WB Taps Up-And-Coming Director Cathy Yan To Helm BIRDS OF PREY Featuring Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn

It looks like Warner Bros. has found a director for their next Harley Quinn-focused project, which will be based on DC's Birds of Prey comic series. Cathy Yan (Dead Pigs) is the studio's top choice...

Deadline reports that Warner Bros and DC Entertainment have chosen Cathy Yan to be the director of their still untitled "girl gang movie", which is said to be based on Birds of Prey. Though no deal is in place just yet, the trade is confident that Yan will land the gig, making her "the first female Asian director ever tapped to direct a superhero film."

The project will feature the return of Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn, but it remains to be seen if she'll be joined by the likes of Black Canary, Batgirl and Huntress. We do know that "the main characters and most of the creative braintrust are female."

The script was written by Christina Hodson, who we recently found out was also hired to pen the Batgirl movie.

Birds of Prey (or whatever it winds up being called) is expected to commence production by year's end or early 2019. Apparently, Harley Quinn Vs The Joker, Gotham City Sirens and a direct Suicide Squad sequel are all still in the works, but have now been put on the backburner.

@NinnesMBC - I think they might have changed it a couple weeks ago.

@JacuzziJoe - Could be but without making an announcement? Odd.

@NinnesMBC - I mean, I thought it was reported. I'm guessing this is the announcement? Idk. Not trying to be a troll, but the reason they have so many films slated is because they are reactionary. They "start" everything and only push forward what they think will be most popular at that time. Problem is, they have nothing to stand on, and that's why their movies don't have the same heart as the MCU does.

@NinnesMBC - Why is any of this still happening? How much do you want to bet this will be the equivalent of DC Charlies Angels and bomb harder than a Trump Black History Month speech.

Good for the up and coming Miss Yan though. Its an opportunity nevertheless.

So is this instead of, or as well as, the Batgirl movie? Does anyone know? Does WB even know?

Can't say I've heard of this director, but will check out her work.

Damn, this means Gavin O'Conners SS sequel is dead. Was hoping to he his take on the franchise...especially after "The Accountant" was a damn good action movie.

@regularmovieguy - Why would this mean that?

O'Connor is currently busy with Atlantic Wall and City on a Hill. At best, he'd be ready to handle SS2 in late 2018.

This film has a script, a director and only one returning cast member. And Robbie is doing Once Upon a Time in Hollywood this summer, and then she's ready to be Harley again.

This might even allow her to do both film back-to-back.

@Philip

As for SUICIDE SQUAD 2, clearly moving out of 2018 shoot. The move to go with BOP not only had a lot to do with Hodson's script but also the idea of doing with BATGIRL what Marvel did with Black Panther in CIVIL WAR by introducing them into universe before giving them own film...

- Justin Kroll, Twitter

SS2 would shoot in 2019 at the earliest. Anything could happen between then and now. It's not dead but WB chose to opt Birds of Prey before this the SS sequel

@regularmovieguy - SS2 never had a confirmed 2018 shoot. BOP has a finished script, SS2 does not.

SS2 shooting in 2018 was the best-case scenario. Not rushing it makes sense.
