THE PENGUIN Is Reportedly Looking To Recast One Of THE BATMAN's Villains For Key Role

The cast of The Penguin is quickly starting to take shape, and a new report suggests Warner Bros. and HBO Max are looking to recast one of The Batman's villains: Salvatore Maroni. Read on for details...

Cameras will begin rolling on The Penguin next year, and The Illuminerdi has now shared more details about the show's cast. While the HBO Max series will primarily focus on Colin Farrell's Oswald Cobblepot, we recently learned that a clash with Cristin Milioti's Sofia Falcone, and her family, is likely to be at the heart of the story.

Oz hopes to rule over Gotham City's underworld in the wake of Carmine Falcone's death, but he may face another challenger in Salvatore Maroni.

It's said that The Batman spin-off is looking to cast an actor in his 60s to play the character, though Maroni obviously appeared in that movie as well. An unnamed extra lent his likeness to the mobster in newspaper clippings; however, he clearly won't be returning as Warner Bros. looks to cast an experienced actor in the role.

Maroni was set up to take a fall by Falcone, so chances are he'll see Carmine's death as a sign that now is a good time to try and rise back up the ranks and regain what he lost.

There had been speculation that we might see this character in The Batman 2. Introducing him here could lay the groundwork, but it remains to be seen how important this TV series will be to the eventual sequel from filmmaker Matt Reeves.

The site also mentions that The Penguin is looking to cast a number of newly created supporting characters, including "Eve," a sex worker in her 50s who doesn't take any prisoners, "Nick," an employee at one of The Penguin's factories, and "Dr. Reuben Desotto," an unethical doctor.

Interestingly, they go on to speculate that Desotto could be Dr. Hugo Strange. If this series further explores Arkham Asylum - Sofia has spent years there thanks to Oz - then it's certainly feasible, though it's just a theory at this stage.

The Penguin is expected to premiere on HBO Max in 2024.
