Earlier tonight, Deadpool 3 star Ryan Reynolds shared an announcement teaser, release date, and poster for the Merc With a Mouth's highly-anticipated MCU debut - but what really broke the internet was the massive reveal that Hugh Jackman would be returning as Wolverine.
Jackman famously "retired" as the fan-favorite mutant hero when he laid Wolvie to rest (literally) in James Mangold's Logan. The critically-acclaimed movie was widely viewed as a fitting swansong for the character, so while many fans are looking forward to this team-up, the news of the Academy Award-nominated actor's reprisal wasn't met with unbridled enthusiasm by everyone.
Shortly after the video did the rounds, Mangold took to Twitter to share the following.
Should we take this as a sign that the Indiana Jones 5 director is of the opinion that Jackman's take on Wolverine should stay buried? Well, he did follow up his initial Tweet with this, so it doesn't look like there's any genuine hard feelings!
We have no idea how Logan will factor into the story, but there's plenty of comic book material to draw inspiration from. Reynolds has previously revealed that, prior to Disney's takeover of 20th Century Fox, his original pitch for a third Deadpool film focused on a "Rashomon-style" road trip with Wade and Wolvie, so perhaps elements of that idea carried over?
Whatever happens in Deadpool 3, we can't see Jackman staying on as the MCU's version of Wolverine beyond this one project.
The third Deadpool movie will be directed by Shawn Levy, and is set to hit theaters on September 6, 2024.
