Earlier this week, Jim Lee announced that Tim Sale had been hospitalised with severe health issues, and on 16th June 2022, the iconic artist unfortunately passed away. News of his death was first shared on his twitter account. Sale's partner Susan Bailey had initially retweeted Jim Lee's tweet beforehand saying “I'll be reading your replies to him to brighten his day. He’s in good spirits, despite everything.”

Sale was an Eisner Award winning artist known for his collaborations with Jeph Loeb, creating tales such as Batman: The Long Halloween and its sequel Dark Victory, Catwoman: When in Rome, and Superman For All Seasons, the latter of which won Sale his Eisner award for Best Penciller/Inker or Penciller/Inker Team along with Grendel, Black, White and Red #1. Together, they would also create the "Color" series at Mavel with Daredevil: Yellow, Hulk: Gray, Spider-Man: Blue, and Captain America: White. Sale also collaborated with Darwyn Cooke on Superman Confidential in 2007-2008.

Sale's work would be highly influential, not just on other comic artists, but in film. Christopher Nolan has cited the artist as one of his inspirations for The Dark Knight. The Long Halloween itself would also later be adapted as a two part animated feature released in 2021.

Sale was born in Ithaca, New York and grew up in Seattle, Washington before moving back to New York to study at the School of the Visual Arts. He would also attend the comics workshop run by other legendary comic artist John Buscema.

Tim Sale will be greatly missed and fondly remembered as a legendary artist and talented storyteller. His work tested the boundaries of the comic book medium with stark page spreads, dynamic character portrayals, and beautiful colours.

News of Sale's passing has seen an outpouring of condolences from DC, Marvel, writers, artists and filmmakers.

@BritishMonkey - Yeah. What's up with that? The usual cast of characters couldn't be bothered to write up and article or tribute to the guy?
Thank you @BritishMonkey

@BritishMonkey - "5 things you need to know about Wonder Man" is apparently more important than this.

Thank you, sir.

First Neil Adams, then George Perez, and now Tim Sale? This year has been nothing less than cruel... Rest in peace, Sir. Gone too soon.

Que descance en paz, he was such a great artist. I've sadly not read much of his work, but I did adore what I did.

This is devastating. One of my absolute favorite comic book artists of all time.

At least WB/DC honored him by adapting his artwork for The Long Halloween animated movie...oh wait. No respect.

Thanks for writing @BritishMonkey. I commented about him being hospitalized on the Jensen Ackles article hoping it would get picked up.

At any rate, Tim Sale was an absolute legend. The Long Halloween is my all-time favorite Batman story, and a large part of that is due to Sale. His unorthodox, noir and art-deco influenced work fit the tone and mood so amazingly, and went against the bombastics of the 90s big time. Spider-Man: Blue is also one of my favorite Spider-Man stories. And again, his art perfectly captures that Romita vibe, and yet had a melancholy feel the whole time. I could go on and on about his work. The art for Heroes. The rest of the Colors series. For All Seasons. And doing it all while color blind too. I’m going to miss him and his work, and the influence and inspiration he’s had as an artist.

@DTor91 - Wait, he was colour blind?

@BritishMonkey - He was! This is from an interview he did with Asher Penn:

You’re color blind, right? How did you discover that?
I always had a suspicion but people kept telling me, “You just need to learn.” They thought I was scared of failing, which was true, but I was failing a lot more than I was succeeding, especially in comparison to my drawing. Then, one year I made my sister a Christmas card with Robin Hood on it. She asked why Robin Hood was green… I thought he was tan. That really opened her eyes, and mine, to the fact that I was actually colorblind.

Here’s the full interview. http://asherpenn.com/mobile/interview/tim-sale/

For those wondering I was actually the first one to write an article about this. Problem is my articles aren't properly formatted much of the time but really I just do it so the word is out in someway and honestly hope someone could come along and make a better article. So if you were someone who saw my post and are upset it was replaced then don't be because I'm not I welcome being replaced by a professional looking one. I'm just glad the word got out and people can come here to mourn a great loss.

EDIT: Went and looked and mine is still there. I guess someone could meld them so anyone who left comments there doesn't get them deleted.

@Steve993 @BritishMonkey - Thank you both. I read both articles but it was weird about the one that you wrote, Steve. I could find it on Google landing page for comic book movie and something on the website but I couldn’t find it on the site itself.
