Marvel Comics Celebrates The MCU's Phase 2 Movies With New Variant Covers By Some Of Their Best Artists

Next March, Marvel Comics will highlight the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase 2 movies with variant covers from some of the publisher's greatest and most talented artists. Depicting characters and moments from the second era of legendary Marvel Studios movies, these promise to be a must-buy.

Alexander Lozano showcases Tony Stark's epic arsenal of armours as seen in Iron Man 3, Ryan Stegman delivers an electrifying illustration of Thor's battle with Malekith from Thor: The Dark World, Declan Shalvey captures the explosive energy of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Skan revisits the first outing of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Valerio Schiti depicts the epic showdown between the Avengers and Ultron from Avengers: Age of Ultron, and David Nakayama puts his spin on the small-scale showdown between Ant-Man and Yellowjacket from Ant-Man.

This sort of synergy between Marvel Comics and Marvel Studios is always fun to see, and enlisting these artists to put their spin on MCU characters delivers some amazing results.

After all, we're used to seeing the MCU borrow from what they create on the page, so flipping that on its head is a welcome sight. Needless to say, Phase 3 variants are likely to follow later in 2022 and we should eventually get some covers revisiting the current big and small screen Phase 4 stories.

For now, check out these Phase 2 variant covers below:

Thor on that Captain America Ironman variant is looking dope.

Aside from The Dark World, I think Phase 2 might still be my favorite phase. Three and four are amazing, but 2 really solidified and hooked me on CBMs as mainstream movies. Cool to see it get some attention

@bkmeijer

I like Phase III the most, while IV is so far not that entertaining, at least the movies (I only enjoyed Eternals, haven't seen No Way Home).

Phase II is interesting, because it includes the GOAT (Winter Soldier) followed by my least favorite - Guardians.

@UXASIS - Out of curiosity, what didn’t you like about Guardians? I personally love that movie

@UXASIS - Guardians might be my second favorite, as that took me by complete surprise. I kinda wanna know too now why it didn't appeal to you

@MeAreLegend

I just found it to be trying too hard to be funny.

There almost wasn't a scene that didn't have a joke in it, or at least that's how I felt it.

Also the characters were well cast, but I really enjoyed only Star-Lord.

The whole marketing and promotion talk about the team as if they are the bad guys, but they didn't act like that anywhere in the movie.

Gamora is supposed to be the Galaxy's best assassin, but she definitely didn't kill anyone, she wasn't a stone-cold killer, as everyone said.

And Ronan was all power and talk, but no real threat, or charisma.

But it wasn't all bad, I really loved Nebula (I hope she stays in the MCU) and Collector. The soundtrack was also great.

But I'm just not that much into Marvel jokes, unless they really hit the spot. Guardians kinda ruined Infinity War for me, which was a very serious movie, until the coming of Invisible Drax.

I'm not trying to be hateful, I was just disappointed.

Gunn's humor just isn't that funny to me, on the other hand I quite enjoyed The Suicide Squad, where there were perfectly chosen no-name characters, and Gunn really understood the concept of what Suicide Squad is, that is that no character is safe.

Sorry for the long post.

@BillCipher - Yeah, true.

But I kinda see Strange and Stark as more serious characters.

I don't know, I just don't find Guardians as interesting, I was hoping that Russo's would make them serious (because Thanos was kinda their archenemy - at least for Gamora and Drax). Instead the Russo's ''ordered'' Gunn to write their scenes. Which I felt really strong in their scenes.

@BillCipher - Now that I think of that (shooting Gamora in the head), that was really dark, but then came the Invisible Man...

But Thanos throwing Gamora off the cliff, that was really well done.

Don't know about Titan, Gunn writing Tony doesn't fit, but if he did, it wasn't done wrong.

But that joke between Parker and Quill about the greatest movie in the universe, I'd laugh at that all day.

The Winter Soldier is the best movie of phase 2 but that is one terrible cover.

Age Of Ultron is probably the best cover.
