BATMAN RETURNS Star Danny DeVito Gives His Take On Colin Farrell's Interpretation Of The Penguin

Danny DeVito brought a grotesque incarnation of The Penguin to life in Tim Burton's Batman Returns, and the actor has now shared his thoughts on Colin Farrell's more grounded version in The Batman.

Batman Returns star Danny DeVito is a fan of Colin Farrell's very different take on The Penguin, but it sounds like he still prefers Tim Burton's more fantastical take on Gotham City and its denizens overall.

While chatting to The Wrap, DeVito was asked if he'd seen Matt Reeves' The Batman, and what he thought about his Dumbo costar Colin Farrell's more grounded interpretation of the classic DC Comics villain.

"Yes I did. I thought Colin did a great job," said DeVito. "Certainly a different milieu. I think it was a more edgy, serious, gangster-y Batman. Of course there's three Italians who are bad guys in it, the Falcones (laughs). But I feel like in terms of performances, I thought Colin - who is a good buddy of mine - I think he did a great job in that. You take your hat off to anybody who sits in the makeup chair that long. I did it with The Penguin and loved it."

While the It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia star enjoyed Farrell's work in The Batman, his loyalties lie with Burton! "My feeling of comparing the two movies, I'm like a Tim Burton fan," he added. "I like the whimsical, the operatic, the disaffected Pee-wee Herman throws me off a bridge (laughs). That makes me smile. So it's a different situation."

De-Vito, who portrayed grotesque, flipper-handed Oswald Cobbelpot in the 1992 movie, has said he'd be open to reprising the role in the past, and with Michael Keaton returning as Batman in The Flash, it's not outside the realm of possibility. After all, Reeves' film is set in a completely different "BatVerse" to the main DCEU.
