Marvel Comics Introducing A New VALKYRIE Seemingly Based On Tessa Thompson's THOR: RAGNAROK Hero

In the upcoming King in Black: Return of the Valkyries, the Marvel Comics Universe is getting a new Valkyrie who most definitely appears to be based on Thor: Love and Thunder star Tessa Thompson...

Last week, Marvel Comics announced King in Black: Return of the Valkyries, a new series from writers Jason Aaron and Torunn Grønbekk with art by Nina Vakyeva.

The comic will see Jane Foster reuniting the Valkyries to defend Midgard from Knull. The former Mighty Thor will be joined by former Valkyrie Dani Moonstar, Asgardian warrior Hildegarde, and a new Valkyrie designed by artist Mattia De Iulis.

You can take a look at this mysterious new character in all her glory on Phil Noto's gorgeous variant cover for the debut issue. Does she look familiar? Well, it's hard to deny that there are some similarities to Thor: Love and Thunder star Tessa Thompson, and it seems that's where Marvel took inspiration from.

"When [editor] Wil Moss asked me to create a new design for a Valkyrie, I didn't believe him!" De Iulis says. "I'm so excited about this because it is my first experience in this field and I'm really honored to work on this amazing and powerful character!"

Emerging just as Knull’s takeover begins, this new Valkyrie’s past holds dark secrets that will change everything you thought you knew about this group of Asgardians and reveal what their future in the Marvel Universe holds. Check out Phil Noto’s cover, Mattia De Iulis’ character designs, and be there when this all-new Marvel hero joins the fight against Knull this January!

this is a bit ridiculous to me. its like they think fanbase cant accept that black actors play characters that are white in the comics (i mean, its true for some 'fans', but id say most are okay with it). didnt they already try this and introduce an 'mcu inspred' valkyrie from another dimension? wasnt she a part of exiles? where did she go?

@rebellion
Into the trash, like with everything that doesn't sell.

@rebellion - so would you have a problem with a white actor playing a black character?

@rebellion - Valkyrie in the MCU is technically an original character in the same vein as Michelle Jones (MJ) in Spider-man. The blonde Valkyrie we know from the comics was killed off in that short flash back. But then apparently Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie's real name according to MCU wiki is Brumhilde like the 616 comic version but they never say it in Ragnarok do they? So I dunno how canon that is.

@TheWalkingCuban - terrifying ain't it?

@rebellion - apparently asking a question is considered being desperate for attention. There's what, five guys on the planet who had a problem with tessa as valkyrie? This vs the massive media attention of scarjo as major or tilda Swinton as the ancient one. There's clear precedent for this double standard to warrant me asking. Unless you're admitting you would have a problem with it...

@TheWalkingCuban - now i just wanna know what marlons doing. I just saw him in a rerun of in living colors.

@Origame - loved him on wayans bro’s, Shawn too, and of course scary movie 1&2. I used to think 2 was bad. Now I thinking’s good simply because 3&4... let’s not talk about those. But my cousin pretty much was Marlon, except he’s a white half Cuban half Honduran but still, crazy as all get out

@TheWalkingCuban - yeah. Its still crazy he was almost robin in the burton batman movies.
TheWalkingCuban
TheWalkingCuban - 10/22/2020, 3:52 PM
@Origame - yeah that wouldn’t work, he’s a good actor but that, dungeons and dragons, gi joe, it’s like they want him to be himself but hold back. Better to be himself, or someone else, like on requiem for a dream.

@TheWalkingCuban - yes definitely.

@Chaos200 - Exactly. A lot of people like to say that Tessa is playing the white character from the comics, but as you stated that white character was actually in the movie and was killed off saving Tessa in the flashback scene. Tessa is a different character altogether.

@Kumkani - that was from another dimension I think. This is Marvel Prime.

lel, i was JUST talking about synergy shit in the other thread.

Oh Marvel...

I mean, these ARE the same f*ckers that sidelined the OG Nick Fury in favor of the MCU version all the while having the Ultimate version that actually inspired the MCU version.

F*ck it, you can't make this up and yet...

I don't have an issue with this, but didn't they already introduce a new Valkyrie that looks like Tessa Thompson in Exiles?

@BrettMan - they did. Never understood why they didn’t just proceed with her. But oh well
