The Penguin Showrunner Will Produce DC's Poison Ivy TV Series — What World Will It Be Set In?

After taking charge of The Penguin, a story set in Matt Reeves' Batverse, Lauren LeFranc is eyeing a DC return with a Poison Ivy TV series, and we know which world it will be set in.

Moments before the Clayface review embargo lifted, Deadline has brought word that The Penguin showrunner and executive producer Lauren LeFranc is in talks to board the Poison Ivy TV series that's in the works at DC Studios.

This isn't the first time we've heard about the project, but it was put to one side while the Paramount Pictures/Warner Bros. Discovery merger took place. Interestingly, LeFranc is only being eyed to join Poison Ivy as a producer. She won't write the show or serve as showrunner, so this may be little more than DC Studios ensuring it can put "From The Producer Of The Penguin" in the trailer.

No writers have come on board yet, and if the series—which would head to HBO—moves forward, it will be set in the DCU, not the same world as Matt Reeves' The Batman movies. Given the heightened nature of a character like Poison Ivy, that arguably makes more sense.

It's still very early days for the show, and no one has been cast as Pamela Isley. The character first appeared in Batman #181 in June 1966. Created by writer Robert Kanigher and artist Sheldon Moldoff, she was introduced as a botanical-themed femme fatale and became a recurring foe for Batman.

Typically portrayed as a brilliant botanist, Ivy possesses the ability to manipulate plant life and produce powerful toxins. Her motivations often revolve around protecting the natural world from humanity, making her an eco-terrorist whose actions put her at odds with Batman. However, subsequent stories have explored her more sympathetic side, particularly her relationship with Harley Quinn, which developed into a romance.

Ivy made her live-action movie debut in 1997’s Batman & Robin, played by Uma Thurman opposite George Clooney's Caped Crusader. She has also appeared in numerous animated projects, including Batman: The Animated Series, where Diane Pershing voiced the character, and the adult animated series Harley Quinn, featuring Lake Bell.

As with Clayface, many fans will likely wonder why a Poison Ivy TV series is moving forward while The Brave and the Bold remains in limbo. The DCU still doesn't have a Batman, though this news may or may not be a sign that that's about to change.

For now, we'll have to wait and see whether Poison Ivy takes root at HBO. With LeFranc potentially involved and no writer or star attached, there's still plenty of work to do before Pamela Isley makes her DCU debut.

I don't expect it to be comic accurate, but I do expect it to be very good. Like Penguin.

@InfinitePunches - It was rumored a few months ago this would be connected to the Reeves world now it's being said it's not. That isn't a good sign for the Reeeves world imo.

@jst5 - I hope they do Ivy in Reeves world but the way DCU has been worst case scenario is more likely...

@InfinitePunches - That's why LeFranc should write ✍️ it not just produce it. Penguin was out of this world, we need more stuff like it...

@SupermanFamFan - Looks like the updated info is saying it won't in the DCU or Reeves world. That's a big change from what was being said early this year that it was going to take place in the Reeves world. That can't be a good sign imo.

Better not be set in Gunn's DCU

@DoomGame - I agree 💯 should be in Reeves so we can connect this to Penguin which should be very easy especially if LeFranc WRITES it not just produces it...

Are these some kind of WB mandates? They would be 3 Batman villain series. Right now we’ve had 2 Batman villain medias with one Batman movie. If the logic ever was multiple Batmen at the same time would confuse audiences, wth does this do.

@MyCoolYoung - given this seems like it might be set in the DCU , I don’t think it would be that confusing but I also haven’t subscribed to the logic that multiple Batmen on screen would be that either.

This studio is turning into Sony but worse! Gunn’s DC is cheap. She’s gonna have one big reveal on the budget. Pretty sure it’s gonna be watered down and still no Batman. [frick]ck Gunn!

Not gonna lie as a fan of Ivy from Wilson's run and even the campy HQ animated show, an Ivy show should be written by LeFranc. If it has the energy and vibes of Penguin it will be the next best thing we could get out of DC, especially that they have been putting out poop after poop...

But do I trust DC to treat this idea right? If Gunn stays after his contract ends no... If Skydance axes him and tries to improve just maybe...

Who wants to take bets that the usual shit posters will complement The Penguin showrunner and not James Gunn lmao the crash outs over Lanterns, now Clayface, and soon to be Man of Tomorrow are so [frick]ing tasty

Cool…

While Lauren LeFranc wouldn’t be the writer or showrunner , a producer can still have some input into a project creatively rather then just bringing on others so that might be the case here too but we’ll see.

I have never really been a fan of Poison Ivy as a character but I still would be willing to give this show a shot if or when it happens!!.
