Avengers #1 Trailer Suggests New Series Could Be A Sequel To Amazing Spider-Man's "One More Day"

Marvel's new Avengers #1 trailer has fans convinced Spider-Man's controversial deal with Mephisto is finally coming back to haunt him, but could Chip Zdarsky redeem "One More Day"?

Next month, Earth's Mightiest Survivors return as writer Chip Zdarsky and artist Marco Checchetto reunite after their Eisner-nominated Daredevil run for a new Avengers series.

Spinning directly out of Avengers: Armageddon, the five-issue limited series by Zdarsky, Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar that launched in June, the new ongoing series thrusts Earth's Mightiest Heroes into a dramatically transformed Marvel Universe.

A radical lineup of heroes—Captain Marvel, Spider-Man, Daredevil, Wolverine, Luke Cage, and the new Miracleman—assembles to protect a broken world that has more reason than ever not to trust them. Once again, the Avengers take centre stage in Marvel Comics storytelling, and a trailer for the comic arrives today.

After watching this, many fans are convinced that Avengers will finally address Spider-Man's deal with Mephisto from the controversial "One More Day" storyline in 2008. During that, Peter Parker and Mary Jane agreed to give up their marriage in exchange for the devil saving Aunt May's life.

History was changed so that they never tied the knot, though we'd later learn that Mephisto had an ulterior motive: Peter and MJ's daughter would one day bring an end to his attempt to make Earth his new domain. So, by ending their marriage, he ensured the child would never be born.

This trailer for the comic suggests the devil will finally collect his due, and the "One More Day" hints are front and centre, with appearances from MJ and Aunt May. While we wouldn't bank on the deal being undone, Zdarsky may be seeking to find a way to build on the controversial story and perhaps even redeem it.

Check out this Avengers #1 trailer below and stay tuned for more on the comic as we have it.

I saw the trailer this past Saturday, it looks promising at least and the art is pretty cool.

I do have my doubts about One More Day being undone because this isn't the first time that someone attempted to do it and in the middle of course correcting that controversial storyline had to be told to stop. Nick Spencer tried it during his run in The Amazing Spider-Man back in 2018 with his Kindred saga but editorial (Nick Lowe) found and put a stop to it right in the middle.

Spencer managed to fix quite some things on the way at least: from retconning the story arc of how Norman Osborn had some affair with Gwen Stacy before her death which gave birth to rapidgly aging twins (which would turn out to be in some way both playing the role of Kindred + an evil AI of Harry Osborn through Mephisto magic) to redeeming Black Cat from her days of the Queenpin era and restoring the close bond Peter and her had once he unmasked in front of her. But that was as far as editorial let Spencer fix things, even though he literally began his run with Peter and Mary Jane getting back together all of a sudden by the end of the 1st issue.

If Spencer couldn't be allowed to do it before editorial found out I am not so sure that Zdarsky could fare better. IMO a subject like this would've ought to be handled within the same pages where it happened, in The Amazing Spider-Man and not with the Avengers. Also what kind of "due" could Mephisto be colleting here since nothing has changed so far? So that part has me confused.

At best Zdarsky might try to build up something here, but he'll have to be cautious about it. Especially since the new guy that is also in charge of Marvel editorial, Stephen Wacker, said this past Saturday at NYCC after being asked about OMD that "a good story is a good story." I think that seals unfortunately again the matter, he is just as in agreement to keep that hellish bargain on regarding Peter and MJ's marriage, and honestly, in general terms of not letting any of them find a new stable relationship with anyone, especially Spider-Man who has had tons of new brief romances afterwards but they all have been unsuccessful in having a lasting impact.

At this point the whole fanbase agrees that it either comes down to restoring the marriage or allowing Peter finally get a proper long-term chance to be with Felicia Hardy this time, even more now since they made up during Spencer's run and have never been as close as this. But editorial is stubborn in sticking to this 20 year-old status-quo of not letting the characters change for the better.

Honestly if it was up to me in coming up with a way to undo what Mephisto did in OMD it'd come down to playing dirtier than him, he always cheats so there is no winning scenario if you play by the rules against him. I like to imagine Peter would recruit Dr. Strange for the magical mumbo jumbo that is needed to match him in power while he asks Black Cat to pull off the best heist yet in stealing in whatever shape or form is what he took from Peter and MJ which would come down to essentially being a piece of the Marvel Universe's history.

Anyway, I'll keep an eye out for this Avenger event because it's also been a while since I read these. Brand New Day did something to me that hadn't happened in a long time with no MCU movie: trying to keep up with the comics.
