Following trade reports that Mary Elizabeth Winstead had signed on to play Huntress in the untitled Birds of Prey movie, the All About Nina star confirmed her involvement with the DC project during an interview with The Wrap.

Winstead says she's looking forward to beginning her bow and arrow training to better portray the ruthless vigilante, but admits that she wasn't much of a comic book fan before landing the role.

“I can’t say that I was a huge comic book reader, but when I met with Cathy Yan, who’s directing the film, and learned kind of the back story of the character, I was really interested,” added the actress. “It’s a really strong, kind of emotional place to start from for a superhero character. I won’t go into too much detail now, but I think it’s interesting and an opportunity to do something cool with this kind of character,”

In a separate interview with Observer, Winstead was asked about the rumor that Batman would not be a part of the story because he's been missing from Gotham City for two years. “Right,” she replied with a smile. “I will not go there, but I appreciate the attempt."

Winstead will be joined by Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary. Birds of Prey is set to fly into theaters on February 7, 2020.

Batman has been missing for two years? Are they trying to pull a Battle for the Cowl as an escape route to soft reboot Bats?

@LordHarryLatts - oh oh and Harley gets intimate with Huntress. Or with Canary. Or BOTH. Because, you know.. team building, personal stakes and all that

@LordHarryLatts -
Rated R in these types of film are usually for violence and/or language.
I'd love if Cathy Yan recruited The Raid fight choreographers for this film.

God, I hate the Huntress. She always brings the story down when she appears.

@rabid - She's great in the DCAU, though.

Amy Acker brings it.

@KWilly - I get that she isn't as avid a reader as maybe Grace Randolph, but considering the fact that she has played comic book characters in the past, she probably has read some.

Hopefully they won't do what they did to Banshee in X-men first class and erase culture and ethnicity, Huntress is the most popular Italian American comic book hero, came from a time when Italian Americans were only portrayed as Mafia, she stood apart from her Mafia family and became a hero, Banshee was really the only Irish hero when the Irish were portrayed as Mobsters or Terrorists, they were looked down on, he was the only X-men they wiped his origin from, ethnicity is important to people, world is more complicated than black and white.
