt forced with all Spider-Vets scenes).

I'm not saying it was bad, not at all, I just enjoy smaller and more personal movies. The word 'grounded' just fits perfectly, although I know people on this site don't like this word :)

@UXASIS - I don’t know I mean the lead actor is expressing concern for his role in his own sequel. And yes there are always reshoots especially for MCU films, but it sounds like for this film they may have actually been extensive. And the whole film seems to be predicated on Doctor Strange being an imbecile and doing the most stupid spell in the history of stupid spells for Spider-Man. Only hope I have really is the fact that Waldron got to rewrite and Raimi is directing.

@marvel72 - I don't think The Batman will reach as big of an audience as No Way Home. The Batman looks to be targeted at more mature audiences whereas No Way Home is a movie that parents can take their kids to. That's not to say that The Batman won't make bucket loads of cash, but I don't seeing it making more than No Way Home's $1.5 billion and counting.

@bcom - I mean yeah, of course it won't beat NWH which is an MCU movie and it has the most famous superhero (+ two Spider-vets) in the whole world.

Batman is also famous, but I just don't see it making so much as literally every MCU movie does.

To talk about mature audiences, Joker was R-rated and it made a helluva money, same can be said about Deadpool, but I get your argument.

Penguin looks great. With Riddler though... I wish they tried making his green suit work here but I think that I can live with this costume for now. I’m still very unsure about that leather mask though...

I really really hope this pushes DC in the direction the franchise needs. This movie just looks special, this really could kickoff the rebranding of the DCEU. I would be utterly shocked if this movie was anything short of at least great (8 out of 10) And I've Never been a DC fan whatsoever but honestly now that Spiderman is here this movie is #1 on my most anticipated CBMs to come. (Would be #2 if we had an X-Men movie on the way)

@Lilvic92 - I hope we see villains that the DCEU has wasted. Black Mask, for example.

I think of a scary version of Black Mask. When the skeletal remains of Richard Sionis appear years after his disappearance, Black Mask begins to attack. He covers his face with the death mask of Richard Sionis.

MG0019
MG0019 - 1/9/2022, 12:58 PM
@Itwasme - Funny enough, I’m in the opposite camp, I don’t think it looks special. To me it looks like a rehash of the Nolan take on Batman. Which even back then I didn’t overly like. I still thing Begins was the best of the Nolan trilogy.

I suppose I’m just not a fan of hyper realistic Batman. It breaks the illusion for me. Seeing Bale or Pattinson next to the officers, he looks like those delusional “real life superheroes” that pop up in the news. Not that Batman needs to be campy; look at the animated movies to see dark fantastical takes on villains & costumes.

I also think I have Batman fatigue. This is the fourth or fifth Batman reboot I’ve sat through. Hard to feel like this Batman will be special when it’ll probably not matter soon.

My hopes lie in Matt Reeves. Love his work, and I hope he makes a great film that people enjoy. Even if I’m not one of them.

@MG0019 - All good points. I'm like you, which is actually why I asked the question. I'm hoping someone might cause me to look at it differently. It takes more than good cinematography and punches for me to get on board, but people are really excited, so I want to see what they see.

I tend to just get excited over the next film, whatever it is. So I'll be excited for this, but I found the last trailer a bit concerning because of the representation of Catwoman. It's only a trailer, but the way they wrote her in the scenes they showed were really poor and one-dimensional.

I'm genuinely curious what other people are seeing though.

@MG0019 - what’s your take on Afflecks Batman
McMurdo
McMurdo - 1/9/2022, 3:58 PM
@MG0019 - Nolan never gave me the REAL Batman vibes. No Worlds Greatest Detective, Dark Gothic Horror, trauma psychology atmosphere. This film stands out HEAVY within the genre altogether if you ask me. But I don’t have Batman fatigue mostly because I haven’t felt he’s ever been done right yet.
McMurdo
McMurdo - 1/9/2022, 3:59 PM
@Itwasme - I had the exact opposite reaction. The Catwoman scenes gave made me maybe even more excited for her than Bruce. Which is crazy I know. But she actually feels like [frick]ing Catwoman and it looks like she has a GIGANTIC role.

@MG0019 - I’m kind of like you.
I’m not too excited about a “Grounded” take again.
Feels like Nolan 2.0 and don’t get me wrong I really enjoyed those movies but I felt he covered that era well enough.
I want more of the big ass, larger than life Batman fighting out of this world threats along with his JL buddies.
Sigh.
Maybe someday he will again.

I guess for me, I'm just hoping this universe takes The MCU approach in just treating the costumes and Gotham aesthetic as honorable instead of needing to transform and translate everything. BTAS felt like this awesome balance between realism and fantasy. I don't need them to be just like Marvel, but there does seem to be this weird dedication to overt realism and grittiness that I feel ignores what's kinda fantastic about Batman and his world.
