We haven't really been covering the latest Asterix & Obelix movie on CBM up until now, but the comic books and animated/live-action adaptations are still wildly popular in France, Belgium and other parts of the world, so we figured we'd share these new character posters for The Middle Kingdom.

This fifth live-action film, Asterix & Obelix: The Middle Kingdom (French: Astérix et Obélix: l'Empire du Milieu), is directed by Guillaume Canet, who also stars as Asterix, and will reportedly serve as both a soft reboot of the franchise and a sequel to 2012's Asterix and Obelix: God Save Britannia.

The plot sees Asterix and Obelix (Gilles Lellouche) travel to Imperial China for the first time when Princess Fu Yi, the only daughter of the Chinese Emperor Han Xuandi, escapes from a rogue prince, Deng Tsin Qin, and flees to Gaul to ask the eponymous pair for help.

The posters feature every main and supporting character, including Vincent Cassel as Julius Ceasear and Marion Cottilard as Cleopatra. Check them out below along with the most recent trailer.

Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom will be released in French cinemas on February 1, 2023. Release dates for North America have yet to be announced.

They made some really good CG animated movies for this franchise. Why go back to the shitty live-action comedy?

Oh man I loved the Astrix & Obelix comics. I hate the phrase "I grew up with [x]," but a few of these books did cross my desk as a kid, intermingled with Batman and Spider-Man. I wish more of it and Lucky Luke came over to this side of the pond.

@Reeds2Much - Those are the only comics I grew up with. I had neither DC nor Marvel, or any American stuff for that matter.

Gotta love the two of them just beating up Italians.
Mamma Mia!

@Reeds2Much @SpaceAgent - yeah, it was mostly French and Belgium comics as well when I grew up. Wouldn't mind seeing more of them getting adapted

I keep forgetting Marion Cotillard is also French, so kinda surprised me to see her.

Anyway, this looks fun. Bit goofy, but that's exactly how I remember the comics.

Do you have to watch this with subtitles?

If no, I'll try it out.

If yes, forget it. I don't do subtitled stuff at all anymore.

@DocSpock - You'd love the Netflix show 1899, it has 10 different languages.
