Wolverine, She-Hulk, And Loki Will Be Taken Over By The Venom Symbiote In Marvel Comics' WHAT IF...? VENOM

Wolverine, She-Hulk, And Loki Will Be Taken Over By The Venom Symbiote In Marvel Comics' WHAT IF...? VENOM

Beginning on February 28, writer Jeremy Holt and a host of all-star artists will explore a world where the Venom symbiote took a wildly different path in the pages of Marvel Comics' What If...? Venom.

When Eddie Brock joined with the Venom symbiote, it unleashed his unstable nature and lethal tendencies, but what if the symbiote had bonded with others instead?

Writer Jeremy Holt (Marvel's Voices: Spider-Verse) and artists Jesús Hervás, Tadam Gyadu, Manuel Garcia, and Diogenes Neves answer that pressing question and more in What If...? Venom. Launching next month, the five-issue limited series will put a bold twist on the Venom symbiote’s origin as it's rejected by Peter Parker and tossed around on a thrilling trip through the Marvel Universe.

This amazing unearthly power will be given to the likes of She-Hulk, Wolverine, Doctor Strange, Loki, and Moon Knight, each of whom will be equipped with insane new designs as the symbiote shatters the limit of the rage, darkness, violence, hubris, and mischief within these five iconic characters.

The saga will explore how all these characters grapple with their newfound gifts and reveal who the symbiote will ultimately seek control of. Today, we have four new symbiote designs and a special first look at the first issue showing an unleashed She-Hulk embracing her deadly status quo as Venom's new host.

Could we eventually see something like this in live-action? Well, a piece of the Venom symbiote was left on Earth-616 in Spider-Man: No Way Home!

Here's the solicitation text for that first instalment:

Years ago, in a familiar church tower, the Venom symbiote was spurned by Peter Parker and found a willing host in the vengeful and wrathful Eddie Brock! Or, at least, that’s the story you know! Get an all-new look at what makes the Marvel Universe’s most sinister symbiote tick, starting with a journey that reimagines its earliest days bonded to a host with a rage and temper entirely different from those of Eddie Brock!

"Having the opportunity to play within the Venom sandbox is cool. Having the opportunity to bond five iconic heroes to the alien parasite is cooler," Holt said. "In doing so within the What If...? concept, I’ve had an absolute blast crafting a linear revisionist history that’s provided me the latitude to introduce distinct versions of the anti-hero that we’ve all come to love."

You can check out the design sheets along with a special first look below, and you'll get to see the fractured paths of what could have been for the Lethal Protector when What If...? Venom hit stands in February.

You're not wrong it's why I stopped reading modern comics. Plenty to read from the 60s-80s that are vastly superior.

@bobevanz - yeap. I'm pretty sure those characters were hosts for symbiotes before, from the other dumb storylines I heard in the past, doesn'teven need a what if for that. Their creativity died a loooong time ago.

@marvel72 - Agreed. Marvel from 1965 to 1995 is all you'd ever need - get in when the OGs were in charge and bail out when the foil covers ruined everything.

Anything else is just a copy of a copy.

The fascination with Venom is perplexing... he's a big, drooling Rorschach test with teeth. I think Marvel likes him because he's easy to draw. Yes, I'm sure there are good stories with him but he's mostly just an ink spot with a tongue. (sorry, I'm in a mood).

Venom is great, but the comics have long since WAYYYY overused him.

@DocSpock - The Spider-Man game where the city and heroes were infected with symbiotes was tight....but that was the end for me. Anything symbiote related since has been shark jumping

@DocSpock - that’s how marvel does things first it was wolverine being overuse in every comic series venom Deadpool could be back venom again or Deadpool who knows

Completely true. The entire genre of comics, movies, & games have become buried in Venom/symbiotes, Wolverine, & Spidey variants.

Next we drown in Spidey variants.

I actually really like this concept. It's kinda the same as with giving the Spirit of Vengeance to different characters. Pretty dope, but only cool enough for a one-shot really

@grif - was just about to say the same thing, it's a fictional universe you can do whatever you want in the main continuity! Hated What If? ever since 1977.

There was a great What If? back in the day where Spider-Man couldn't get rid of the symbiote. When all the other heroes finally got it off him, he was aged to a 90 year old man. The symbiote then possessed a bunch of other heroes like Thor and the Hulk before finally being killed by Black Bolt. It was a good story.

There was a What If …? back in the day where the Venom symbiote took over The Punisher. The art was awful and the story was stupid.
Monkeyballs2
Monkeyballs2 - 1/14/2024, 8:05 PM
I forget who did the art. But you can look for it. The cover was hilariously bad. Venom holding two guns pointed in weird directions and his hands not even gripping the guns… but they're shooting somehow. And Daredevil and Spider-Man are hanging out under his ass looking constipated. There are no feet on the cover so I can only assume it was a Robe Liefeld piece or one of the bajillion shitty artists that worshipped him in the '90s.
