DCEU Rumors Point To Non-Flashy Costumes In BIRDS OF PREY And More Action In THE BATMAN

Some interesting new rumours about both Birds of Prey and The Batman have been revealed today as it's said that we shouldn't expect "flashy" costumes in the former, while the latter will be action-packed.

Revenge of the Fans has shared some interesting updates on the DC Extended Universe and these are bound to get fans talking. While Aquaman may have featured colourful, comic accurate costumes, it sounds like Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) will be heading in a slightly more grounded direction.

Even though director Cathy Yan has reportedly come up with some very cool costumes for the lead characters in the movie, it's said that the filmmaker has gone for a "far less flashy design concept."

That doesn't mean the likes of Huntress and Black Canary won't be decked out in something resembling the source material, of course, but it sounds like we should expect an aesthetic more along the lines of Suicide Squad. Here hoping Black Mask still has his, well, mask, eh?

As for The Batman, it's said that Matt Reeves' second draft of the screenplay "has amped up the spectacle" and that presumably means we can expect quite a bit more action in what has previously been billed as a movie along the lines of David Fincher's Se7en. Tonally, it's also being compared to Batman: Year One despite not being another origin story for the Caped Crusader.

Oh, and Warner Bros. is said to be aiming for a 2021 release date which makes sense.

If you wanted it grounded, you shouldn've given it that ridiculous name.

@Luminus - I don't get these producers and directors with their obsession for making comic book characters look like regular people fighting crime. The purpose of most of their costumes were to be symbols against crime.

Aquaman's vibrant colors come from the lore that Atlantis is brightly colored. His costume is battle armor and not spandex.

@SonOfAGif - There is a reason Superman created an entire genre of imitators and set people's expectations of "what a superhero looks like" for 80 years, while similarly high-quality characters like John McClane and Neo are just recognizable in their own right.

Whether or not Siegel and Shuster knew exactly what they were doing or not, they hit on a formula that incorporated colorful archaic fantasy of classical myth and medieval romance, futuristic utilitarian simplicity, and the all-important power of corporate branding into a single design. It cannot be overstated how potent that alchemy has been.

And it's definitely a challenge to adapt that to live-action in a modern context. But inventive solutions and faithfulness have always yielded the best results. The Iron Men and Deadpools stand out in the genre, while the FoX-Men just don't.

@Doomsday8888 - Have a feeling its going to be more like a Harley Quinn film, with the Birds Of Prey in it, if its good, then thats great, althought they should change the title to Harley Quinn and The Birds Of Prey

Yes....comic accurate for PG13. But darker, more R-Rated takes allow for more grounded and realistic "costumes". Suicide Squad is a good example of that. I personally think Killer Croc looked fvkin awesome !

@InsaneCipher - Croc was based on his original appearance. A big man with a skin disease that withdraws from society.

@InsaneCipher - its just....I thought they were gonna go for the Cgi "video-gamey" look. When they released the first images I thought that was awesome photo-real effects ....then I heard they went for practical...I was pretty happy how it turned out.

@InsaneCipher - Oh you mean like The Lizard in The Amazing Spider-Man. That turned out ...better than Killer Crocs makeup.

Well really for Black Canary the only essential part of her costume is a leather jacket

@dracula - No way man. Black Canary's fishnets are easily as iconic as the leather jacket. If not more.

And with fishnets come shirts and boots. So really there's not much to work with there. But that's a good thing. It just means her costume can be pretty easy to make grounded and transfer to film.

I'm guessing that means the costumes wouldn't be overtly sexual because Canary and Huntress have really sexy looking classic costumes. I'm hoping the same goes for Harley because as popular as her Squad look is, it is pretty trashy and stupid.

Not sure how I feel about the Batman stuff. I mean more action is actually good. I hope it's actually good action and not stuff like the warehouse scene in BvS. Batman is a badass fighter and master strategist and we haven't truly got what I think is the best version of that yet. But on the other hand I have lost whatever interest I had in the project. I'm hoping Affleck is out too. While his performance was without a doubt the best thing in BvS, I still don't think he's a good fit for the role. Maybe a different director can do to him what Jenkins did to Gadot, but for now I just don't see it.

@DnA - I thought the warehouse scene was the best Batman fight scene ever on film (live action). My only fault with it is that he clearly killed, during the fight which is huge but a problem with the film’s story overall. This is the first time on film that the Batman seemed like a total badass in hand to hand combat. Keaton’s Batman was far too stiff because of the costume, Nolan’s Batman (while I ❤️the series had that unusual fighting style and while an excellent fighter, was in a grounded set of films and could be beaten easier than we expect the Batman to be beaten. The fighting ability from the warehouse scene combined with the Batman’s one rule that he is not willing to break and I’d be very happy.

@DnA - That warehouse scene was awesome in BvS. It did pretty much exactly what you are saying you want.

1. It showed him up in the rafters using that explosive device to take out as many guns in the room as possible.

2. It showed him go down to the floor below and still manage to catch them all by surprise by coming up through the floor, which cool considering they already knew he was there somewhere considering their guns were blowing up in their hands.

Those two things show strategy. And pretty impressive strategy considering they were in a wide open room with no real place to hide except the rafters.

3. They showed him kick serious ass hand to hand without making him seem unstoppable. He got stabbed, had his cape used against him, and almost got shot.

I mean, what more do you want?
