DC Studios appears to be in an experimentation phase, as the tone and variety of the projects that have been released and are set to come down the pipeline are incredibly mixed.
From the pure chaos of Creature Commandos to the classic superhero heroism of Superman and the full-on horror vibe of Clayface, one thing is becoming obvious; James Gunn’s DCU isn't going to run the same play from their playbook, even if they find commercial success. It’s clear Gunn and Peter Safran's cinematic universe won't be defined by just one style.
One previously teased project that definitely checks all the boxes of what Gunn and Safran are trying to accomplish is Zach Cregger's Henchman movie.
Zach Cregger’s DC-set spec script Henchman first emerged in early August 2025 at the exact same time Weapons was released, and Cregger was beginning to build a ton of buzz in Hollywood.
The script reportedly follows a clumsy low-level criminal in the Gotham City underworld who accidentally incapacitates Batman through a total stroke of luck, causing him to suddenly gain massive notoriety and infamy among Gotham's street-level crime syndicates.
If that plot sounds familiar, it’s because you're probably of a certain age where you fondly remember the Batman: The Animated Series episode "The Man Who Killed Batman," one of the absolute best episodes of the classic after-school cartoon.
In that episode, a low-level nobody named Sid the Squid accidentally "offs" the Dark Knight. Instead of collecting a reward and basking in glory, Sid quickly learns that taking down the Bat just puts a massive bullseye on his back, leaving many of Batman's top rogues itching to take him down out of pure jealousy.
While out promoting the upcoming release of his Resident Evil video game movie, Cregger shared where Henchman currently stands with Gunn and DC Studios.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Cregger stated that there's been no movement on the script, commenting, "No, none. Believe me, I love Henchman. My love of that script persists, but there's been no action."
Despite his penchant for social media posts, James Gunn has yet to publicly comment on Zach Cregger's Gotham/Batman-adjacent spec script.
It also doesn't sound like this is what Cregger is working on next, as he's currently gearing up for his sci-fi/horror collaboration with Steven Spielberg, The Flood.
