THE BATMAN Director Matt Reeves Wants His Movie To Have "Emotional Stakes" And Compares It To CHINATOWN

The Batman director Matt Reeves has talked about why he signed on to direct the movie as well as what he's bringing to the table, and how a couple of unexpected 1970s releases are serving as inspiration...

The Batman is one of 2021's most highly anticipated movies (assuming it still arrives next year as planned), and with War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves at the helm, we know the DC Comics adaptation is in safe hands.

During a recent interview with The New York Times, the filmmaker was asked whether he's able to put his own spin on such an iconic property, and confirmed that while he does have to live up to certain expectations, he has a very specific vision which Warner Bros. is fully behind.

"Of course these things have to be mined in a way that can make these companies money. You never know whether the people in charge of those I.P.s are going to be open to your vision," he explains. "But if they weren’t, I wouldn’t have done 'Batman.' I was like, look, there have been some great 'Batman' films and I don’t want to just make a 'Batman' film."

"I want to do something that has some emotional stakes," Reeves continues. "My ambition is for it to be incredibly personal using the metaphors of that world. It feels like this really odd throwback to the movies I came up on from the ’70s, like 'Klute' or 'Chinatown.' I’m not saying we’re achieving anything like that. Those are masterpieces. But that’s the ambition."

There's a lot here for film fans to be excited about, and it sounds like this will be more than just another origin story for the Caped Crusader. In fact, it may be the most personal take on Bruce Wayne we've seen to date, and that's definitely something to be intrigued by in this "Year Two" story.

Are you guys excited to see Reeves' take on the Dark Knight?

If it's only got half as much incest as Chinatown, then I'll be satisfied.

Good ideas. Batman Begins sorta went there, probably could be done more detective-y though.

I recently rewatched Let Me In which Reeves directed. Highly recommend it as well as the original Swedish version, Let the Right One In.

Batman is in good hands with Matt Reeves at the helm.

So do we know when the film is set yet? Or maybe it's anachronistic?

Cool. Too bad he has no respect for the artwork of the source material because the suit is shit and majority of the cast looks nothing like their comic book counterparts.

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - legit only Gordon and Oswald will look different. Even then Gordon will just be a mustached black detective instead of a white mustached detective. Penguin is looking to be a much wider departure tho, given its Colin Farrell. But I’d say Gordon is comic accurate and maybe penguin will be too, they will just lol slightly different

@THEDARKKNIGHT1939 - Batman has had how many different takes on all of the characters?? Let alone Batman himself?

Batman Begins was a very personal and emotional journey for Bruce so I cross fingers that the movie is like that regarding the character.

I also think Bruce will make many mistakes as Batman and will get better after each failure.

A significant part of my considerable excitement for this movie stems from Reeves talking about it like this. Part of me feels the need to remind myself that it's mostly just talk so far, but... it's just such sexy Batman talk.

Not expecting much "action" out of this which isn't necessarily bad. A set piece here and there. I think he really convinced WB to make a blockbuster WHO DONE IT/ MURDER MYSTERY with Batman as a souped up gumshoe.

Ohhhh great.
I can just hear some online “writers” firing up their lab tops right now.

“ Why do we need the Batman when we already have Chinatown“
“ Reeves rip off of Polanskis Chinatown fails to deliver for the Batman“
“ While it succeeds in aping the superficial aspects of Polanskis style, ‘Batman’ lacks the intelligence or gravitas of Polanskis best work.”
